Well, I follow a lot of coaching searches. Almost every good program that has had an opening this year has had fans wanting Howland. Yet, nobody has hired him.
We call that a clue. If you ignore the clues, you usually lose in the end.
Maybe he is just a bad interview. Or maybe there is something more.
A good example of this is Russ Springmann at Texas. The guys is a top quality assistant, interviews for a lot of jobs, but never get them. The guy is a great recruiter (take a look at the Texas list from the past 10 years), and has done well under Barnes. Yet he is never given a second glance.
I asked an Asst. AD who interviewed him once what the problem was. He told me that they loved the bio, but the guy just did not interview well. That happens sometimes. These are usually quick hires (weeks not months) and you have to make quick decision. I heard last year that Springmann was aware of the problem and was getting help with improving his interview skills. Let's see what happens.
With Howland you could look past a bad interview. Great past. But another retread. And again, there is the question. Why did not XXX or YYY not hire him already.
I will keep coming back to this- Do you want a coach that comes to you to build a program? Or do you want a guy who is just looking for a job?
And now you got another good program looking for a coach. While you sit reading rumor of which way a plane traveled.
