Why Was Our Defense So Bad Against SC?

Alright. See the better teams have a d line rotation. The best UT teams had several to rotate. That way, their lineman play way fewer snaps then they do at Tennessee and are fresher, better. Tennessee cannot give their lineman a rest as they have no one else to put in. In other words....DEPTH. So it starts with average players and no depth behind them. On a good team, Tennessee's starting line man would maybe be an other teams's depth.

Strange, every other program's coaches are still teaching technique right up to draft day; and I suspect your is too.

I'm just using the coach's own words in his own self-assessment... “I’ve got to do a better job coaching them up.” .

So if the players ain't "getting it done", then it's his job to figure out why they still aren't... that's what a hc does, solve problems.

Water to wine, Rome built in a Day, Want it Right or do you Want it Right Now....

We Hired a Coach who has been honest with us to share the Reality of our program. Some will accept it, Some will not. He and his staff will make mistakes, admit to them and learn from them.

Most important thing about Coaching is to Identify the Problem and Develop a Plan to Fix it. Not to wave a wand over it and say "done"....Our previous three coaches appeared to have done it and made a lot of excuses in doing so....

Several Fans have bought into it as it appears. In Reality these coaches blew Smoke.

CJP appears to be a blue Collar coach, another Reality Check, and not blowing smoke because what he is saying is not always appealing to hear by the fan Base.

The "Your is Too" statement sounds like an outsider looking into our program without any invested interest in Volunteer Football... with only one exception---stirring Crap.

Actually, my cousin was a UT scholarship athlete, one with a title I might add. But you don't have to be any insider to know what's being coached, at any school... just have to be interested or "invested" enough to watch some of the available practice footage.

Another theory. We just came off a brutal series of games . I'm sure the entire team is wore out mentally and physically.

It wasn't depth...they were completely unprepared for the hurry up offense. There were receivers running free all over the place.

Well that could be depth ...what more would blow out already blown out legs than a hurry up ? How about a power running drive mixed in to gas a thin defense ?

I think you may have answered the question with your stated denial of the answer

The team is woefully thin especially at the D LOS . This problem becomes cumulatively worse as a season wears on. It doesn't help that we are playing from behind or in a neck and neck race. If you can rest your starters 10 to 15 times a game , because your are winning big, or the 3 deep doesn't have a fall off and subs are an option , your save 120 to 150 game reps a season. What happens when guys are beat up bad by the end of a season ...they don't practice them as hard to try to recover them by game time. It is an age old problem for thin teams. So after the DL gets gassed, the LBs then start taking all the contact and they get beat .

I know this. SC knew this. Expect a lot more hurry up and power drives early in games going forward. The other OCs know this.

The only way to get past this is to recruit and develop a 3 deep . It just how football works

I don't understand how depth on defense would be an issue with a hurry up offense since the design of the offense is to not let you substitute in the first place. TN offensively held the ball long enough to rest the defense.

Wow. Ok so the defense had nothing to do with the loss? Ok. So lets say on the last drive, we score a TD to go up by 4. What indivation was there that the defense could stop SC from scoring again?
If that was the case, then in your belief, our offense would have no problem throwing the hail mary. The offense dictates how the defense plays. Who put that defense in that situation in the first place? When the game starts, it's always 0-0. Not 0-7. You get AHEAD first.
