Why Was Our Defense So Bad Against SC?

The reason we lost was no pressure on QB and TKJr. did not play like he is capable of playing. SC passing game was the difference in the game.
They complete 11 balls all night for 150 yards and half of it came on one play. Meanwhile, they ran for 240. Not sure the pass mattered except for the one deep ball.

Once USC sped up their offense right before half, the game was over. They not only found the answer to moving the ball but they seemed to stay with it the entire second half. Still can't believe they cannot find a safety that will not let a receiver get behind them on a deep route.

That's exactly what happened. We're weak and thin up front and the tempo gassed us.

I don't understand why we were never able to figure out how to stop the run or get pressure on the QB. We looked weak and slow guess we are and the Auburn game was just a fluke where they were not ready to play. I thought the defense had turned the corner now they look like they are back to square one. If they had been able to control Auburn just a little bit we probably win. Letting them score so quickly on just a few plays was our downfall.

My thoughts are...the coach schemed up a good defensive game plan to mask our deficiencies but the opposing coach finally figured it out and countered in the 2nd half.

It wasn't depth...they were completely unprepared for the hurry up offense. There were receivers running free all over the place.

This! When SC was in the hurry-up, which was a lot in the second half, our defense looked lost and confused. We couldn't get set (which is the intention of the hurry-up) and we had no idea how to read the offense to put guys in the right spots. This caused us to chase a lot of guys instead of matching step or getting ahead of them. Eventually, it wore the defense out. Having a worn out defense lends to depth issues because there are not enough fresh bodies to plug and play.

This team needs defensive line help bad in recruiting for next year. That’s our biggest weakness right now. We shore up the DL and get a pass rush plus a good to decent offense this team will be fine going forward. Injuries sucked this year and hoping the injured guys stay next year to help out. Recruiting needs to be great this year to ease the fans impatience on losing. Winning needs to start happening again on a regular basis again and they will get there. Give JP a couple great classes of HIS guys and results will start showing. For now we gotta be patient..

DL recruiting should be a big focus these final months in the cycle. We have immediate playing time available. Need to get lucky on a recruit or two who can at least contribute next year.

Simple answer the defense man for man was getting beat. No need to complicate it they ran the ball down our throats. That's not coaching that's players getting pushed off the ball.

It's always coaching; whether it's technique, strength, or conditioning, coaching is instruction. If the HC/DC fails, especially in games between similarly talented opponents, then he hasn't adequately taught them... "coached them up".

Defense is supposed to be Pruitt's forte; if guys are still making all these same mistakes 8 games into the season, maybe it's not the players whose performance should be judged.

On the defense...

“Defensively, got one turnover, gave up explosive plays. You can’t do that. You’ve got to make the other team earn it. It’s a shame that we continue to have some guys play well up front, then we just have guys that literally just turn people loose. It baffles me. I’ve got to do a better job coaching them up.”

NO, replace the guys that are turning people loose!

Which is sad when you look at the time-of-possession stats. We held the ball significantly longer than USCjr. No excuse for a tired defense.

From my limited knowledge looked like out of position players , bad angles and zero D Line push

Because we came off a murderers row finished up w the best bama team in its history. All w a roster w depth issues AND just lost one of its best players ( kongbo for the mouth breathers)in a position of need.

IF you seriously think that Kongbo is one of our best players--then there's no hope for you....that is all

Musings from the fringe. Do you realize there was a day when we had four 5 star players, some award winners from the Army All American HS game, that were supposed to lineup as our DL this season as seniors.
Left to right our starting 4 DLs should have been:

Phillips, Tuttle, Mackenzie, and Taylor.

All four played for us last year as juniors on perhaps the worst Vol defense in history.

3 of the 4 are with us this season.

We all have our theories as to why this didn't work out for them or us, but it's a spectacular fail IMO.

So the next batch of perfectly viable players can duplicate the same mistakes? There's nothing wrong with the players you have now; they're the same ones everyone was pursuing before they chose UT. A coach publicly taking blame is nice and all, but unless or until that coach actually believes he bears some responsibility for development, little will change. Coaches demand accountability from the players, but if coaches don't demand it from themselves, it's little more than press conference coachspeak... the way you know the difference is by the play on the field. The UT D doesn't really look any better than they did 8 weeks ago.

He's an enigma; for the life of me I can't figure out why that guy isn't an unstoppable force... even before his injury he was being labeled a "waste of a scholarship" and worse on the board. He has needed better development, from the last staff and this one as well; and now that development has come to a screeching halt.

Oh and usc was coming off a bye ..

So a worst case scenario that we managed to lead for 80% of the game. But you bitching little girls continue w your uneducated temper tantrum
Shut up dude.

We had a break during that stretch.

We're not a very tough team.
South Carolina's trash offense was unstoppable in the 2nd half, because our defense has bad veteran leadership.

Stop making excuses...

Development is NOT the problem....KONGBO is.....Fulmer used to say that sometimes you get players who "look like Tarzan, but play like Jane."

He's not an enigma--he's the reality. Not every big, tall, strong guy has the ability to play SEC FB....

Pruit's dad was right. Players play how they were coached. Even Pruit said the same during one of his pressers. The undisciplined tendencies of this team reflect on the coaches. It isn't talent, it is the coaching and it must improve. Something is missing.

And of those 4--only Tuttle is truly SEC caliber talent

SC ran an offensive scheme they don’t normally run. We weren’t expecting that run heavy O and we never could adjust.

It's easy to seize on that comment by Pruitt's dad when you were not privy to the rest of that entire conversation....which probably went privately about like this--

CJP: Yessir, Dad. But Dad, you have watched the film and do know that WE SUCK talent-wise--right?
Dad: Yes, son....I do know that you have NOTHING to work with....but son...keep your head up and go win the recruiting battles.

And you're right--something is missing----you're brain!
