Why the pessimism?

Since so many of the posters on VN already know the outcome of most games, I am surprised more of them don't make a $$$$ killing each week in Vegas. :thud:

I take it you don't participate in Freak's Pick the Score contest? Have you ever bet money based on your prediction?

Because their hope for us to lose is high right now.

Yeah, those with pessimism are hoping that we lose to Florida.

Only knucklehead I have seen hoping that we ever lose a game was D4H, who coincidently thinks any and every team we field has more talent than most NFL teams.

for anyone that's bent out of shape about some of the responses in this thread, to the question asked...i would suggest starting another thread, with a better question that will garner the answers you want to see.

and i'll be happy to provide my answers to that question as well.

As for pessimism related to the gators. The last time UT played in the swamp and real late in 4th qtr. all we needed was 1 1st down to run out the clock while still possessing the ball. We couldn't get it done. Even when we did give up the ball UF had a way to go and would need a TD to tie and an extra point to win. On 4th and 9 from the 46 yrd line they complete a pass between 3 defenders and a freshman takes it to the house. Don't forget our coach failed to attempt a 2 pt. conversion on our last score that would have made the game tied or forced UF to go for 2 for the win had we converted. Then we had a last second chance at FG that had plenty of distance but no more than a foot wide.

Now does that answer the OP's question or should I go into 2014 and the 10-9 one point loss to UF in Knoxville? Why the pessimism? Because it's Florida week.

The remedy is to beat hell out of 'em and get some confidence back in this team and get back in the weight room.

im not actually pessimistic about the game, but i understand why some folks are, anyone who has been a Vols fan the past 18 years or less, has every reason to be pessimistic, with that said, I feel good about the game

you callin' me a liar, about my own opinion?:)

Heh, no. But the question (my 'dunno why' question, which you've been responding to ever since) wasn't about your opinion, it was about a whole group of people's opinions (the NegaVols), and I'm not even sure you're part of that group. :)

Wait...do you think of yourself as a NegaVol?

Why is it that every year, there is so much doubt? Let's get real guys:

-Sure, we allowed an ungodly amount of yards on defense against Georgia Tech but who doesn't? Hell, even the "almighty" Jawja does almost every year. Our defense is going to be fine and is going to win us some games.

-Why is everyone afraid of Georgia again? They aren't that good, Kirby won't last. They just beat a highly overrated Notre Dame team and everyone is scared. That's a load of crap, we will roll them in Knoxville.

-Florida scored 3 points on offense against Michigan, we will beat Florida by at least 3 touchdowns. Their defense isn't crap neither, Speight threw those interceptions in terrible coverage, Dormady will adjust and have a career day.

-We will play in Atlanta in December, this team isn't a nightmare as some of you make it out to be.

I guess my pause would be the Florida defense. If everyone thinks we are just going to score on UF like we did Tech and Indiana St, your smoking the wrong cig!

Yeah, thats it. Instead of trying to understand what they are saying or at least attmept to view what they are saying as objective, ill just question their intentions. Much easier that way.

You guys were gearing up with your pitchforks in the middle of the GT game and then we won. It made a lot of negs very mad that we won and you've been angry ever since because CBJ keeps finding ways to win ..... or keep his job (how you see it).

You guys want them gone so bad you're rooting for the coaches to prove you right on an internet chat board so you look smart. Thus you say you are fans but in reality you care about your ecred and agenda more.

Spin how you want but if we lose you will have the best week of your life posting all over VN. If we win then you have to spin everyone's words and keep pushing your agenda.

You can fools others but I know way too many people like you.

And then think our D is somehow gonna morph into an SEC defense. I expect UF to run around our ends all day, especially Kongbo. Best play he has made was when he was 2 yards offsides.

This seems more honest and on the mark than any response yet.

We need to go into Florida and beat them down

That will ease my tensions on Butch and big games

Lets not fool ourselves, Florida is not as good as I even expected them ti be. We should be able to handle them

But we should have in 2014 and 2015 and didn't. Butch got over the hump last year at home and their D is not anywhere what it has been. This is a very winnable game for us in the swamp

I think that's the second-most fascinating open question about this game.

Because sure, there's plenty of room for improvement in our O. But isn't the most improvement made in the first few weeks of the season? And don't we have a new QB, just coming on board, getting settled in? So shouldn't we potentially see him catch fire at some point, as talented as we know he is? And could that be this weekend?

We don't know.

If he gets hot now, if our OLine can protect him well enough and he settles in, I could actually see him doing even better than he did vs Ga Tech and Ind St. That doesn't necessarily mean score as many points, but play a cleaner and more efficient game. With the help of lads like John Kelly and Josh Smith and Marquez Callaway, of course.

It's intriguing, for sure.

[#1 most fascinating question is whether our defense looks significantly better starting this week, whether Shoop held back on purpose in weeks 1 and 2]

Thanks JP.

Got back last night. Everything seems ok, so far.

I'm all in on the trashcan. That guy running around the field after the game is the funniest thing I've seen in a while.

Heh. Okay.

well, i do just try to call it like i see it, and i've *tried* to refrain, lately anyway, from making the emotional reaction type posts....not posting in game threads etc....

but if i see good, i post about it. if i see bad, i post about it...if i see dumb posts bashing the program or butch falsely, i call it out, if i see dumb posts propping up the program or butch falsely, i call it out

at least i like to think i do .:dunno:

in the end, i'm a TN alum and fan. and want this program to win...like us all. this is a message board, and in large part there's not much of a filter. so, and i'm sure you do this and have seen it done, i think i've probably pigeon holed myself with a "group" of posters that i like going back and forth with...some i agree with, some i don't, but for the most part, it's all coming from the same place...so most of the conversations and banter are good.

but, no i'm not a negavol, and i'm not a sunshine pumper. though depending on the thread and the result of a particular game....i can go either way.:p

I hope they get to use it a few times this weekend. And I hope our team doesn't abandon it just because some media types tried to go negative on it. It has the potential to be a really cute and funny meme. With its own twitter account and everything. :)

Why the pessimism?

Believe most of us are trained Pavlovian Vol Fans. Don't think that there is one of us that "Wants" to be pessimistic, but after years of being let down by our program, we tend to guard our expectations. At least that is the view from my world.
