But if he's as toxic as everyone claims then why would Hart want him? He's gotta find a good fit for the university and administration.
Because who knows if he's as toxic as claimed? And let's put this in perspective here, Pearl got a show cause. A freakin' show cause, and Auburn didn't hesitate to hire him. And if Auburn didn't, someone else would have.
Howland never got any kind of show cause, and most of this is based on an article and a lot of talk.
Yeah he had some bad seasons after the Final Fours, but he also won the Pac-12 his last season and made the NCAAT, and probably deserves some credit for this year's S16 team. I think this "he's toxic" is based in some truth that has been highly overblown through people repeating it.
That's it though, for some coaches the risk is if they will win or not. But for him the risk is if he will win (IMO) and also if he is toxic or not.
I don't think Howland and Pearl are completely comparable though. For one, Pearl had the one recruiting violation that got completely out of hand, but he never had any problems with the administration. Howland had recruiting violations and he didn't get along with the administration at UCLA.
Also for Auburn a risky hire for them means at worst they are the same they always are. For us a risky hire means at worst we plunge from the upper echelon of the SEC down to the middle or even the bottom of the league. So Auburn was definitely in a position to make a more risky hire than we are.
Yes I believe a guy that's been to 3 Final Fours and taken 3 different programs to the NCAAT (and won the Pac-12 his final year) suddenly sucks.
I honestly can't remember, but weren't you one of the one's that said Tubby would be a bad hire?
His highs are higher and his lows are lower.
Howland has the appearance of a good hire on paper. But he didn't get fired from UCLA for overachieving his last 4 years, and with good rosters to boot.

Does Tennessee want Ben Howland, or do they have something against great basketball coaches?
@JimmyWoodCU Built championship programs at NAU, Pitt, UCLA. Who hired this spring can match his resume?

And hopefully I don't sound like a guy trying to just spoil everyone's hope of Howland, but I like to believe the people paid millions to make these decisions are the best at it. And Hart has given me no reason yet to believe he won't make the right hire.
