Why Tennessee will not hire Ben Howland

But the thing is, you may not have to pay Howland much more than the mid-major. If he's as toxic as everyone claims, it's not like he can demand a lot.

But if he's as toxic as everyone claims then why would Hart want him? He's gotta find a good fit for the university and administration.

And hopefully I don't sound like a guy trying to just spoil everyone's hope of Howland, but I like to believe the people paid millions to make these decisions are the best at it. And Hart has given me no reason yet to believe he won't make the right hire.

Because who knows if he's as toxic as claimed? And let's put this in perspective here, Pearl got a show cause. A freakin' show cause, and Auburn didn't hesitate to hire him. And if Auburn didn't, someone else would have.

Howland never got any kind of show cause, and most of this is based on an article and a lot of talk.

Yeah he had some bad seasons after the Final Fours, but he also won the Pac-12 his last season and made the NCAAT, and probably deserves some credit for this year's S16 team. I think this "he's toxic" is based in some truth that has been highly overblown through people repeating it.

That's it though, for some coaches the risk is if they will win or not. But for him the risk is if he will win (IMO) and also if he is toxic or not.

I don't think Howland and Pearl are completely comparable though. For one, Pearl had the one recruiting violation that got completely out of hand, but he never had any problems with the administration. Howland had recruiting violations and he didn't get along with the administration at UCLA.

Also for Auburn a risky hire for them means at worst they are the same they always are. For us a risky hire means at worst we plunge from the upper echelon of the SEC down to the middle or even the bottom of the league. So Auburn was definitely in a position to make a more risky hire than we are.

I think Howland and Pearl are more comparable than you think; both have been blacklisted and considered toxic, only Pearl's was more on the coaches' side and Howland's is more on the admin side. Also I would argue Pearl had some issues with the UT admin considering they won't even consider hiring him back.

I'll agree Auburn has less to lose, but we're getting close to desperate area in this coach search, so while I get Holwand wasn't (and maybe shouldn't) have been a top choice, he really needs to be considered now. His resume and success, IMHO, trumps all the other crap, and he's a known name that I think the typical UT fan would be happy for.

Yes I believe a guy that's been to 3 Final Fours and taken 3 different programs to the NCAAT (and won the Pac-12 his final year) suddenly sucks.

I honestly can't remember, but weren't you one of the one's that said Tubby would be a bad hire?

His highs are higher and his lows are lower.

Howland has the appearance of a good hire on paper. But he didn't get fired from UCLA for overachieving his last 4 years, and with good rosters to boot.

Yes. And I still say Howland is a better hire than Smith.

Why didn't Auburn hire Howland? He's been available for a year, and Lord knows, auburn has no scruples.

I'm genuinely curious about this. Did Howland's name ever surface in connection with Auburn?

I don't know what you call the Sweet 16.

But y'all still didn't like that guy, even though he was the best pure basketball coach we've had.

The same reason our fans signed a petition: they wanted Pearl.

If I recall correctly Howland got in trouble with the administration because he totally lost control of his basketball team. He had one player that was apparently running the show for Howland and Howland must have been afraid of him because he wouldn't get rid of him or correct him. There were about 11-12 players that quit the team in the four years that the problem player was there. If a head coach can't control his players he should be fired. I don't think I ever remember anything like this happening in college where a coach allowed a player to take over the program and run it in the ground. That in my opinion is why Howland is considered to be toxic.
