Why not Mike Leach?

I hope you are joking. He had Texas Tech in the top 4 at one point, and Washington State is now in the CFP picture. No one does more with less than Leach.[/QUOTE

He is an 8-9 win coach.......PERIOD

.605 FOR HIS CAREER

we already have a coach that can win 8 games

Tennessee needs to find much better

I could care less what his win percentage is. He has been highly successful at two schools who are historically pretty bad. He had to totally rebuild at both jobs, so obviously some of the early years at each stop are going to contribute to a lower overall winning percentage. He has won the Big XII Coach of the Year and the Pac-12 Coach of the Year. He basically has Washington State in the top 10 now...a team that was winning about 3 games a year when he got there. Do you honestly think Butch would have done the same with WSU?

Why put so much faith in a half of one season?

He has shown he can build a program and keep those teams to about 8 or 9 wins a season...............why would you want that?

He was 11-2 in 2008.

LOL........really?

Yea he had one good season in his ENTIRE career. He has also went 7-6, 3-9, 6-7, 3-9.......and so on, but I didn't bring those up........because he has proven he can win 8 to 9 games......and that is about it.

OK give him one good season over 16..........sixteen years.

I'm not trying to make anyone upset, or even say Leach is not a good coach.......but at this point why in the world does Tennessee need another 8 to 9 win coach?

Exactly.

I’m not basing it on half of one season. I’m basing it on his body of work, in which he has turned bad programs around despite not having the facilities, money, recruiting and geographic advantages, etc. of their competitors. So I think if he did have those types of advantages, like he would at Tennessee, he could be very successful here. Like I said earlier, he went 11-2 with Texas Tech in 2008. When was the last time we had a record that strong? Plus I think concerns about his personality and ability to relate to people in the South is overblown....as long as you win, those types of things tend to get much less important.

His only season with double digit wins in 17 years of coaching. Thats mediocre.

Again, he has coached at Texas Tech and Washington State. That is the difference to me. What would you expect Urban Meyer or someone like that to do at those schools? Go 15-0 with a national championship every year?

Butch Jones has done that too, and we ALL want him gone.

Butch turned a bad Tennessee program into won that can win 8 or 9 games........he is also a bad coach, and cannot develop. But regardless, Tennessee does not need a coach that can build.....or one who can get us to 8 or 9 wins. Butch Jones once went 11-2 at Central Mich.........but he has never backed up that success.............neither has Leach.

We are going to just have to agree to disagree on this. I am not saying Leach is the next Saban or anything like that...just that I think he would have a good chance to be quite successful here.

You could literally give Butch Jones 100 years to Coach at TTU or WSU and he would never win 11 games.

Irrelevant. We arent talking about Butch Jones. Also, you are making unprovable statements but whatever. The fact is in the past 15 years, Leach averages about 8 wins. Thats mediocre.

It’s not mediocre at WSU and TTU is what I’m saying. Butch has been somewhat successful at rebuilding programs because he can recruit. Leach has been more successful because he can coach. If he came to Tennessee, we would have a coach that can actually coach, and the program recruits itself to a large degree. He may not recruit as well as Butch but I think you’d see much better results on the field. This is just my opinion, and maybe I’m wrong and you’re correct. No coach, except for Saban really, is a sure thing as far as success is concerned, so there is always some degree of risk. But like I said earlier, I’m just going to agree to disagree with you guys on Leach.

He would not get along with this fan base for very long IMO.

I think he would as long as he was meeting or exceeding expectations. I don’t think we would try to hire him though, and I’m not disputing the fact that he’s a little strange.

I get it but he's not my coach and I already want to punch him in the mouth every time I see him on TV.

If things went bad, I could definitely see it going downhill real fast. I don’t think Leach is known for his ability to do damage control with the press and fans. I still find him an intriguing hire though, especially compared to just hiring some mid-major coach.

Knoxville is a lot closer to Key West than Pullman. Made that drive once for spring break. Never again. The Pirate would be good here, but would he win championships?
