Why no pink for UT?

There has been some discussion that the NFL is "pink washing" and that the proceeds from their pink gear sales stays almost entirely with the NFL. I am curious what the role is for the NCAA in terms of support/donations.

I posted this on another thread about this same topic a few weeks ago (imagine that, Volnation rehashes the same topics ad naseum) but here is something to consider:

Roughly the same number of people die of breast cancer each year as commit suicide (about 40k in the U.S.). I admit that increased emphasis on early detection and treatment is partially responsible for this low number, but what this means is that roughly .00012% of the population dies from this disease every year.

Pink is a marketing ploy to raise awareness for an organization that while it is non-profit, I suspect, has a very highly paid administration (see: American Red Cross). The key market demographic of football broadcasts is 18-34 year old men, and only 450 men die of breast cancer in the U.S. each year. While the disease in itself is terrible, medical advances and detection over the last 20 years have made it a non-entity compared to obesity/heart disease or any number of the other ways that American's can off-themselves every year such as traffic accidents, hand gun accidents, suicide et al.

Wearing pink will NEVER cure breast cancer. It also seems that there are far more important issues facing the country, more specifically the demographic actually watching the games, that would require a marketing campaign similar to this organization while being far more effective at saving or improving life. I am not pro cancer, but I am anti clever marketing to monetize a terrible disease. That is all that this really is.

It's because we don't want to break our stupid tradition of wearing orange & white only. Most people don't even realize that the original UT colors were black & khaki. WE SHOULD BE WEARING PINK TO SHOW SUPPORT. PERIOD.
No Tennessee tradition is stupid, remember that. :nono:

Wow.. some of your responses surprise me. Especially the negative ones towards awareness of breast cancer.

Sorry. I would proudly wear a pink UT shirt.. I've lost too many friends and family to this terrible disease.

Who isn't aware of cancer, and aware that it ****ing sucks? Does wearing pink to remind the world that "you really care" impress me? No. Its the same as those dumb ass yellow ribbons on cars.

Didn't cross my mind but Im pretty sure they support breast cancer anyways. Tennessee has always been good about supporting cancer.

Let me help clear it up for those that do not understand why the breast cancer advertising is in the NFL and college football.....

Who watches football????

Predominantly 18-34 ur old MEN

What do many men like????

Boobs

What disease is taking our mothers, daughters, loved ones?

Breast Cancer.

It is the perfect ad campaign to the perfect audience. Raising awareness in men is not a bad thing. Ever.

Trust me, sit and watch someone fight for years, just to finally lose everything and die, you might change your smart ass tones about the color pink and its meaning in our sports.

I wish UT would help spread the awareness but I am not holding my breath.

So lets just pass on this and send money.

Really surprised at some of the *******S IN THIS THREAD. Like i said my mom is currently in a fight against breast cancer. Proceeds from awareness events, donations, clothing etc does help ALOT. Can one of u tell me the cost of each chemo treatment?

This should not even be an arguement. Crazy that some people are on here trying to justify why we do not wear it! Regardless of your opinion, what is it going to hurt to show support? You say, "pink is for wussies, etc!" That is just the most ignorant, backwards ass arguemnet I have ever heard. I have been personally effected by breast cancer and can tell you it sucks. It does not matter whether you think the money is going to one place for R&D or another department. What matters is we show our support for awareness and that UT is sensitive to the matter. For those asking "what about prostate cancer?" . No one is making less of the issue. However, many organizations raise cause and have deemed this month Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At a minimum, we can show support and to do nothing is a shame. Amzing how many d-c-s are on this site. BIG FREAKING DEAL IF THEY WEAR SOME SORT OF PINK! BTW, women do watch the games, attend the university, etc. Let's be behind those not to mention, you mom, sister, daughter or spouse.

The NFL Pink campaign is designed to get more women fans and their money flowing into the NFL. There's nothing nefarious about that, its actually a brilliant plan.

No disrespect to breast cancer but I'm glad I get sick of seeing it. It seems like it is breast cancer awareness month all year now. I know it's sad but my wife agrees.

No disrespect but if your wife ever gets diagnosed with it she will change her view. You will as well.

Well I wear Orange I support of the Vols and we see how thats been helping lately, I just don't see how since some people or teams decide not to wear pink that it makes people mad. If something does happen to my wife (in all seriousness I pray that it doesn't) I would be more concerned with my insurance helping than the color pink.

Before my Mother passed, she fought breast cancer for the last twenty years of her life. Two masectomies. It has hit my family hard. Yet I tire of all the symbolism out there today for various causes and the desire for everyone to be doing the same thing. You want to support cancer research? Great idea but send the organization you support the money directly. The "pink outs" benefit the makers of the pink items (surprised?) instead of the researchers. So actually I am fine with UT doing something else other than going "pink".
