Several good points brought up in response to this post.
1. Hurd had the big run off the jet motion in the second half. That was set up by actually running the jet sweep to Pig earlier.
2. Most teams that run a spread offense, like we are running now, have a more mobile QB. Worley is doing a good job for us this year, but he is a more pro-style QB. He does not have the speed to be an effective runner. This fact negates the read option off of the jet motion. Limits the playbook. For the same reason, the zone read play has turned into a dive play for us. With a more mobile QB, the jet motion & the zone read both become more effective plays for the offense.
3. The coaches are professional coaches. You can bet that they will look at the game film and come up with options that will work, i.e. play action off of the jet sweep. We, as the Monday Morning Quarterback Crowd, are smart enough to see the problems with this play. Trust me, the guys who make 6 figures a year are smart enough to see it too. They will adjust. After all, they did in the second half. Refer to the Hurd 40 yard run.
4. This O-line is young. They will improve throughout the season and into next season. Brick by brick, remember?
5. That was the number 4 team in the country. Their defense is number 19 in the country in total defense. In other words, that was a damn good football team we lost to. With that in mind, the scheme worked. First half was a struggle, but as the game wore on, we started having some success on offense. Up tempo offenses are designed to wear down defenses & take advantage of the mental & physical mistakes resulting from the fatigue.
Now, let me clarify something I said earlier. Worley is not the most mobile of QBs. That does not mean we need to bench him for a more mobile QB. He does too many other things right. He was not recruited to play in an up-tempo, spread offense like Coach Jones runs.
