Why Is Florida A Must Win For Butch?

I've seen so many posts with the line "Butch better win in Gainesville!"

and I ask why? Florida still has more depth and talent than us(its close) and we are playing on the road in a very loud stadium. I just hope we compete and fight for 4 quarters win or lose I think we have a good coach and a team that is a year away from competing for an SEC championship.

How many more years can UT be "one year away?"

Because we get slogans, coach speak, excuses, and no big wins.

It's time for some quality wins.

It's time for Butch to prove he's a SEC Coach. He's a great recruiter and PR image for TN, but he needs to prove he can get some wins. Vandy, SCjr, and Kentucky doesn't count.
. By the number of likes to this post I would guess this may be the feeling of most fans!??

You had a totally different situation with Zook, the administration there was willing to pay and hire a tier 1 coach. How many times does the UT administration have to show you they are unwilling to do this? That being fact, when given the choice of another mid-major coach as a replacement, I would rather give Butch more time as long as he is filling the roster with top players.

Meyer was a huge gamble back then.

Here's a useful scale for measuring Coach pressure:

The Pressure Cooker: No pressure to Category 6 Boiler --
6 -- Win this or you're fired
5 -- Win this or you're on the hot seat, rest of season will decide your fate
4 -- Win this or we lose faith in you as the future of our program
3 -- Win this or our faith in you is tarnished somewhat
2 -- Win this please, we have faith in you either way, but want this win
1 -- Win this please, we have faith, but this is an opportunity for you to excel
0 -- Win this if you can, but we know it's unrealistic of us to ask at this point

Some folks don't have 0 to 6 ... all they've got is an on-off switch. Fire him, or keep him. He sucks, or he rocks.

That's just too simple for me. For me, this game is a 3. If it were Vandy, it'd be a 4 or 5. North Texas, a 5 or 6. On the flip side, the Bama game would be a 0 or 1, Georgia a 1 or 2.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is a must win game. Until he beats AL, GA, FL, or a ranked non-conference team, he hasn't proven anything to anyone in the football world. We are not legit NC contenders right now. We are barely legit contenders for the SEC East. This is about proving to the blue chip recruits that he is in fact building a elite football program, not building a sales and marketing department. Right now he is recruiting "lights out". But can he coach at the level we need to win the big one? That is the question we all need answered. That is why this game matters. We aren't talking about playing a top 10 program either. This Florida team is as bad if not worse than we are and we have had this monkey on our back for 10 years. If he can't beat this Florida team, then we all need to temper our expectation for this year to be the exact same as last year, a bottom of the barrel bowl game and a 7-6 finish. He has to beat FL, GA, or AL this year or he is going to lose about half of his supporters and those that already don't like him will be howling at full volume.

You made my point: we will get what we deserve as a university for taking the mentality that we do.

Who cares about 24/7 ratings? We have more talent. Period. We a better team on paper. But we have bad coaching

Being a better team on paper means nothing, UT needs to be the better team on the field for FOUR quarters.

A must win game is saying the coach is going to be fired if he loses. I hate to tell everyone but he could lose this game next year and the year after and still not be fired. He is making the team better. No matter what anyone thinks on this forum coaches do not get fired if they do better every year. So with that statement he could go 7-5 this year, 8-4 next year and will not be fired. Get over it!

Truthfully, I think we have to be patient with Butch. I know we're all ready for that marquis win and its frustrating bc we see so many signs pointed in the right direction yet we havent arrived. If any fanbase is due win, its this one.

However, if we adjust our long terms for a minute. Lets all remember not too long ago we had a pretty boy, UGA legacy at the helm, and before that a diddy's boy. This roster had been depleted by attrition and by lack of caring.

Oklahoma had four and five year full on recruiting classes to our two. We battled a battle hardened team with a roster 2 yrs heavy....and arguably still devoid of good OL talent....down to the wire.

I think any rational fan would see 8-4 this year as a win. With a bowl game win. 9-4.

My point was that their DL is deeper and more experienced than ours.

No one is acting like losing Maggitt is a big deal. It is a huge blow to our defense. The 2nd half of the OU game it was obvious.

Our freshman are talented, but not playing or producing like 5th yr seniors.

Getting O'Brien back will be big

I agree that losing Maggitt is a big loss for our DL, so please don't misunderstand. But I disagree about the second half of OU game illustrating it.

Maggitt left the game in the second quarter at about the 9 minute mark of the second quarter. The next 6 OU drives which included a couple in the second quarter, resulted in 27 plays for 86 yards and only 3 points. That's 3.2 yards per play.....compared to the 6 defensive drives that he did play which saw OU total 57 yds, or 2.2 yards per play, really no difference.

The difference, IMHO, was when the defense finally wore down the last two OU drives after so much time on the field. Missing Maggitt going forward does hurt, a lot, the defense and team overall. But the second half and even the second half of the second quarter, didn't really prove it.

Butch is in his 3rd year, attrition under Kiffin is completely irrelevant and attrition under Dooley is fastly approaching irrelevant too. We've lost 19 guys in 2 yrs and 3 games on Butch's watch. Who is that attrition attributed to?

OP where have you been the past decade? IMO we have the better QB and O line in this game. UF gets the edge on D but our D is nothing to sneeze at either. IF CBJ cannot start winning these crucial games againts teams like UF when they are down, then what is going to happen when they are actually good?

Meyer was a huge gamble back then.

Yeah, the guy who had built two struggling mid-major programs into big winners within his first two years. A guy who had Utah (5-6 before he took over) undefeated and ranked in the top ten by his second year.

If that guy was a "huge gamble", what would you call Butch Jones?

Oklahoma is the model for stability, and basing or formulating one's opinion (which seems prevailing) of Butch Jones on this game alone...is a bit premature.

You want irrelevant. look at Tennessee for the last decade. We are just now coming into our own. Im not devaluing your opinion. But, just cautioning a rush to judgement. As many feel we've got a good coach in place. If we can just get the cupboard stocked with four full classes we will contend for SECC's. Attrition aside, simply having good upoerclass OL/DL and Qb would put us in contention for the SECC. Unfortunately, we are questionable at those key positions. The future is bright, but, in my unqualified eyes we need more talent there, and depth. Which comes from recruiting and lack of attrition. So you see, it isnt irrelevant.

Even Butch said it himself, and many agree. We are a year away. Maybe two.

The attrition is his, the attrition from 5 years ago IS irrelevant to this team and definitely next year. We'll have 9 less JR's next year and 8 less SR's (experience and depth) because recruits from his classes bailed on his watch. DeAnthony Arnett, for example, eaving in 2011 doesn't affect team 119 in 2015.

at the particular points in their careers...I'd call it about the same....based on records and where they coached

Utah wasn't in the toilet when he took over...one bad year isn't indicative of where that program had gone in the previous 10 or so...it was an up and down program for sure. Plus Whittingham stayed on and probably had a hand in the uptick as well.

Meyer definitely benefited from a much better roster when he too the UF job.

Cause would be 10-2 in your scenario! The next year 11-1 the next year NC. Pretty easy to understand. He isn't getting fired if his record continuously gets better. It's a reality.

How is it not?

Butch hasn't done jack squat against anyone except inferior opponents and a lousy Carolina teams. He gave away Oklahoma by paying scared. If he loses again to Florida with a sub par team would you really expect him to beat a good Florida team?

I wouldn't.

So by your reasoning you'd be happy if we never beat Florida as long as we won 10 games.

That screams mark richt.
