Why Is Florida A Must Win For Butch?

If you expect us to compete for an SEC championship NEXT year, IMO, we need to beat the teams we're supposed to beat THIS year. If we lose to UF again, who's going through a QB carousel and a new coaching staff, then we're the same team we were the previous two years of our current regime.

Secondly, competing and fighting for 4 quarters is a phrase for underachievers. We're past that phase. The program is heading in a nice direction, but if Butch doesn't pull this one off, there's gonna be some rumbling.

It's not a carousel, they have settled on Grier.

This is definitely a game we "should" win. I completely agree with that.

Unlike many, I don't see this as a disaster if we lose. It will be bad, it will be a big setback, but Butch will still have plenty of time to turn it around. I am willing to go down with the Butch Jones ship.

Next year a loss in a game like this will be completely unacceptable. This year it's just really bad.

In the (I think unlikely) event we lose, we will have another 8 games this season and Butch (short of having a 4-8 record this year) will have a whole other season to make it right.

Because...
We have the most returning starters in the SEC
We have the talent advantage for the first time in a long time
Florida is at their lowest point since probation
Florida has a first year coach implementing his system without a settled QB
Because of the way Butch has lost to Vandy, Florida last year, and Oklahoma this year
It's a rivalry game that formerly decided the SEC East Champion
If we lose it's 11 straight years during a time when Florida and the East has been the weakest since 14 team SEC

The bottom line is Butch has done nothing to prove he is a big time SEC Saturday coach. He's fantastic Monday - Friday but the currency of his tenure is on Saturdays. He is wedded to an offense that looks like it takes advantage of speed mismatches in mid-majors that don't exist in the SEC. It's Judgment Day on his offense this Saturday. We should steam roll this Florida team by two scores or more (same with Oklahoma this year).

It's a must win because we aren't really sure we can do it. Butch has a LOT to prove this Saturday. I hope he and his coaches and Team 119 get it done.

Seriously???

The great pumpkin was 0-5 as actual head coach (won year one at home as interim) before FINALLY beating them during the NC year.

Our program is in way worse shape than in the late 80's early 90's.

Let's just give up on Jones and try yet again to find the UT messiah.

We re not exactly playing against the UF teams of the 90s either.

I've seen so many posts with the line "Butch better win in Gainesville!"

and I ask why? Florida still has more depth and talent than us(its close) and we are playing on the road in a very loud stadium. I just hope we compete and fight for 4 quarters win or lose I think we have a good coach and a team that is a year away from competing for an SEC championship.
please stop the next year BS. Its getting old. 5 days away and people already making exscuses for prophet Butch. This Staff has Cost Tennessee 3 games IMO including last years game with UF . Butch hired Debord , not the players.

I find it hilarious we keep seeing people post about him needing to "learn how to win". And these are posters that are supporting him. Come on. He's making top tier money and he's coaching at a upper echelon school. He doesn't get to learn on the job. And what coaches need to learn how to win, anyway? That's like saying a heart surgeon needs to learn how to do heart surgery. Or a lawyer needs to learn the law. Was Meyer unable to win for years and years? Saban? How frequently do guys do nothing for years and then all of a sudden break out and take over a conference?

Ask Zook where top 5 classes and .500 records in the SEC get you. If that becomes the norm here and we don't view our coach and program the same way as UF then we deserve what we may get.

You had a totally different situation with Zook, the administration there was willing to pay and hire a tier 1 coach. How many times does the UT administration have to show you they are unwilling to do this? That being fact, when given the choice of another mid-major coach as a replacement, I would rather give Butch more time as long as he is filling the roster with top players.

Some will be angry no matter the outcome frankly. They've always been angry except for about an hour on January 4th, 1999.

Well, you're an underdog on the road in the SEC against a team that has been historically better than you for over a decade. You have an inferior staff headed by a coach who can't win a big game. You have a weak OL with a QB that can't throw the deep ball and a group of wide receivers that aren't performing.

This is what I'm reading thread after thread after thread. And if all of this is true, then what makes any of you "doubters" think the Vols have even the remotest chance to win this Saturday???

Because we get slogans, coach speak, excuses, and no big wins.

It's time for some quality wins.

It's time for Butch to prove he's a SEC Coach. He's a great recruiter and PR image for TN, but he needs to prove he can get some wins. Vandy, SCjr, and Kentucky doesn't count.

^^^ This. I want CBJ to succeed as much as any Vol fan, but I think fans have anointed him as the savior of the program a little prematurely. Right now, he has recruited very well and been a good ambassador for the program, but until UT breaks some of these long and ridiculous losing streaks against the other big programs, I am withholding judgment. Needs to win 2 of these 4 - UF, UGA, Bama, Mizzou and the fans will be okay. Win 1 of these 4 and the fans will not be happy, but CBJ will still get a pass. Lose all 4, then some of the reds will start getting very restless.

It's the red's who have annointed him. The can't say anything other than "Butch gets it!" crowd.

If we don't win this game then we will be lucky to get to a bowl. 6-6 season probable. If we do win the GA game could be for the east. Its that simple

Surprised so many people here are okay with a loss to Florida

This is a MUST WIN whether you accept it or not

Last year, Florida was at their worst in my lifetime - bad enough to get their coach fired. And we lost at home with full checkerboard. 10 years.

If we lose again, a lot of the fanbase is going to turn on Butch and that seat is gonna get hot.

We need to see progress in year 3. Progress includes winning games you once did not. This is not Alabama or Oklahoma. This is an easy game

Right or wrong that is reality

WHY?

What are UT fans supposed to say?

" I sure hope we lose this weekend to one of our most hated rivals"??

" We are on schedule to compete for a championship in 2016 so it's cool to lose games we are in complete control of in the 4th quarter" ???

"Recruiting is going well so on the field results don't matter"??

"Our coach has the best slogans in the SEC so who cares what happens on the field".

The mentality of some on here is beyond asinine.

Once upon a time, there were two must wins on the schedule for Vol fans...FL and AL.

Now a large portion of the fan base seems content with observing the process, defending coaches at all costs, and getting participation trophies.

It isn't a must win

Yes it is. If we lose to a mediocre at best team then Butch just thought he was hearing negative things after the OU loss. What Hugh Freeze has done at Ole Miss in yrs 3 and 4 makes it hard to justify not winning more at a much better football program. Freeze walked into just a big of a mess from a talent standpoint as Butch did. And Freeze is doing it in a much better SEC West vs an Average at best SEC East.A loss would put Butch at 0-3 vs Florida and 5-8 against the east with 4 of those wins against UK and SCe. Which means 1-8 against UF,GA,Mizzou and Candy then throw in 0-4 vs the West including 0-2 against Ala with none of the 4 West games even being close. Then throw in something like 1-13 vs ranked teams there is no excuse to not start winning at least a game or 2 in which we are underdogs. So yes this is a huge game for morale and confidence in Butch from fans and Alumni.

Because people are pissed about the last ten years, they hate the way the OK game went down, and they believe in all the recruiting stars too much.

Some of it is fair, some isn't. Is what it is.

great post m8. people moan about how butch talks about how young our team is, but he's not wrong... Most teams start winning when the age of the team is mostly upperclassmen, and we're still mostly underclassmen. Not saying that we're doomed to be 6-6, just is what it is. The game will be close, but i think the vols win.

because Florida is one of our major rivals and this game makes or breaks the fan base's morale. It's also because Butch Jones has talked a big game so far but hasn't given us anything on the field.
