Why is Butch Jones (still) hated so much?

Wasting talent
Losing to the worse Florida teams I have ever seen.
2014 lost 10-9
2015 - couldn't stop 4th downs, dobbs balled out
16 won
17 lost on a bust coverage hail mary
How many times in the Jones era did the Vols give up a long pass for a TD with less than a minute to go? It was more than just the one.

Seems that many threads turn into eith a Jones or Kiffin bashing thread. Don’t get me wrong; I hate CLK came in and ran half the team off and had virtually none of his recruiting class pan out and, Jones never could get over the hill. But, there seems to be more hatred towards Jones on VN threads than any of the other coaches and this includes Pruitt.

Is it because more was expected of him or that we didn’t really expect more from the other coaches? I mean, Pruitt could have completely devastated the program but yet he doesn’t seem the most disliked of our coaches. Jones was like forever and three coaches ago but, again, he’s beat down still and a lot.
He somehow beat Florida and georgia and still fumbled the east.

I wouldn't say hate, but of the many HCs we had wandering the wilderness, he'll top my list. Largely because, with Jones, it was smoke and mirrors. @joevols89 quoted the many "slogans" we've suffered through - more distractions than value added, and that became more clear as time went on. Even 18yr olds figure that out quickly. I never thought he adapted/evolved his offense - stuck to the same thing year/year in a conference that'll adapt at all cost (CJH has found that out in the past 2 years). Defense never seemed to evolve - it was solid for NC games, got run over at times playing big time SEC and other opponents. I don't recall him firing anyone, but his replacements never seemed to be anything of note. The hires never seemed to be commensurate with what a Tennessee would want, and definitely not even remotely innovative (evolutionary or revolutionary). They had to fit Jone's need, not what was actually needed in an ever evolving conference.

I know folks hate him for it - but I thought going to work for Saban might help a middle of pack HC with SEC experience evolve/improve (plus he was OUT of here!). Arkansas State has shown that to be ridiculous, I doubt he learned a dang thing. He just doesn't have it period. After all that time as an "analyst" he still won't change his offensive philosophy, defense is still an afterthought and doesn't have the ability to evaluate coaching talent. He's done. If he's smart he'd drop down to Div II.

So here's the worst thing. He himself is the worst problem, a nightmare - too hard headed and just doesn't have the job skills for his current level. The folks that pay the most for it are those that "work" for him - the assistants, and more so the players. He is about himself - he's not about others, and he's in charge. And I guess a big reason for why I dislike that characteristic is that it describes the majority of the bosses I've worked for throughout the years, so many others suffer for the ego and vanity of the primary leader, however long or short the stint is. And that includes the VN cadre whoever gone though ALL of these HCs and are still here today. /rant

Yep, this right here. I root for Kiffin, Pruitt, Dooley, Wade Houston and everyone else to win wherever they are, have a happy life, earn big paychecks for themselves and their families and loved ones, etc. I was rooting for Jones to have success too until he had the ****-eating grin with the cigar after the Bama game. If he had already been gone 4+ years, I would've still felt good for him, but celebrating Nick Saban's players defeating the team that he himself recruited and "developed" was so lame as hell. I'd still root for Arkansas State over Florida, Penn State and several other teams, but they never actually play those teams so I always root against Butch.

Same. I had no ill will against the dude until that game. After that F that lame ass loser.

Because he's Botch Jones.

Because he’s a backstabbing, lying, arrogant dumbass traitor who set our program back YEARS who got fired for being so incompetent and then celebrated BEATING HIS OWN PLAYERS THAT HE RECRUITED while being Satans little ballwasher. I’ll never forgive that freaking hack and I hope he gets fired from every job he ever has because he’s not fit to be a water boy in a college football program.
You nailed it better than I ever could. He was two faced.

He wasted talent and couldn't coach to save his life.

The worst in game decisions I've ever witnessed. Who the hell kicks a FG on the one yard line?

He had the O-line under a 300lbs average in the SEC.

The stupid slogans and he could talk for 10 minutes and not say a damn word.

He let our SC program go to crap

He goes to Bama and smokes a cigar and yells roll tide like a freaking clown.

Butch is more than a bad coach. He's a goober

Never forget him kicking a FG against Oklahoma in 2015 from the 1 yard line. And not going for two and playing for OT against A&M in 2016 with Kamera running all over a tired A&M defense of course we lost both of those games. Butch had no stones.

Rhetorical?

The reason I have the most animosity towards Butch is because so many of you liked him so much. It was obvious he was trash by Florida 2014 if not sooner. And yet we still had 3.5 years left of people defending his awfulness.

If you ever met the guy, you’d understand why. But he’s equally as hated as Pruitt imo. At least on the hill. Both of them are scumbags personality and character wise. Dooley could be an irritable prick sometimes with his OCD bullshít but he was easily the most likeable of our 3 post-Kiffin losers.
None of the three turned out to be a good head coach. I thought Dooley walked into the worst situation. He had no chance. Cornbread gets trashed a little more than he deserves, e.g. he brought J.J. back. But he was not up for the job and got us busted. Butch worked hard and talked harder. Like the man said, all hat and no cattle.

Still the dumbest decision I've ever seen a Vol HC make and it's not close
Everybody at the game and everybody watching at home knew what he needed to do !! It was embarrassing as hell for the rest of the country to see how stupid our head coach was. I was done with him from that night till this good day !! I still despise that sissy ass tough guy wannabe ! !
