Why is Butch Jones (still) hated so much?

The hatred should be on the ADs that brought Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt here. Not a one of them had the resume to be the Tennessee coach.

We definitely mastered the art of the underwhelming hire. Dooley was at least articulate. I don’t know how you talk to Jones and Pruitt and even get past the first interview.

Why we should we hate anyone? ADs, especially ones like Hamilton and Fulmer, rarely, if ever, can make a unilateral decision to hire the HFC at a school like Tennessee

The distaste for Butch Jones hire should be directed at the UT administration follies that warned off more suitable hires. Butch Jones wanted the job when others didn’t. He saw Tennessee as a destination job regardless of the embarrassments of UT administration in-fighting, etc. Alas, he wasn’t up to the challenge, as Dobb’s graduation revealed his feet of clay.

Because Botch Jones did less with more that any other UT coach in living memory.

Pruitt was an embarrassment. He butchered the English language.

It's because of how fake he was. He never just talked directly like a normal person. Everything was a marketing ploy with some corny slogan and he wasn't honest with his players. And prior to Pruitt, his last year was the worst season in program history. The worst part of it is he really did land some elite talent but managed to squander it.

Following Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and Cincinnati definitely helped Butch's career. Kelly doesn't get a ton of respect around here, but he is a Top 20 coach by any measure, maybe Top10, and he really set the table for Butch at both places.

Mike DeBord deserved a lot of credit for holding things together in 15-16. He was the one guy that Butch did not push around. I think the collapse happens sooner without him steadying the offense and prepping them to execute again when the plays were breaking down, which happened every 3rd or 4th play because of the poor OLine play (for various reasons).
I had a strong feeling after the Oklahoma game in ‘15 that Butch wasn’t the one. Follow that game with Florida and Arkansas and I could have sworn he threw them so as not to be too good too fast.

Back at the end of the ‘12 season, who could we have gotten instead?

The Dooley hire was an “OH ****” moment because Kiffin left us at such a terrible moment. I still hate the hire, but I also understand why that one was made in the way it was. However, the other two, especially Pruitt, you absolutely blame the AD and those in charge. I’m sure Butch, who was a decent salesman, be it a snake of a salesman, gave a good pitch and at least had a head coaching resume to back it up. But Pruitt should have never touched this program. This is not a place where one can learn on the job.

I thought a big part of that was because he never felt comfortable here, but he speaks the same way at Arkansas St.

I do think he was always uncomfortable here with the expectations and culture, but he's also just a strange guy.

1. People hated the hire to begin with, so hating on him now gives them validation.

2. He squandered a load of talent, made terrible in-game coaching decisions, he made terrible player personnel decisions, and had some really stupid slogans.

3. He took the massive payout and, instead of getting a real job, he took a low paying job and drained every penny he could from UT. . . at Alabama - then blew cigar smoke in all our faces after their win.

4. He's an easy person to pick on in general.

5. He lost to Vanderbilt and missed a huge bowl game because of it.

6. Barb's Chip Dip

7. A combination of all those things.

Any of those things would bring hate his way. Add them all together and you have someone who is pretty much universally disliked.
Pretty much
