Why is Butch Jones (still) hated so much?

NGL he looks very stoic there. If he wasn't a bust that picture was fire. That would be my pfp for the rest of my life, lol.

The word at the time was that he was the one insisting on having his image put up there next to 2 of the greatest legends of all time at UT.
He had hardly earned that distinction.
Has to be one of the most egotistical acts I have ever observed.
I can't stand egotistical people.
An ego is a wonderful thing to waste.

Was he corny? Yes. Did he underachieve? For sure. Was I ready for him to go when he left. Absolutely.

But there's no reason to hate him. He got offered a job at least 3 other people turned down. It ended up being too much for him. He gave us the only 2 decent seasons between Fulmer and Heupel.

Pruitt is the one who deserves all the hate. Terrible head coach who, had Heupel not turned out to be amazing, could have buried our program. Kiffin is the other. Calling our commits to tell them not to enroll and leaving like a bitch in the middle of the night. He seems grown up some now, but I wouldn't trust him.

Butch and Dooley were just doofuses in over their heads. Especially Dooley.
I disagree. I think Butch was the worst one of the bunch because he built up all this good will and momentum in the program and the second it started going south, he couldn't handle it and his vitriol on the fans was uncalled for.

Dooley was just a poor coach, but he was offered a golden goose of a job at a point in his career that was just as wild as Lane Kiffin getting a NFL head coaching gig at 31 years old.

Jeremy Pruitt was a long time well regarded defensive coordinator who had success across multiple SEC programs. While he had plenty of unknowns, being able to hire Saban or Kirby's right hand men at the time was not a bad consolation hire when it was down to Pruitt and Mel Tucker. And just like Dooley, both of them would have been clowns and morons to turn down the head coaching job at Tennessee given where they were in their careers.

I don't fault Kiffin for leaving Tennessee for the one place he held as his dream job
I don't fault Dooley for taking the Tennessee job that he was offered when he had a 17-20 record at a mid major
I don't fault Jeremy Pruitt for take the Tennessee job that he was offered as a guy with zero head coaching experience

I do fault Butch for carefully building a program that trended up his first 4 years and yet, that 4 year foundation crumbled literally in weeks so fast that he couldn't even coach out the entire season.

Butch was the only one of the bunch who had some semblance of what running a stable program looks and feels like. And yet the minute he hit adversity, he can't mentally handle it and goes postal on everyone including the fans.

I can't fault Dooley and Pruitt for taking a job they had no business being offered and doing a crap job.

1. People hated the hire to begin with, so hating on him now gives them validation.

2. He squandered a load of talent, made terrible in-game coaching decisions, he made terrible player personnel decisions, and had some really stupid slogans.

3. He took the massive payout and, instead of getting a real job, he took a low paying job and drained every penny he could from UT. . . at Alabama - then blew cigar smoke in all our faces after their win.

4. He's an easy person to pick on in general.

5. He lost to Vanderbilt and missed a huge bowl game because of it.

6. Barb's Chip Dip

7. A combination of all those things.

Any of those things would bring hate his way. Add them all together and you have someone who is pretty much universally disliked.
8. The trash can
9. He created a very toxic environment among the players and the staff.
10. He went to band camp

You just gave a great example of what incompetent AD's at hiring coaches can do to a program. Hamilton to Fulmer, what a mess.
