Why is Butch Jones (still) hated so much?

2) Butch got the fanbase excited late in 2014 and 2015 and came into the 2016 season expected to win the SEC East. The incredible flop to end the 2016 season smashed people's hopes. Dooley and Pruitt, in contrast, never had the team playing well enough to do that. Having your hopes built up just for them to be smashed is probably worse than never getting them built up to begin with.

It is kind of ironic though that he seems to be the most hated given that he objectively was a better coach than Dooley and Pruitt and didn't get the program in NCAA trouble like Pruitt did.

Any good HC at Tennessee would've won the SEC East in 2015 and 2016 as well easily

It's like being the best looking Oak Ridge Boy, who gives a flying F***

Kiffin, Dooley, Jones, Pruitt all had a hand in the destruction of our program for a decade and each in their own way through inept coaching, arrogance, and lack of respect or love for our program helped cause the mess...

It is true that Jones was the "best" of these coaches record wise but it was due to outstanding players literally making plays to save each game.

Even our great wins vs Florida, UGA, Va Tech, etc during this time we were having to come from behind or complete some miracle play to win it

Kinda odd to dismiss success as being the result of talented players. That’s a coach’s job…to recruit talented players. Butch did that better than the others, which is why he had more success than the others. That’s how that works.

But yes, you’re right…we’re comparing turds. Which is inevitable in a thread like this.

He's a "Champion of Life"
He's got a "5 Star Heart"
He layed "Brick after Brick"
He was a walking talking cliche that was an embarrassment to the program. He could have just owned his shortcomings, but he wanted to give cheesy one-liners to explain away his flaws. He is a memorable coach, but not in a good way.

It ain’t a high bar to be better than Dooley or Pruitt. Dooley never got another head coach position and a university would be dumber than a sack of hammers to put Pruitt in charge of anything. Botch did get the Arky St job but that’s probably his top end. And that’s no plum. Ever been to Jonesboro?

Had a golden chance to be in SECCG and blew it all up. Maybe that was a good omen because if he had won the East that season he probably would have gotten a contract extension. IMO, as many others have said, the cigar thing in Bama's locker room after a beat down of his own players he recruited is about as low class as you can get. No respect for him in any way.

he beat Georgia and Florida but then he led Tennessee to it's first ever 0-8 season in the SEC. what an embarrassment of a human.

also Gump never lied to his players to get them to come here. He sucked at cheating but IMO that's better that being a coach who's just a snake oil used car salesman.

I hate Gump but for different reasons.

I don't really hate Dooley because he was given a job that he never should have had. my hate goes toward UT leadership at the time for not having a better hold of Lane Kiffin or a better plan to succeed Fulmer.

I think they had a plan to succeed Fulmer with Kiffin and the high profile and proven assistants all coming on board. No way to plan or know USC would come calling for him a year later. The problem was panicking after he left

they could have made a contract that made it MUCH harder to leave for UCLA after just one year. He got to basically walk away (nearly) for free.

Also I don't really believe that version of Kiffin was the right hire. he's a much better coach now than he was 16 years ago. I don't think he would have made a huge impact back then.

Certainly he's matured, both as a coach and a person since then. That being said, he would have been better than the next three hires we subsequently made after him.

You and I are in the same boat. I honestly have nothing against Dooley whatsoever. He was in over his head, but at the time the hire needed to be made quickly due to the Kiffin debacle. As you said, that’s on leadership, not Dooley.

I was indifferent to Butch and just thought he was a bad coach when he was fired. I got annoyed that he truly didn't look for employment to offset the buyout like his contract stipulated and took the "gopher" job at Bama for $33k a year just to stick it to UT.

The nail in the coffin for me was him taking pics smoking a cigar have getting throttled by Bama the following year was unforgivable.

F him and I hope he never truly finds success in life. Yes, I am petty!!!

Was he corny? Yes. Did he underachieve? For sure. Was I ready for him to go when he left. Absolutely.

But there's no reason to hate him. He got offered a job at least 3 other people turned down. It ended up being too much for him. He gave us the only 2 decent seasons between Fulmer and Heupel.

Pruitt is the one who deserves all the hate. Terrible head coach who, had Heupel not turned out to be amazing, could have buried our program. Kiffin is the other. Calling our commits to tell them not to enroll and leaving like a bitch in the middle of the night. He seems grown up some now, but I wouldn't trust him.

Butch and Dooley were just doofuses in over their heads. Especially Dooley.

I never spoke to his mother personally to make an opinion of that one way or another.

The reason he left Tennessee is because he was LIED to and made promises that didn't come true.

Were talking about the man who was a lock to be our all time leading rusher. I won't blame him for how things turned out because look how Jones acted after he left. He was a clown.
