Why dont fans support this program no matter how bad the times get?

Why do so many fans have to be fair weather fans and only support a program when they are winning? I think if you are a VFL you will support this team and program no matter how many games they win.
Screw you. Our fans are still here after a decade and a half of pure crap. Most fanbases would've bailed by now. Try blaming someone else.

I watched every game from 2008-2016. That is a lot of suffering. In 2017 I decided I have other things that bring me enjoyment I could do on Saturdays instead of watching TN suck. I’m not switching teams or anything (in fact TN sucking makes all of CFB less interesting for me). I will turn the game on if I am around a TV. Until we are truly competitive again I won’t make a point of watching.
Hah, when I was growing up, they were rarely on TV. Had to wait for the Johnny Majors show! We beat Bama in the Bear's last year(1982) and church attendance was sparse and it dismissed early so we could get home to watch the highlights of that great victory coming in Johnny's 6th year as coach of the Vols. My how things have changed!

So hypothetically if a wife loves her husband with all her heart but he punches her in the gut 10 times a year for 15 years in a row. Is she just suppose to continue to allow him to keep punching her in the gut? No she’ll learn to love from a distance. Now with that being said I love the Vols but if nobody can comprehend why fans are so frustrated then maybe they should check themselves.

Jesus Christ like any of us would still be here if we were only fair weather fans. Why do you people have to make a post every week blaming the fans? I seriously don’t get it.

I doubt that some of these NegaVols are even fans! The young fans think it's an easy fix and that you just pour money out by the bucket load for the quick fix thus they freak out if their simplistic thought isn't the 1st thing UT does.
correct--also a lot of keyboard warriors and twitter thumb heroes out there that know they will not be held accountable

Accountable for what, the fact the only fans actually contributing to the sinking of the program are the ones still dumping their money into it? And also accountable to who, you?

I've got a friend I graduated high school with who is a huge Alabama fan and despises TN. He is a member of the VN forum for years, posts under a Vols moniker and is only on here to push buttons and antagonize Vol fans. He gets a kick out of it and he's the reason I feel many of our NegaVol fans aren't really Vol fans here on VN. I'd let you know who he is but he won't tell me the name he goes by here. Coincidentally he knew Coach Pruitt back in his days at MTSU and played a bunch of pick up basketball with him at the time. Said Pruitt was always looking to pick a fight back then.

There's only one person here who admits to knowing a poster who for sure isn't a Vol fan, and is just here to cause problems.

Seriously? Thumb heroes? If you’re not sure about your loyalty to UT please feel to check your accountability at the door

Good Grief. I assume you're trolling, but just in case:

A lot of us are VFLs, but the complete and utter incompetence of the admin over the last 15 years has robbed the sport of the fun. And in the end, it's gotta be fun to be a fan, at least a majority of the time. You can have fun even in a loss, if its a good game and your team is playing well.

Tennessee has become a drudgery to watch, especially with Slingblade Skoalcan and his infatuation with JG. We all have jobs, responsibilities, a lot of things we HAVE to do. Tennessee football isn't a HAVE to do, it should be a WANT to do.

So, don't play the "I'm a Better Fan" BS card. No one buys that here. We are all fans, its just that most of us demand that our team and admin care at least as much as we do. Ideally, they care much more. That hasn't seemed to be the case for quite awhile.
Amen

Because no matter how you look at it every team has fair weather fans, die hards, occasional fans. Then there are those like most of us who know more about football than the people actually getting paid big money to do it fans

In the early-mid 70s we were on as much as all the other big boys

The brutally honest answer is UT was relevant during many of these fans’ formative years (including mine) and they want to relive that time of their lives. If you told me any team in any other sport that hasn’t won a championship in 22 years and hasn’t been relevant for half that time should demand to compete with the top teams every year I would tell you to lower your expectations. But in everyone’s defense, there is plenty of blame to go around for it getting this way...

Yes, I remember those days.

I won’t dispute your facts, but the reason that UT fans “demand” competitiveness is because the only reason they are not is poor management. It’s not a resource issue. It’s not a tradition issue. It’s not a fan support issue. They have been down simply because they have put the wrong people in place to oversee and lead the processes.

In short, it’s fixable if someone would just fix it.

The fact that any of us are still here after the last 15 years is, in itself, an unassailable testament of the loyalty of this fanbase.

However, I think the program has been so mismanaged that even the most devoted of us will be staying home instead of making the trip to Knoxville for games next season. Who wants to drive multiple hours to watch the team lose by 20+ points? Games aren’t cheap. The economy isn’t great. It’s tough to rationalize investing that much time and energy into something as futile as what this program has produced for over a decade.

Our rivals either pity us or don’t even think about us any more. This is the legacy of Mike Hamilton, Dave Hart, and John Currie. If Phillip Fulmer doesn’t get this fixed, it’ll be his legacy too.

The fans have been here through all of this. It isn’t the fans that are the issue. At some point, the program has to give us a reason to keep hope alive.
