Why does ESPN hate us?

Why do we hate them? More reasons for us to hate them than for them to hate us. They have put the screws on us and we have poked back. We have tried to court them in the face of many a slight and ESPN has never reached out a hand to let it go. So we have poked again...and rightfully so. I hate them and they treat us like a red headed step child.

Edit: Add the trailer trash comment and the Peyton Manning Heisman Trophy fiasco. Basically campaigned against him. They don't respect us.

I know this is an old topic but this is getting old.

Back in the 1990's, during UT's golden era, Vol fans had the perception that Sports Center would quickly brush over UT's big wins, and then spend 10 minutes swooning over the Big 10 or gossiping about Notre Dame. ESPN loved the Big 10 in those days, and seemed to think other conferences were inferior.

ESPN also went out of its way to promote Charles Woodson for the Heisman over Manning in 1997, and ESPN commentators seemed persistently disappointed that the first BCS championship was UT vs. Florida State in 1998.

Keep in mind that many Vol fans who came of age in the 1980's and 1990's had parents and grandparents who would mute the TV during Vol football games and play John Ward's broadcast instead. In that case, ESPN would be the only non-homer media you would hear in those days, and as such, it would sound much more negative.

ESPN didn't hate us before 1979. that's their born on date. They mostly did northeast basketball and got Big East games mid week which is what got them national traction. Not sure when they broadcast their first college football. I suspect the narrative comes from the Peyton/Heisman fiasco.

I feel like every fan base thinks ESPN hates them. People only want to hear things that reinforces their own opinions, even if it's just grasping for straws. ESPN isn't going to talk about how awesome 9-4 UT was this year when they could/should have realistically been 10-2 regular season or even 11-1 if they had one or two less fumbles at A&M.

Nicely stated.

ESPN doesn't hate us, for Christ sakes how many college game days did we have this year? We have all the talent to be a top team and we are mediocre. Don't expect ESPN to gush over a mediocre SEC team.

We don't deserve much love from any media. Top 10 ranked football team given every chance in the world to show we deserved it...and everytime farted it away. They gave up. We lost to A and M then got friggin annihilated against Bama...THEN...So. Carolina.....At that point...injuries or not....they...and everyone else said the heck with us. What are they gonna say "What a great job by the Vols. They were a top 10 team...heavy favorite to win the SEC East and completely blew it. Let's give em their props for grossly underachieving. Team of the year".

I think the fact our entire schedule is either on a major network(CBS) or ESPN or another major cable network, shows a ton of respect.

Tip of the day.

ESPN doesn't hate us. They just don't have a reason to care about us over any other team due to the lack of relevance over the past few decades. Winning programs = Bigger ratings. People either love them or love to hate them so they watch. Once we get their again, then they will learn to love us again. If we ain't helping them with the ratings they don't give two ****s.

If you really think ESPN would cost themselves money by crapping on one of the largest fan bases in the country on purpose you are truly an idiot.

On the other hand if Hurd did not miraculously recover that fumble vs App State, or Jennings did not catch the hail mary, or Va Tech did not gift us 6 fumbles (at least), we would have finished regular season 6-6 or worse. This season was a failure and there is no sugarcoating it - even in games we won we usually did not play well (other than second half vs UF this team never put it all together - offense and defense never played well at the same time and that's what it takes to have really good years).
