Why do we need a federal education department?

Lol, I'm a troll because I don't blame the DoE for Tennessee kids remaining ignorant, when the Tennessee Board of Education, and local school boards control education standards and curriculum in Tennessee?

You take blind partisanship to a whole new level; I'm not going to lie, it's actually quite impressive.
Why do you like big government?

What is the purpose of education? Is it to prepare our young people for work? Prepare them to functioning members of our society? Make everyone a scholar?

That money should stay in the states.
The REAL answer is...."we don't". We built the finest education system in the world. It was available to ALL. The DOE was created in 1979. Just ask if the education system is better now than then. We don't.

Great cut it and cut out sending our tax dollars to DC. What do you not understand about this concept?
And you'll still be short $20-25 billion.

So which state services are you cutting, or which state taxes are you raising?

Guessing all of you "states can do it better" knuckleheads would've also came down on the whole "state's rights" argument that led up to the Civil War?
If things had been "left up to the states" in the 1860's, our country as we know it wouldn't be in existence today.
If things had been "left up to the states" during the 1960's, segregation would still exist in the South.
If the Federal Dept. of Education is wiped out and everything education-related is "left up to the states," then states can treat certain classes of citizens any way they want in the school system, which is what many of you really want.

Cry all you want about the state of education in our country, but at the end of the day our "education" problems aren't rooted in a systemic failure in our educational systems, but rather in our inability as a society to properly address and reduce poverty in this Country.

Now, that being said, I'll sit back and wait for @hog88 to remind me again about how bad of a president Abraham Lincoln was...

I don’t know, I’m sure we could find enough to cut out that would never be missed. You also fail to ignore how much is spent just to comply with the federal purse strings. We’d be better than fine keeping our money in state and spending it as we Tennesseans see fit, you know like how it used to be before the federal government became the behemoth it has become.

How did we ever become the leader of the free world, leader in medical and technology, first country to put a man on the moon without all of these federal programs, departments, agencies created just since the 60s?

Nope, you are 100% wrong. If things were left up to the states the civil war would have never happened, slavery would have died out and segregation would have been minimal and short lived.

If the Federal Dept. of Education is wiped out and everything education-related is "left up to the states," then states can treat certain classes of citizens any way they want in the school system, which is what many of you really want.

This is ignorance personified. For this to happen courts would have to ignore civil rights legislation passed at the federal level.

Enlighten me, how much is the state of Tennessee paying to "comply with the federal purse strings"?

Well for one example, before the EPA was created in 1970 the Cuyahoga River literally caught fire 13 times in previous 100 years, and 40% of US drinking water didn't meet safe standards.

Your "everything government bad" approach is nonsensical at best.

The cleanup of the Cuyahoga river was almost complete prior to the creation of the EPA. Try again.
