Why do UT softball players keep disappearing?

Softball has 12 scholarships, baseball 11.7.

In some cases, it does come down to whose parents can afford to make up the difference. It also means that players that also earn an academic scholarship get in a really tough spot if that runs out or they no longer qualify for it.

There was a UT baseball player a few years ago, a starter as a freshman during the Raleigh era, that had to leave after his first year because his father was injured at work and couldn't afford to pay for the difference between his 66% scholarship and out of state tuition after going on disability. He was able to transfer to a school in his home state after a year in juco where he could afford to pay.

This is good information and interesting to me. I'm curious what the difference is between Alabama and other programs that have higher transfer rates. I looked at their roster for the past 4 seasons and the number of players was 18, 18, 18, and 20, respectively for each of the past four seasons, which seems standard or normal to me. If only 11-13 players are getting on the field, this doesn't seem any different than most programs. (Caveat - I don't follow most programs so I don't really know). It still seems reasonable to me that some of the remainder at Alabama would leave. If they are not, then a lack of PT or a lack of scholarship money is not important to them and I don't understand why that would be.

With all this talk about only 12 scholarships and players without one having to pay their own way -- would it be an NCAA violation say, for a well heeled booster to pick up the tab for someones tuition ? The sport has become too popular to stand pat as it is.

Yes, that's definitely an NCAA violation.

The sport is popular, but not as popular as college baseball and they have fewer scholarships for more players. No chance it changes.

hmm is t here anybody we can complain to ? to at least get the NCAA to at least look at changing it ? I assume that would have to come from ADs and Conference leaders ? which would cost schools more money and they will the say oh no,we are broke ? of course most other conferences out side of the big 5 , will say they can't afford it

with ESPN and the SEC Network , the SEC should be flush with cash in the coming years,if the athletic departments aren't, it will make you wonder where the money is going

I see big raises for the ADs and most likely football coaches and the other sports will not see a major increase at all,of course I have a jaded view :)

surely they could afford some more scholarships for baseball and the softball teams ? but as you said Deerpark there a lot that would vote it down

The total scholarships in college sports is strange to say the least. In women's basketball it is 15 which means you can put 3.0 teams on the court. In softball with 12 only 1.33
College basketball 2.67 or 13 and baseball only 1.30 which makes injuries in those sports tough.
Football has 85 which with two 11 man starting teams relates to 3.86 so not really fair at all the way scholarships are distributed.
I guess it is all based on money.

Tennessee and Alabama can afford it. MTSU, ETSU, UAB and South Alabama cannot. And there are more non-Power Five schools in Division I than Power Five schools.

if they can give an illegal alien kid a full ride scholly, they can damn well afford to give one to softballers. Damn Hart! :)

A couple of years of increased SEC payouts, increased donations and the renegotiation of some debt incurred from the prior administration have helped that a lot.

The Weekleys always seem to recruit very well each season and fill whatever needs are on that particular roster.

A lot of the players are getting money from privately endowed scholarship funds. Does that count toward to the sport scholarship limit or is it separate and thus a way to get aid money to more kids?

Softball players are eligible for academic and good citizen scholarships from what I understand but they have to meet the requirements and everything has to be on the up and up.

About a year and a half ago the AD (department) talked to us about an endowment for athletics. At that time they said the women's basketball team was fully funded and they wanted us to put our endowment towards LV softball. They said that was their next objective, to fully fund the softball team, and that they were very close to reaching that goal. Don't know the current status; we started getting a very uncomfortable feeling about the AD and decided to wait a while before continuing with the endowment. But somewhere, somehow there is supposedly a way to get more money into the program to help support the players.

Donors endow the athletic scholarships that fall under the SEC limit. So when you see that they are receiving the "Insert Donor Name Scholarship" that is one of the 12.

Schools raise this money so that scholarship costs go down, that the don't come out of the budget each year.

They are allowed to use other sources like Hope or Rotary etc. if they qualify I believe.
