Coach Joker Phillips tells a story about when he realized that he should hire former Tennessee QB Tee Martin, who was officially brought on board as WR coach on Tuesday.

Last Oct. 16, Phillips was recruiting at a high school game in Atlanta. "I feel like I'm pretty big in knowing everybody in Atlanta," Phillips said. "Well, when Tee walked in the stadium, it was like every little kid, every coach, every media person knew who Tee Martin was. That moment right there, I thought, 'This is a guy we need to be looking into pretty heavily, and we need to try to attract to our place.'"

Martin's playing and coaching background is with QBs, but he was passing game coordinator at New Mexico last year and has some experience working with receivers. However, it sounds as if recruiting will be his forte, as Kentucky continues to try to lure players from the talent-rich Peachtree State. Martin began his coaching career at Morehouse College in Hotlanta and also coached at two high schools in the area.

He seems like he will be a GREAT recruiter. Maybe hes a future Vol (again)?

Tee Martin Resume vs Baggett Resume

Pretty clear decision if you ask me.

Congrats for Tee, but I am happy with what we have here. Good luck to him. I wonder how he is going to coach his WRs on getting blasted by JJ when they cross the middle.

I could see Tee working his resume up and evenually being a solid UT coach. He will hopefully build some great SEC recruiting connections while at UK, learn to coach in the SEC, and be ready to "come home" in a few years.

Go VOLS!

I have a lot of respect for Tee, he will always hold a special place in my heart for his contributions to UT. That being said, Tee is still largely unproven as a college coach at anything other than QBs. If Tee proves himself at Kentucky, then you approach him if you have an opening, but until he does so there is too much at stake to gamble on a coach simply because he's a UT guy. Granted, Chuck Smith would fall into that category as well, but given his experience as a "consultant" at the NFL level he has experience working with elite athletes. With all the money that is pumped into the football program and the pressure on the coaches to win at elite level universities it isn't worth the gamble sometimes because someone has ties to the University. Take Charlie Weis for example. He was a hot name in the pro game who Notre Dame hired not only for his pro experience but for his ties to the school(attended the school). Being a member of the family doesn't mean success, if Coach Dooley felt Tee could help, he would have gone after him.

Yes this is very true, but the Tee Martin vs Darin Hinshaw question also seems to be a pretty clear decision to me.... Tee, please. Hinshaw is the only hire I'm not very excited about, I hope he tears it up obviously, but Tee Martin would have been a great hire as a QB coach.

Give Tee a couple a years to prove himself, then bring him back home!

Tee basically went from HS to college coaching (New Mexico?) without even serving as a GA. Maybe long on potential, but short on experience. Tee is pretty bright and well known in the Atlanta area--(css)--and should help the Cat's recruiting, but is a reach as a position coach. This is a great opportunity for Tee to learn on the job. Once proven, he may well be a Vol again. Dooley was looking for coaches with a track record that could use their resume as a recruiting tool.

Not really sure what Hinshaw will be doing because Chaney will be working with the QBs from what I have heard.

It is hard to have everyone on your radar. Dooley might have missed on this one, but he knew Hinshaw and feels comfortable with what he brings to the table.

Let's give it time. And if Tee turns into a great coach and top tier recruiter you better believe he would listen to any offer Tennessee made to him.

Hinshaw will be QB.

Chaney will be OC/RBs.

Where have you heard Chaney will get the QBs? Nance said Hinshaw was gonna be his position coach.

If Tee Martin is successful at UK, I can see UT going after him to replace Hinshaw as the QB coach in a couple seasons. Tee would jump at the chance. We can let him gain experience at UK and then pluck him up when he is a little more seasoned.

We want to become a university that is known for developing all of our students/athletes for a career in their field of study! I think Dooley put together a staff that can be in any argument as one of the best in college football!

Baggett's resume beats anybody's resume in college and most in the pros for developing WRs

CLT actually started getting acclaim three years ago when he had two freshman starting and dominating for Alabama and then being named the nation's top recruiter!

Chuck Smith built a great reputation with sports agencies and professional athletes for preparing them for the NFL

Chaney prepared Drew Brees and Kyle Orton to read defenses and master the QB position.

There aren't many universities that have four guys on their staff with the reputation of these coaches to develop players for the NFL. That's why I think Hamilton insisted to all the coaches he interviewed that they keep Chaney and CLT!

why? If you're going to be so definitive please have concrete proof for why you think that way.

You want a quarterbacks coach that can teach the guys to work through a progression of 3-4 reads... I don't think that was Tee's forte.

He was more a 1-2 read and then run style quarterback.

Some keep saying he could be a great coach and yet on the same turn he could also be a not so successful coach. Nobody really knows right now and UT doesn't need to be the testing ground right now.

I really don't think Tee Martin gets the respect and credibility from UT fans that he deserves. I mean, he did do something that peyton couldn't, and i think we all know what that was. You may say it was because of talent, but hey, those teams Peyton played with weren't too shabby to say the least. It's just weird, every time Peyton speaks, many Vol fans drop to their knees and listen as if it's gospel. Hell, i bet if Vol fans were to see Tee walking down the street, he might get a handshake and the line "well hey, there's good ole Tee". Is it just because Peyton has been so successful in the NFL? Is that he was the first over all pick? Dare i say, is it because Tee is black??????? I don't know, but damn, even when he was playing, it didn't seem like he got the respect he deserved.

*please note, this is no bash on peyton manning. and i'm not saying Tee was the better quarterback, but quite honestly, they're equals in my book as far as UT football is concerned. Peyton helped build this program up in the mid to late 90's, but Tee Martin is the one who helped finish it.

I've never seen either one walking down the street and I wouldn't get on my knees for either man being as that is not my thing.

Dunno. He might be a little spurned by that whole getting asked to leave the sideline in Athens thing.

But he is all vol and I would welcome him back if there is an opening and he proves his merits.
