Why did the cops ask Vol fan to sit down last night?

I'm all for getting to stand at games. But you are buying a nonrefundable, revocable license to sit/stand in/at that specific seat when you buy a ticket. Your right to that seats essentially means that nobody else has a right to sit in that seat except you . . . until that right is revoked. Which it can be revoked for any reason at all. Obviously they don't do that unless it is warranted because it's bad for business. But that's how the system works.

I couldn't say but you will piss him off and things will ultimately go bad for you and ruin your game experience.

Actually the guy standing was out of line for not being considerate of others. The cop "breaking stadium rules" probably effectively stopped a situation before it even started and at very little cost. I'd say he effectively did his job.

Really wish Freak would chime in and tell us about the time he had to go to the courthouse and get laughed at by a clerk as he paid a ticket he got after a game for "Excessive Honking".

The ushers in my section stink!! I am at the rail, every time my buddies stop by, the usher runs at record speed to tell them they can't stand there. Even did this when I stopped Shazzon Bradley a couple of games ago. Last night they let the most annoying girls stand and talk about a party they had went to. Let them stand there for the entire 3rd quarter. If I had sharp objects, I would have rammed them in my ears.

Happenned on a public street where police have authority, so it's not really a similar situation.

But maybe we should start calling him Goose. :)

Section Y9 fan here. We had a cop on our side tell someone to sit down as well. He was beyond smashed drunk and was standing screaming at everyone to stand up for penalty flags and everything else haha

That's not the point. The point is, is it a lawful order?

You've thread-jacked something fierce. The original debate is whether individual preferences (standing throughout the game) are more important than other people's preferences (being able to see the field occasionally.)

You've derailed it into a question of whether everyone is required to obey any order by someone in uniform, without first determining whether it's a lawful order.

FWIW, my opinion is no, we're not, although we'd be pretty smart to know the law and be prepared for unpleasant consequences whether the order was lawful or not. I actually believe that it's the duty of citizens to practice civil disobedience when needed to protect their rights and the rights of others.

That being said, siddown people. I can't see, and no, you don't have a right to stand throughout the game. You certainly have the right to make a jackass of yourselves, although I don't know why you insist upon doing so. sheesh

I really thought we had this covered. You will not receive a ticket in this scenario. The police are there at the discretion of Neyland management. They are not there to enforce the law. Many of the police at games are off-duty, working a side gig. They are not there in a legal capacity. They are not going to issue you a citation.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but the real expert on all of this would be GrandVol. He needs to pop up and chime in.

My concerns about drunks like this:

1. They will fall on me (and hurt me.)
2. They will puke on me.
3. They will fall on me (and hurt me), and then puke on me.

There are cops who work for UT. They are called UTPD. They look like normal KPD. Get a ticket from them and you are headed down to the Knoxville municipal court.

Well I sat behind an 80 yo grandma who was a sleeper last night !! Right there in her seat! As long as her snoring didn't bother you guess she would be one you could enjoy sitting behind ....
