Manning was handicapped in college.
The Tennessee coaching staff, as a collective whole, seemed to piss their pants against teams fielding similar talent and just hope and pray Manning's arm would win games instead of sticking to a gameplan.
When the coaching staff quit relying on one player, look what happened.
It's not Manning's fault, but that seems to be where some Tennessee fans get their dislike of Manning.
Also, he got just as much media coverage as Tim Tebow and never won a championship.
I like and respect Peyton, just throwing out some ideas as to why people cringe when they here Peyton being talked about.
I agree completely with the bold text. I thought this while PM was here and the success of the team after he graduated only confirmed my thoughts. Time after time in big games, the staff acted as if the game rested on PM's shoulders and he was our only shot at winning. As you suggested, look at what happened when the staff stopped relying on one player and let the TEAM play the game.
