Why all the Manning hate?

Manning was handicapped in college.

The Tennessee coaching staff, as a collective whole, seemed to piss their pants against teams fielding similar talent and just hope and pray Manning's arm would win games instead of sticking to a gameplan.

When the coaching staff quit relying on one player, look what happened.

It's not Manning's fault, but that seems to be where some Tennessee fans get their dislike of Manning.

Also, he got just as much media coverage as Tim Tebow and never won a championship.

I like and respect Peyton, just throwing out some ideas as to why people cringe when they here Peyton being talked about.

I agree completely with the bold text. I thought this while PM was here and the success of the team after he graduated only confirmed my thoughts. Time after time in big games, the staff acted as if the game rested on PM's shoulders and he was our only shot at winning. As you suggested, look at what happened when the staff stopped relying on one player and let the TEAM play the game.

It's probably not very fair, but I also don't like him because I have heard multiple stories from some people that I trust that he tends to act like an entitled little douchebag

Your sources are way wrong. He isa cool as you would ever imagine. Huge competitor and hates losing and demands a lot from himself and those around him. Everyone who knows him will tell you that nobody outwors him.

I've actually had this argument with fellow Tennessee fans before. I don't hate Peyton Manning but a lot of people have a stick up their butt when you don't cheer for teams fielding former Vols.

If they are successful, great. If not, oh well. They don't play for the NFL team I cheer for. There are tons of Colts fans and a slew of Chiefs fans popping up. Seems like a double standard when people say you need to support the Vols but mostly support Peyton/Berry. There are tons of former Vols representing Tennessee in the NFL.

I hate the Ravens but I think I'll make them my second favorite team to cheer for Mogran Cox. Long snap that pigskin brother!
Damn Pearl, keep posting, brother. That is one of the most attractive women I have ever seen in my 65 years. UTK class of '68. Thank you. GO VOLS!!!

Didn't superior coaching have a little something to do with that?

Peyton is obviously a better QB than any florida has had, he can't win games by himself though. Was it the 97 game where he had a few seconds before the pocket collapsed due to a line that couldn't protect him while the brilliant Chavis refused to put heat on the florida QB?

Sure it did.....doesn't make my post any less true.

Justin, it's easy to spout off at the mouth without anything to back it up. You must have been watching different games than me during Peyton's era. I'd love to hear you tell Chavis, Cutcliff, or Fulmer to their face that they pissed their pants when faced with equal talent during the Peyton Manning era. Love it. :eek:k:

You are so far off base and wrong it is pathetic. Love it. :eek:k:

Back in the 90s, UT usually saved their worst performance for UF, much in the same way UF saved its worst performance when playing at FSU during that same decade.

I guess you could call me a hater. For both his junior and senior seasons, TN came into it with national title hype, and both season's laid an egg in the FL game and virtually ended the run before it even started. My dislike has come from these heartbreaking moments in my fandom. Also losing to Memphis doesn't help.

Who dislikes him?

Heck, half the the board is bandwagon Colt fans.

Count me in because until Peyton Manning was drafted by the Colts I couldn't give a crap what the NFL was doing. It was just football games to watch between UT games. Following Peyton has been the only thing good about the past few football seasons if you want my 2¢

Don't forget, Peyton was part of 3 teams that won alot of games for us and helped recruit better talent by winning ballgames which imo led to a small role for the success of 98-01. More talent was coming to wear the orange. He's not a one man wrecking crew and the defense was the weakness in 97. They always gave up too many points. Can't blame him for the entire losses to Fla. I guess I don't understand why oeople would hate him. Just like fulmer. I don't hate him even though he "couldnt beat "Steve" and he has said some disheatening things on tv after his termination but he was great when Peyton was there and so was UT football.

I don't like him...pretty sure I have a good reason, though.

*Might also want to mention that I just became a Vols fan a few months ago

bandwagon colts and chiefs fan checking in.

THIS! I was there....Spurrier out coached Fulmer's VOLS....almost every season...if you look at the kids that went to the NFL back them between UF and UT we no doubt had better players....but not coaches.

This is the most absurd and stupid thread I've seen since I've joined volnation. What sane Tennessee fan would hate /dislike Peyton Manning in any way? I urge whoever started this to take a look at this website Peyton Manning's College Stats Page

In addition to all of the positive attention he brought with his play during college, he has enjoyed continued success in the pros. He will be a first ballot hall of famer. He is an incredible ambassador to the University and especially the football team. I'm embarrassed that this thread has even been started and if you don't like Peyton Manning and do not appreciate everything he has done for our team and this program, go cheer for someone else.

V,B!

Not to mention...the superior NFL caliber players that came to UT simply because they thought #16 was going to win UT a Nat'l Championship. Manning's name sold alot of super talent to come to Tennessee during that time. It is a shame that he did not get that title while he was here but his presence brought the kids here that won it in 1998.

I never cared about the NFL really since Tennessee didn't have a pro team. When Manning went to the Colts...so did my support. I was at UT when he was....saw almost every home and away game he ever played....we're the same age....so it makes me feel good to say:

Peyton Manning is my HOMEBOY!

Haven't seen any real haters but I posted a thread in the NFL section asking for everyones Top 5 All-Time Favorite NFL QB's and I was amazed how many people didn't pick Peyton on their list. That might be because of the Titans/Colts since he's not in Knoxville anymore?

Stupid argument. It's not like the Colts franchise started off in Indianapolis. Probably half of the professional sports franchises in the US have relocated at one time or another.

Not really a Titans fan. They were in Houston when I lived in TN. Lived in New Orleans for 8 years back in the 80's, so I became a Saints fan. Also a Colts fan just because PM. Last year's Super Bowl was a joy to watch for me. I wanted the Saints to win but I also wanted PM to win. So, did not really care who won.

Not sure how anyone could hate PM and all that he did for the UT and continues to do. He is a true scholar athlete. At the time he made the decision to stay at UT for his senior year, I couldn't believe it. I was elated for UT but hoped he was not making a mistake and fortunately it worked out the best for him. And he brought us home an SEC championship that year. I now have both a son and daughter at UT and their first game at Neyland was when Peyton was QB. We lived in Chicago at the time. When I was transferred to Louisville, we lived in Jeffersonville, IN so we could be legitimate Colts fans and have been since he went there. Now living in Texas and having to contend with the Cowboys and Jerry's world, we still proudly wear the blue for Peyton.

I hated Peyton when he was at UT because it seemed like he would get all the pre-season love from the media, then Danny Wuerffel (and even Doug Johnson) would outshine him head-to-head.

love the line about gettin all the love. like when ESPN went on a mission to get woodson the heisman?

Love Peyton. Dude came down to watch me play intramurals my freshman year, which was his senior year. Ok, he actually came down to watch a friend play on the field next to me. But still, he was a spectator for my mad football skills my true freshman intramurals year (I was too good to redshirt).
