Why all the 5* misses?

What is it gonna take to land some 5 stars other than recievers

Reality,
Well you have on average 30 players rated 5 Star yearly. There are 130 or so D1 schools. So a bunch of D1s will get zero. Then when you factor in some teams get 2+ say Bama , UGA, Ohio State, etc... IMO you've got to get a bunch of 4 stars and some young 17/18 YO 3 stars that have a high ceiling and some growing left. Also in this environment a lot of high recruits will portal since its seamless, so don't burn any bridges, miss on a 5 star wish him best and he might yo-yo back to you. If you get on top and he had a good experience during recruiting and things are not going like he thought at say Bama and/or Saban or HC retires or something of that nature. Arms wide open.

Since there's only 30-32 per year on average, you can't expect to land more than 3-4 at the very most, and that's only if you are in the playoffs consistently.

Give Heup some time. He is crootin pretty well considering UT has had 1 really good season in the last 20 years. If he can keep winning consistently, get UT into the playoffs, and maybe even win the dang thing, they will start landing some of these guys.

One of the reasons, and I know people don't want to hear it, is NIL. We have got to raise more money. We are being outbid and I heard this from someone who would know.

Can you factually backup the fact we did not win a bidding war for lack of funds?

Not having it and establishing a ceiling for a player or position are two different things.

Player worth is one thing, but I SPECULATE that meeting a bid might be a problem in the position room and we pass on increasing our bid on some of our targets.

I bet the collective has sources with funds in reserve for the right players.

Getting 5*'s is very difficult. We got one last year and 1 so far this year. That's more than a lot of top teams. Tennessee as a state does not have the same recruiting base as states like Georgia, Florida and Texas. Just the reality. Continue winning and increasing NIL will help.

We may miss on a few 5 stars but it's not all about the stars. Maybe we need to look around at some of the Dollar General Stores. Rumor has it that there's been some good players found working there?

Proving that our defense knows what it's doing, specifically in the secondary. They've HAVE TO get more consistent series stops, 3 & outs, etc. Until then, we're gonna be viewed as a offense-first school, and the elite corners and other DB's we're missing on won't want to play here for (what I would assume at least) lack of development to get them to the NFL, where other schools thrive on Defense.

LOL, ok...........

There's about 30 "5 stars" per year, per recruiting cycle. Kind of silly if you ask me to expect to fill a class with multiple of them. I mean we got the most important position last year when we landed Nico. This cycle we are getting him a weapon to throw to.

Yeah it'd be nice to get some more Darnell Wrights and Trey Smiths, but there's literally only one 5 star oline players in the 2024 class.

Absolutely. The services generally pick 32 players a year to be a 5star, as there are 32 NFL teams and a 5star player is projected to be a 1st round draft pick in a few years. Sometimes there are less than 32 players in a given class that are ranked as 5stars...like you said, this season there is only 1 consensus 5star Olineman in the class of 2024. Next season there might be 3 or 4 of them (2025)

VOLS lucky to have a 5 * commitment. Count your blessings. Very stiff competition. It's great that we're in the mix for so many 4/5 stars.

Amen. I am super impressed at how Coach Hype and co have done so well in recruiting with such a small track record in the SEC. Nothing short of amazing. If he keeps landing top 10 classes every year, we will make the playoffs nearly every season. Thats ALL you can ask of any coach/team. The future is so bright at UT that most of us smile just thinking about it. The Legions of the Miserable will never be happy. Ever.

I don’t follow recruiting with any detail. Did we miss on someone we expected to get?

They might be talking about the 5* we had the lead for that are now trending elsewhere. Like Franklin. Im sure people are going to say "Plenty of time before signing day" but i will reiterate what i have said previously. The long game has hardly EVER paid out in UT's favor. Now personally idc if we hit or miss on these guys. Recruiting is too fluid to be emotionally invested in.

It wouldn't be VolNation without the handwringing over the silly stuff.
