Who/What's to blame if we don't make NCAA tourney?

First, just when I thought there was no appreciation on this site of good pop culture, along comes HotlantaVol. A lone voice, joining mine in the wilderness, and trying to get people on here to quit listening to "Filter" and their ilk and to appreciate the finer things in life, such as the Dan.

As to hat, well, he feels the way he does. He can listen to his ABBA all he wants, his Maroon 5, his Jay-Z. Whatever floats his boat. I cannot make him see (or hear) what he does not want to, no matter how excellent it might be.

Incidentally, they are playing the New Orleans Jazz Festival the week before showing up here. Yeah, that venerable old hack of a venue, they have no idea what they are doing booking the Dan, do they?

I did get six tix to the HR show on May 12. Working on some other tix as the rumor is that they may show up in Atlanta (Chastain) and Clearwater. Hoping they do Sunfest, as I will then have to take the week off from work.

We are not worthy....
Hey, law, thanks for the support. You remind me of my dear Knoxville friend who <gasp> graduated from UF. He's a fine fellow to be around, except when he talks about UF sports :)

Hat, you're entitled to your musical opinion. To each their own - but we might make you a Dan convert yet.

If the Dan does show up at Chastain this summer, I'll be there. May have to split a table with the buds, so I won't be stuck in the open-seating wilderness with the annoying soccer moms who drink too much wine and chat at 100dB.

Rumor was May 11. Still not on their site, but it apparently popped up on one of the ticket sites for a day before dropping back off again. So, keep an eye out.

Cool, I'll keep my eye on the site.

Hey, do us all a favor over here at the 'Nation and crop Tebow out of that avatar, leaving just the brunette and her two friends :)

Again, I repeat, is there someone else in that photo with her? I'm not seeing it...

If you're ever *really* bored, go listen to some tracks off of Fagen's solo works, particularly "The Nightfly" or his recent release, "Morph the Cat." Fagen's solo work, on a whole, is substantially jazzier than what is released under the Steely Dan name.
If I were ever that bored, my next act would be to blow my brains out.

Jay-Z=Hip, modern, cultural icon who kicks it with Beyonce.
Fagan and Becker=Irrelevant, anachronistic, dinosaurs who drink prune juice with Bea Arthur and Estelle Geddy at the rest home.

Fagen and Becker have been recognized for album of the year in 2000. They also tour with world-class musicians. Here is a sampling, from the bios, of who their horn and rhythm sections have played for or with:

Jim Pugh, horns:
Since settling in New York, Jim has performed on over 4000 (!) recording sessions, including dates with Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Madonna, Joe Williams, Billy Joel, David Sanborn, Pink Floyd, Lou Rawls, Dave Grusin, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra

Keith Carlock, drums:
Grover Washington Jr., David Johansen, The Blues Brothers, Paula Abdul, Heads Up Superband, Rhett Tyler, Harry Belafonte, Diana Ross, Joe Beck, Leni Stern, Rudder, and Oz No

Jon Herrington, guitar:
Boz Scaggs, the Jim Beard group, Bette Midler, The Blue Nile, Phoebe Snow, saxophonist Bill Evans, the contemporary jazz superband Chroma, Lucy Kaplansky, and jazz/blues organ great Jack McDuff, among others. Some of Jon's recording highlights as of this date — aside from every Steely Dan and Becker/Fagen solo disc of the 21st century — are: Jim Beard's four recordings (three of which were co-produced by Jon); Bill Evans; Michael Patches Stewart; Bob Berg; Lucy Kaplansky; Michael Brecker; Randy Brecker; Victor Bailey; Chroma (with Mike Stern and others); and Robert Secret.

Cindy Mizelle, backup vocals:
Cindy's critically acclaimed solo album "Cindy Mizelle" was released in 1994, and she has contributed her vocal talents to over 120 albums by artists such as Freddie Jackson, Carly Simon, Chaka Kahn, Johnathan Butler, George Benson, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Patti Labelle, Celine Dion, Anastacia, and Alicia Keys.
Ms. Mizelle has also toured and recorded with Whitney Houston, Dave Matthews Band, Bruce Springsteen, and on The Rolling Stones' 1990 "Steel Wheels" Tour. She may be best known as having been an outstanding background vocalist for Luther Vandross in the studio and on stage.

etc., etc. In other words, hat, these are fine artists, musicians of the highest caliber. They consider it a privilege to play for and with Fagen and Becker.

Now, march along and go get ready to play in your Friday night kazoo band...

The same idiots who "honored" them with Album of the Year once named Jethro Tull the Best Hard Rock Artist. Gee, they get a bunch of other washed up dinosaurs to go on the road with them to entertain the Polident and Depends crowd. That really changes my opinion. If the artists you list were that talented, they would have their own bands. The fact that a bunch of studio cowboys in need of a paycheck play with Steely Done doesn't really move me.

I'm 29. I better go knock out my real teef and get some dentures, then, so I can better appreciate the Dan.

Quit punching the tar-baby, Hat. You just brought a knife to a gun fight. :)

They do have their own bands. But as artists they recognize the once-in-a-lifetime chance to play with the very best of the best. And if you had bothered to catch any of their shows lately, you'd realize that many a fine young lass is in attendance. Those that follow(ed) around the likes of Phish and Widespread Panic are likely in the crowd at an SD concert.

Now run along and go listen to your Grease soundtrack on 78 rpm...

And while you are at it, make sure to tape up the corners on your Brittney Spears posters.

Yeah, Steely Done has Paula Abdul's old drummer. How dare I call their credibility into question? Steely Done is to modern popular music what Dane Cook is to modern comedy, an annoying niche act that people are sick of hearing about. The critics chose to throw them a bone a few years ago. They've parlayed that into a numerically irrelevant number of new fans. The vast majority of people at their shows now are the same clueless, self important posers who attended their shows in the '70s.

There's a shock. A crossover between the dweebs who follow Widespread Puke and Phoolishness and the geriatrics who follow Steely Done. Birds of a feather.

They are anything but niche, Hat. The music is ubiquitous, played broadly on many different radio stations (rock, jazz, and adult contemporary), used in movie after movie, etc. Hell, they even wrote the title song for the motion picture FM.

Who is the last band you saw in concert? Seriously?

Wayne Chung? Scritti Politti? Steppenwolf?

Hat, do you appreciate good wine? Good scotch? Would you argue that to appreciate such things you need an educated and discriminating palate?

If so, why refer to people that have that discriminating palate as it relates to music as dweebs?

Really good music is timeless. Do you hate George Gershwin just because he wrote songs in the 20s and 30s?
