Which Power 5 programs can rise in appeal by 2018?

apples to oranges:

dooley: 1 bowl win. 1 winning season out of 6 @tenn= 0 winning seasons/0 bowl wins

butch: 5 bowl wins. 8 winning seasons out of 10
@tenn= 3 winning seasons/3 bowl wins

Butch will get at least two more seasons.

Butch is the luckiest man alive being able to follow the worst coach in NCAA history. Being considered (barely) better than Dooley is enough to secure his job for at least 2 more years? Since when is simply having a winning record and going to low level bowl games been the benchmark of success for a traditional top 10 football program?

I don't think he survives what's coming for him next year. Not with a new AD coming in who didn't hire him and certainly would not be faulted by the majority of fans for letting him go if the Vols lose 3 of the first 5 games next year as I suppose will be extremely likely. If he survives the bye week then certainly after the Bama game when UTs record is likely to be 3-4 (and that's making a huge assumption that Butch can beat Muschamp) then the final nail will be driven into the coffin.

I didn't know mediocre bowl wins was the equivalent to success at Tennessee. Butch Jones will never win anything significant here. It's not being negative either, it's being realistic.

He is simply too flawed on gameday and loses too many games that he is supposed to win. He's basically a worse version of Mark Richt.

If you want to continue to reward him for 7-8 win seasons then be my guest. I, on the other hand, want championships back on Rocky Top.

You can make the classic Butch sheep argument, "Do we really want to go back to the Dooley days?" And I will make an even better counter argument, Dooley was never qualified for this job and should've never been hired in the first place. The Dooley era was a small blemish on Tennessee's history.

We are a championship level program and it's time that we started acting like it.

"Barely better than Dooley" I don't know if this is revisionist history, forgetting how bad it was, or just making things up to slam Butch. Here is a stat that shows Butch is "barely" better than Dooley
SEC wins
Dooley 2010-2012: 4
Jones 2016: 4

Dooley had a lot better roster to work with than Butch did. and Butch has still won more.

Dooley is the gift that keeps on giving, He couldn't win while he was here and he's left the next coach nothing to work with.

Give me a break Butch can't be compared to Dolley any longer!!!

There's a chance butch is fired mid season imo. Lose to GA tech and Florida then slip up against Vandy/scar again would be devastating but realistic

Not a snowballs chance in hell.

To much instate talent heading in to NSD next year liking him and way to much buyout money.

If there's an exceptionally poor showing in 2017 like Catbone is describing, what makes you think that the in-state talent is going to want to come to UT?

If CBJ were to be relieved of his position after the 2017 season, UT would owe him $2.5 million/year left on the contract. $7.5 million payed installments over 48-60 months if it's structured anything like Dooley's contract. Plus the costs of his staff depending on how quickly they found jobs or if they were retained by the incoming coach. Those numbers are not insurmountable.
