Consider the past 10 years, for the sake of this thread. Where do you think the rest of the SEC views us in the pecking order of the conference?

If I'm being as completely unbiased as I can allow myself to be, here is roughly where I'd put us.

**I based this list on a combination of 2 things: Conference record (past 10 years), and # of 10-win seasons (past 10 years).** I did my best to take "recency bias" out of the equation.

Alabama
Georgia
LSU
Florida
Auburn
South Carolina
Missouri
Mississippi State
Mississippi
Kentucky
Texas A&M
Arkansas
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

*Tennessee and Vanderbilt are the only 2 teams to not achieve a 10-win season in the past decade.

**Only Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Kentucky have a worse record in the SEC. We have 4 more SEC wins than Vanderbilt, 1 more than Arkansas, and 2 more than Kentucky.

why A&M soooo low?

Arkansas lost 20-consecutive SEC games, that should be worth a handful of minuses (bad losing matters just as much as 10-win seasons).
Kentucky is 3-7 vs. Tennessee in that span.

There are some stats that if I threw them out there, it’s not pretty.

its been 20 years since Tennessee has been in a major bowl. 30 years since its last Sugar Bowl.

Record since 1992 expansion

1. Florida- .737 (165-59-0)
2. Alabama- .720 (160-62-1)
3. Georgia- .657 (146-76-1)
4. LSU- .619 (137-84-1)
5. Auburn- .587 (130-91-2)
6. Tennessee- .570 (126-95-1)
7. Texas A&M- .548 (34-28-0)
8. Missouri- .468 (29-33-0)
9. S. Carolina- .435 (97-126-1)
10. Arkansas- .410 (90-130-2)
11. Miss St.- .392 (87-135-1)
12. Ole Miss- .381 (85-138-0)
13. Kentucky- .290 (65-159-0)
14. Vanderbilt- .197 (44-179-0)

This is about right. This is inclusive of one of the best decades in TN history. We are like a Clemson. We have spurts in history where we’ve been good, but historically we are very middling. At least in the modern age of football.

I can tell how much respect we have lost by the way my friends of other teams treat me. Early in the decline my friends (or adversaries depending on the Saturday in the fall) would call and taunt. Georgia fans were the worst. They would call or text the classics. "Nothing sucks like a big orange!" That kind of stuff. Now they all treat me with sympathy. I feel like the special needs kid who falls at the Special Olympics and everyone is afraid to laugh as it would be cruel. I hate it.

The rest of the SEC, with exception to Vandy, look at the schedule, and write in a big W, on the date they play us.

I completely agree with your reactions and comments. I get the same kind of treatment and like you, it totally sucks.

I think you need to go back even further say to 1970, the current recruiting demographics date back to when black kids started playing football, as wonderful as that was and is, it greatly increased the strength of the recruiting base in the states of our rivals like Georgia and Florida. Prior to that, we were clearly the superior program. These are the overall records for that period (1970-2019), not conference records:

1. Alabama, 453-152-3, .747
2. Georgia, 434-175-7, .710
3. Florida, 417-189-7, .685
4. Auburn, 405-193-7, .675
5. LSU, 402-196-9, .669
6. Tennessee, 397-204-10, .657
7. Texas A&M, 377-226-3, .624
8. Arkansas, 348-243-9, .587
9. South Carolina, 307-275-8, .527
10. Mississippi, 298-281-4, .514
11. Missouri, 293-292-7, .501
12. Mississippi State, 270-312-4, .464
13. Kentucky, 247-329-5, .429
14. Vandy, 191-379-4, .336

So you reordered the top 5 and bottom 8 only to have TN stay at 6? Going back to the 70s didn’t change TN’s ranking, so I don’t really catch your point on this one.

I think you could only plausibly rank us above Kentucky, probably Vandy, and perhaps Arkansas. It's kind of a difficult argument to place us below Kentucky, given they have fewer overall and conference wins over the last 10 years, plus we are 8-3 against them since 2010. Arkansas has one less conference win than us since 2010, 5 less overall wins, plus they had 3 seasons (2013, 2018, 2019) where they didn't win a single SEC game. We "only" did that once. They also play in a much tougher division than we do though, so it's kind of splitting hairs.

We do have slightly better records overall and in SEC play than Vandy does over the last 10 years, but Vandy has also gone 5-5 against us over the last decade and are 5-3 against us over the last 8 years. We have only 4 more conferences wins than Vandy, and only 2 more conference wins than Kentucky.

We have all of the trappings of a big program (large stadium, recognizable brand because of past success, big fanbase, etc.), which might lead some people to rank us higher than results on the field would indicate. We should be ranked certainly no higher than 11th out of the 14 teams.
