...Just trying to get back to the original question....

You must be one of them religilous whackos. All the maters I've been acquainted with were either living or had been living just a while ago. Well except for some mater seeds that I got from the old farmer down the road from my Mom's house. Come to think of it, I think he was a religilous whacko too. He was always ordering God to damn this thing and damn that person all to Hell. Anyway, I don't believe life originally sprang up from my maters or anybody elses.

I'm dyslexic. Spelling errors are part of my life. I think I will leave it and see who trys to take the cheap way out.

Look who is ........NM

I believe that the 7 days of creation are 7 periods of time. (much much much longer than 24hrs each)
I do not like the gap theory. The big bang is not the same as "let there be light". When God said "let there be light" there was already land and sky. "Let there be light" is from an earthly perspective where the atmosphere cleared and allowed light in. Plants and animals were created (intelligent design) again over time. they reproduce after their own kind. Cats mate with cats to produce cats. Cats and Rabbits do not make Cabbits. Natural selection works with in a species.

Hope that helps you understand where I'm coming from.

I think that helps. So I think you're saying that, for instance, God created man pretty much exactly as he is today rather than God made some goo that billions of years later evolved into various and sundry other lifeforms, including man. Izzat about right?

More or less but I don't think Man started as an adult. just like the universe did not get created as an adult.
a large number of Christians believe the universe is 7000 yrs old. That is not what is said in the Bible and It's not what science observes.
This should be a thread all on its own as it's a completely different question.
Good Night my friend.

Wow. I started a firestorm yesterday.

Orangeslice13, I do apologize for getting your thread so far off track.

Life began in the Garden of Eden.
The Bible tells me so.
There you go, mystery solved.

I can't believe this post started such an uproar.
I believe God is the creator but I respect the rights of others to believe otherwise.

That's not at all what was going on. I get frustrated when I try to have this discussion and they throw out the trump card. "Because the Bible says so."

When Gramps threw that out there, maybe it got under my skin a little, because there is nothing you can say to that, and therefore, I believe if you're going to be like that you don't need to come in a thread like this.

I am proud to be able to say that I am a Christian and as a Christian I believe in creation.

Creation has no place in a tread titled "Where did life begin" ?

Nah, it holds true for the majority of Christians that I know. They take the Bible as the only evidence they need of a divine creator. Most of them are not very educated, though.

I do not think anyone can call themselves a Christian if they do not believe in creation, in some form.

I have been able to start 2 businesses from scratch. The first one in 1977, sold it in the 1990's and started the one I am running now. If I remember how to do my 3rd grade arithmetic, that would be 35 years. That's not too bad for an uneducated Bible Thumper. I know several successful small businessmen that are Christians. I assume it is safe to say that "most of them are not very educated". Is is not amazing that uneducated people can survive in business.

Sorry if it came off this way, it can be frustrating discussing with people who are just going to continue to be closed minded no matter what. (Not directed at you, slice)

People that have no rhyme or reason to back up their opinions should just stay on the sidelines.

"Faith" can be a legitimate reason, if you want it to be, but it has no part in this discussion, IMO.

People with "Faith" are closed minded but other aren't?

"Faith" is part of this discussion.
I have faith that God is the creator.
You have faith that someday science will prove God did not create.

don't you mean "opinion"? He has not attacked my faith as I have not attacked his beliefs I was taking up for Gramps, now, I disagree that there is no diference between faith and opinion, but whatever, thick skin is a trait that runs in my family as we are all Christians and game officials

Thank you for your support T-Town.

Why not? There are several theories that are compatible with a God hypothesis.

I don't know if you think I said Christians are not educated or successful, but I was just specifically talking about the ones I'm related to or grew up around.

[Seperate Rant] I don't look down on them for that, I just don't personally like how they're content with what they've been told by their pastor. If they're not interested in pursuing all of the facts, then don't spout off and talk like they're telling the truth, or force their beliefs on others. And I definitely don't approve of some of their Sunday school practices or history revisions (ie, the creationist museum in KY). [/rant]

All I can say is there are crack pot scientists like the ones who altered the global warming data. Both sides have thier share of crazies.
Can you tell how I feel about those guys at the "museum" in Kentucky?

No problem. I guess I took the educated part of your post the wrong way..

I agree with you about some people take everything their pastor tell them as the truth, period. We have a new pastor at our church and it is tough to sit and listen to a few of the things he says that I know is not so. It is astonishing how many "church people" have never read the Bible. Their understanding is what they are taught in Sunday School and the sermon.

I not that familiar with the creationist museum. What little I know is what I have read on a thread here. I am not impressed with what I have read.

All you really need to know is that they have children riding dinosaurs and that's just patently false. ANY paleontologist will tell you that, whether they're creationist or not.

honest question- why do you choose to sit and listen to his sermons?

Good question.

Like I said earlier, he is our new pastor, therefore I haven't listened to many of his sermons. I came home Sunday and told the wife I wasn't going back. I gave it some thought this week and plan on going back a couple of weeks, but if I do not feel comfortable listening his sermons, I will find another church to attend.

I know it is personal conviction, but if I may ask, is it a doctrinal issue?

Personally, I don't conflate creation with the concept commonly known as creationism. I think God created it all, I just think He did it using the tools that science is now discovering. I think evolution occurred, I just think it was guided. Not necessarily at every step, but at least given the nudges necessary to result in me. (I am not even sure the rest of you even exist... buncha pixels!)

Not really. It's a combination of things.
He is a middle aged man but he acts very immature. He has been preaching some politics. I believe all politics should be left at the front door. IMO, politics has no place in church. We use the KJV. In the sermon Sunday, it was the KJV is the only true word of God and those that use other versions would burn in hell. That is beyond stupid.
There's a few other things but that should give you a general idea.

I'm gonna guess.............he doesn't believe in same sex marriages.

No he doesn't believe in same sex marriage.
I am torn of my belief on same sex marriage. i believe marriage is a religious ceremony and the government should get out of the marriage business . i do not think any church should be forced to preform same sex marriages if it is against their beliefs. I also believe it is none of my business what 2 consisting adults do sexually to one another. I also think same sex couples should be granted the same legal rights as a man and woman has.

That would give me pause also.

Did he explain why he feels that way?

No explanation.

i do understand that as individuals we will have some differences in our beliefs.
This, however, is pure ignorance IMO

It's usually not ignorance. It's the desire to support a particular doctrinal position that other versions don't.

When in doubt, always go back to the greek manuscripts. You don't have to be a greek scholar to break out a strongs and a good lexicon and figure out enough to get a good feel for which translation is best for a particular passage.
