What's wrong with Dave Hooker?

Bluechip breakdown can be pretty good linked above...

Pancakes and Bacon also - with Kyler Kerbyson

Dave Hooker has some excellent guests - Ollie Lane, Cooper Mays, Jason Warren, Ron Slay, Fred White, Jimmy Hyams etc. so you can skip through the show on YouTube and hear the guests. Cooper Mays this week talked about getting ready for NFL combine. Some shows are better than others but the podcast guys are genuinely trying to discuss relevant SEC topics.

I have seen some very young guys try to do "sports analyst" podcasts that can be entertaining to see them try to emulate Brent, Austin and the Volquest channel. They may have 25 views of their podcast that day so give them a Like for their effort.
I like how Dave runs the show: to the point and entertaining - even if the takes can be ridiculous. He does a solid job filling in 2 hours of content during dead periods.
I tried to watch Pancakes and Bacon a couple of times. Felt like Bacon thought a lot of himself (maybe it's just his voice) and they would spend forever opening the show about what they did over the weekend. Quickly lost interest.

Hooker is in it for the "Clicks" he writes hack articles about TN sports knowing TN sports fans will click on them and then share them with their "friends" saying "where does this hack get off posting these crap articles."

UT alum Paul Finebaum, who was Sports Editor of the Daily Beacon, used that plan to parlay a job as a hack Bammer radio guy into a $multi-million gig on ESPN.

I can still hear people in Smokey's Palace at the old Student Center asking:
where does this hack get off posting these crap articles?"

Plus ça change ...

Hooker brings good info. Caleb Calhoun is a douche. But a lot of TN fans don’t like him because he is right on a lot of things. Most of VN thinks Elarbee, Pope and Halze need to be replaced. So does Hooker. I like him for the most part. Oh and he talked about the stuff about Nico’s dad wanting more lonely before AP did.
Hooker is an idiot. He always thought he was in the loop on football recruiting and he never got any of his prognostications right. Laughable fool.

I learned from this post that he's still around. Last I heard of him, he had been canned from a third-tier radio station in Chattanooga.
I used to tell a co worker “I can wake up feeling great, money in my pocket, life is good & in 5 minutes with you, I’m feeling sick”.

I feel the same about most of Knoxville media.

Reed Bacon is the drawback of that show. Continuously uses the word "like" to the point of annoyance. The last time I watched the show, I counted 185 inappropriate uses of "like".

Dane Bradshaw was discussing Bob K and his influence on his broadcast career and gave him credit for giving direction to his work. After a practice interview, Bob handed him a slip of paper with the number 14 written on it. Bob explained that he had used the words "you know" that many times. If I know, then the information being presented is already old hat.

Volquest has a fairly good program, brought down with Austin Price's use of "You know" like most people use commas and periods. Totally annoying. Eric Cain is the youngest and most professional of the presenters on VQ.

Off my soapbox. I feel better.

I like YouTube channels that get right to the point. I can't stand long intros (looking at you Talkin' Vawls) or podcasters who start their shows with long preambles. That stuff annoys the **** out of me! Timestamps are always appreciated as well.

I don't disagree with Hooker. I would like to see a QB coach and coordinator of offense who could teach Nico or a Milton how to put some arc in long passes and use tight ends like Golesh (Princeton Fante in the red zone or short yardage). Neither would I mind a db coach who doesn't need a Mc Coy and Carter to be effective nor another Oline coach. I see several expendables on our staff.
You must of not watched all the games, they used Mile Kistleman a lot in the backfield in red zone and. he scored on a full Back run in the red zone same play that Fant ran while he was here.

You would need to listen to the podcast to understand. I didn’t read the article, but he was saying there should be a cap on position coaches. Recruiting is where the money should be invested.
The sky-high salaries for position coaches are hard to believe, even these days. Players with the aptitude for it would do well to struggle through the few years it takes to move up. Those guys are making serious money.

Actually nice to see for once some members of the media actually being critical and not just a propandist for the university. Heupel refused to upgrade his coaching staff in the offseason, after getting embarrassed by Ohio State in the post-season.
It was bad, especially after UT out-recruited OSU with the highest ranked classes, for years. Fahr the coaches!

What?

Ohio state has more bluechip talent on their roster than we do. Both sides of the ball. They have four 5* WRs that will all likely be 1st or 2nd round draft picks. Including THE best WR in college this year, hands down. They have 1st round talent on defense also. They openly brag about having the most expensive roster in the nation...$20 to $22 million depending on the source. We tried our butts off to get their 3rd best WR during the winter NIL window. Third. He would have been our best and WR1 the day he arrived on campus.

We flat got our azzes beat by the National Champs OSU in the playoffs. There is no way to sugarcoat that...they beat the brakes off of everyone else they played as well. To argue that we had more talent than them and simply got outcoached is complete nonsense. Even if our 1st team All SEC RB Sampson had not been hurt on the 1st drive of the game, the buckeyes were more talented than us on BOTH sides of the ball and it wasnt particularly close. Even the best unit on our team...the defensive line...which carried us all season, was inferior to theirs. Their defensive line absolutely dominated our Oline. So much that Nico ran for his life the entire game, was tackles 20 times, and cracked TWO helmets. Our QB. Cracked 2 helmets. Our much heralded Dline didnt get pressure on the OSU QB all game...and the only time they actually DID get pressure on OSUs first possession, they got a stupid facemask penalty on 3rd down when it should have been time to punt.

They beat us badly on both sides of the ball. It was because they had better players than us on both sides of the ball. The best coach in history wasn't winning that game for us when Nico was running from a "prison break" immediately after the snap on every play. No amount of HOF coaching was gonna cover those WRs that were wide open all game, either. Their top3 receivers are ALL 1st round draft picks. Even All SEC McCoy couldn't cover them...much less Gibson or our Safeties. They are NFL starter WRs and we simply could not cover them. The game would have been closer in Neyland...but we still lose if played at home. Thats OK. Nobody else could beat OSU either. We are still rebuilding. Lets see what UT looks like in 2026 after 3 consecutive top 10 recruiting classes. Thats when I think we can win it all. We are too young at WR, Oline, LB, and Safety to win it all in 2025. Especially without McCoy. This is the golden age of UT sports. Enjoy the ride.

Don't know Hooker's usual tone, but the way our OL and WR groups have performed since '22 would have anyone wondering about the folks evaluating, recruiting and coaching those positions. Doubt Hooker makes the kind of money plumbers do BTW.

I've listened to a ton of shows over the last couple of years. They were extremely high on how they (and Nico) would fare, especially last year. I think they have plenty of homer takes in addition to "negavol" takes, which tells me they're trying to be fair. They disagree a lot and change their minds mid debate. Sure, their video clip titles are click bait but they're a 2 hr 5x/wk show lol. They've very active with the chat and are laid back and sometimes goofy. They have on good guests and I like the structure of the show. And even if they have a lot of crazy takes, often the other one is telling the other as much. I like debates and discussions so that's why I'm drawn to the show.

If you think that is bad try watching Booger Bailey(SP?).

I do have concern that Coach Huepel's achille's heel at Tennessee will be his loyalty to his staff, some of which are close personal friends.
Elarbee, Martinez and Halzale have taken turns coaching the team's weakest positional groups since Heupel arrived.
You think Saban or Smart would tolerate such incompetency ?

Well, that is terrible. Though I never had a DUI, I probably deserved one sometime. It is also an indicator that there are underlying problems there. Gave up the booze last year after I thought about all the stupid things I said while under the influence. Good luck to Hooker.
