I agree with the ones already posted... just to add a few..

Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (Willie Nelson)
The Ride (David Allen Coe)
Blues Man (Hank Jr)
Who's going to fill their Shoes (George Jones)
Wayfaring stranger (EmmyLou Harris)
Tennessee Waltz (Patti Page)
Crazy (Patsy Cline)
Go Rest High on that Mountain (Vince Gill)
Jolene (Dolly Parton)
Momma Tried (Merle Haggard)
He’ll have to go (Jim Reeves)
Walbash Cannonball (Boxcar Willie or Roy Acuff)

Anything Marty Robbins, Sons of the Pioneers, Don Williams, Lefty Frizzell.

There are also a number of other songs by Waylon, Willie, Merle Haggard, Hank Jr, Tom T. Hall, John Anderson, Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers that could make the list.

SIAP.
This is a list of the longest running number 1 songs on the Billboard charts. This list surprises me.

I would not pick any of these to be the greatest but they cannot be overlooked.

Can't stand a lot of country, especially the newer stuff, but old school Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, early 90's stuff of most people even is great.

And though some will disagree with my concept of country, since most good songs have been listed already by the Man in Black and Nelson, and even Dolly and Reba, I'm gonna say Uneasy Rider by Charlie Daniels and leave it there.

I'd go with "Pancho and Lefty" from a personal standpoint.

"The Dance" is probably my vote for mainstream.

George Jones: He stopped loving her today

Conway Twitty: Hello Darlin

George Jones: Good year for the Roses
It was better with George Jones and Alan Jackson recording it in 1994.

Dolly Parton: I will always love you.
Whitney Houston put this song in a league of it's own.

How do you pick one?

Songs I'm partial to:

Crazy - written by Willie Nelson, best sung by Patsy Kline

Your Cheatin' Heart - Hank Williams, Sr.

He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones

Truth be told, I could name a hundred songs and still feel like I've forgotten one.

I was having the same issue. How do you narrow it down to just one or two. That is why my post rambled a bit and I added additional considerations.

Name them all. :hi:

Admittedly, I'd never heard some of the songs mentioned in this thread, and I've made one hell of a playlist from most of them.
