What was Ryan thinking?

Holy crap, what a dumb thing to say. He just proved what so many of us think about the GOP's attitudes on race.

Ryan’s ‘inner city’ comments sparking backlash – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Except he isn't talking about race. As my kids say, ghetto is ghetto, regardless of the color of your skin. They see their classmates being raised by single moms with various boyfriends coming and going. For the most part, these boyfriends are always looking for work and have an endless supply of reasons why certain jobs won't suit them. They seem to live off these single moms for as long as they will have them.

But, of course, a white republican won't be able to have this discussion without being called a racist by the left.

It says what has been said on here over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Good, and it needs to be said over and over and over and over till these ****ing libs stop playing the damn race card!

This is the kind of thing that guarantee that the GOP loses the demographics war, and with it, the WH over the long term.

The GOP can say all it wants that it has the best interests of the poor at heart when it wants to cut SNAP, or that its just looking out for law abiding Hispanics when it opposes immigration reform, or that reducing early voting days and throwing up roadblocks to registering is about reducing voter fraud. But in the end, they always slip up and reveal what it is really about.

You are digging your own political grave and you don't have the sense to step back and realize it.

One might suggest the real racism comes from those who hear the words and automatically assign a skin color to them.

Until honest discussions can be had there will be no resolution to poverty.

Privileged? I believe Ryan was raised in a single family home with a mother who worked. Lower middle class upbringing.

He was the son of a lawyer and his grandfather was a powerful prosecutor. If you think that's a lower middle class upbringing then I am severely confused about the characteristics of classes in America. His father died at 16 and I'm sure that left an impression on him to succeed which is an amazing story in itself. However if you don't think that man had a first class ticket/ access to better things in life then I doubt we can agree on anything.

Well, there is the rub. These problems need to be fixed. We cannot afford to continue them as they are or we will ultimately fail as a country. Entitlements are simply breaking the bank. But, you can't explain that to the average Democrat because either they are union or they can't read. And they can't read because the most influential union won't allow the changes necessary to fix public education. Both groups rely on entitlements of one sort or another to exist and we all know that entitlements are the best way to buy votes.

So, the answer is the GOP must pretend to like entitlements long enough to get into power and then commit political suicide by cutting entitlements, reforming immigration and education.

If only they were brave enough to do so.

How are entitlements breaking our country's bank? I simply do not understand this. While I wish we could kick a ton of these low life's off of entitlements forever, the majority are simply doing their best to survive the life that's presented to them.

I don't think entitlements produces many votes because most of the money suckers are too lazy to vote. A party that atleast acknowledges poverty and doesn't blame inner city laziness will of course get the votes of people who come from that background however.

The last elections results say otherwise.

that party you are talking about actually keeps people in their situation to maintain their voting block. They have no interest in raising people up when generational dependence on the system keeps them in power

“tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and the culture of work.”

“So there’s a real culture problem here that has to be dealt with"

The TRUTH hurts.

How many degenerate/entitlement pimps do you see at the voting booth? Less than half of our country votes and I'm not going to buy that argument. The fact that an ethnicity other than Caucasian was up for an election was a justifiable reason for some to vote. I do realize how odd that is for my fellow Caucasians.

I do agree with your statement. Someone is benefitting from mass poverty. Ideology wise in the Democratic Party? I don't see that sentiment from their base. Sure feeding a lazy bum will in time condition that bum and his childern to keep coming back for more. I just think that the whole process is absurd. I believe the answer is under it all but won't be solved by someone that grew up in most of our politican's shoes. Because let's face it, most of them are so far removed from the everyday life of an American it's comical.

No what "guarantees" it is when people like you seek to throw accusations of racism on any commentary about addressing real problems faced by this country. Instead of debating merits of solutions you seek to destroy political opponents with divisive race baiting.

Kudos to you and yours on your pyrrhic victory.

Everytime someone points out a (demonstrably true) fact within the realm of social politics, the issue can never really be dealt with because someone has to cry "racism."

This is why we can't have nice things.

From the article

In Ryan's Wednesday radio interview, he discussed some of the same issues that President Barack Obama brought up late last month at an event at the White House, where he announced "My Brother's Keeper" , a new initiative to help minority young men and boys succeed.

One is a vile, dirty racist and one is the heralded leader of the OPs party.

66% of the budget is entitlement spending.

I disagree that the majority on public support are simply doing their best to survive. I just know too many working poor (who are really doing their best to survive) and their neighbors riding on assistance. Drive down any streets in my small city during the day and you will see plenty of evidence there are a lot who are simply bidding their time until their next check. Now they will tell you they are looking for work and nothing is available, but then when you offer them an actual job the truth comes out. I have two good friends who run jobs programs in town. Both have plenty of opportunities that pay above what you get on welfare. They provide free training, help the person get the right clothing for interviews, the whole deal. One of the programs actually pays the salary for the first 90 days to reduce risk to the employer.

The hardest demographic for them to first place in a job and then have them stay beyond 3 months are young, 18-30 year old men. They are only about 30-40% successful in this group staying employed beyond a year. The next group is single moms with more than 3 kids. Older men and women, younger moms with 1 or 2 kids, tend to make it beyond the first year.

Now you tell me what this means. These young men, in my view, are key to those families escaping poverty. Instead, they continually fall back into it and continue to rely on their girlfriends to support them.

I can't tell you what the percentages break down to. I can only tell you that more often than not, when I meet the parents of my kids classmates, the married men seem to have jobs, the boyfriends always seem to be unemployed. And my count would be around 25% of the ones I've met are married. It is all anecdotal evidence, but that is the trend I see.

As to the voting issue, well you need to educate yourself on that. Spend an election day in downtown Philadelphia if you aren't sure.
