What was learned yesterday?

I learned:
*Jeremy Pruitt has the guts/ballz/craziness (whatever you want to call it) to GO FOR IT! on 4th and Goal EARLY in a Game...THIS is a PLUS!
*Tennessee STILL ran a play with only 10 players on defense, at least once (I think I saw it twice)...THIS is on the Coaching Staff/Support
*Pruitt is gonna ride the JG horse...and it is a TOUGH horse, that just needs some more confidence...but can make some good throws
*EVERYTIME I disagree with you "Homers" expecting "10-2. 8-4, 7-5" or ANYTHING beside my expected 5-7 or MAYBE (if we steal one from someone...which is still possible) 6-6 for a Bowl...I'm MORE RIGHT than the Homers
*Tim Jordan is a BEAST and will complement Chandler (once his ear stop ringing...)
*Defensive line is a WEAK point, despite seeing Paul Bain (all jokes aside...he played well, but if Pruitt has to cycle a walk-on DL throughout a game...Tennessee has DL DEFICIENCIES!
*WR Corps are average to good...just need more time to throw/run routes
*The punter Doyle did a GOOD job under some 1st game stressful situations...has a good leg
*DBs got smoked yesterday on a few occasions...but that Flowers kid is gonna play a LOT and will get MUCH better
*Grier was even better than advertised...and I thought there was TOO MUCH hype about him before the game...but he can place a ball...AND read defenses
*Tennessee has a LONG WAY to go to get back to 8 or 9 wins...and even MORE to EVER get to 10+...but I feel MUCH better about it...than I EVER did with Dooley or Lyle

What did you learn?
From a non-UT fan here is an observation.

You will not face a better QB than Grier, for the remainder of the year but UGA, Bama, and Auburn will have a better all around offense. Your D will be better just by the level of competition coming down, combined with the fact that they will start playing better as a unit.

Your offense is in trouble. With the exception of the three remaining non conference games, and maybe VANDY and UK, every other team that you play will have far superior defenses. Your QB is tough but will not last the season if he keeps getting hit

Fulmer started this mess and has no real AD qualifications other than being available when no one credible would take the job. Why would that solve the problem?
BS! This problem started with the firing of Fulmer, without a good plan in place, in the middle of a season after one that finished with a trip to the SEC championship game. When have we even sniffed a trip to Atlanta since?

Fulmer decimated the roster and was incompetent without Cutcliffe. You are right in one thing, though, Mike Hamilton took the torch from Fulmer at that point to burn it the rest of the way to the ground.

Notice the use of the word "maybe" and the phrase "the jury is still out on that" in my post.

LEARNDED...…..……..The Eers have a pretty good program. It will be interesting if they can keep it together.
LEARNDED...…..……….The Vols are rebuilding for the umpteenth time and we must be patient or consume more adult beverages...….tumblr_oo8skxKfF31vf5c5jo1_1280.jpg

I learned that some of ya’ll need to snap back into reality and realize that it wasn’t going to be an instant fix in year 1.

The crappy thing is that even if we see vast improvement the next couple of weeks on the defense an O line, it will still be looked at through the lens of "Of course they look much better now, they're playing a nobody". This team needs as much confidence as it can get. Beating Florida will be even more crucial, recruiting and team moral-wise, since the beating we saw yesterday. If we want better players in the future, we need to show them that JP can develop them and coach them up. With Butch's players, it may be too little, too late

This coaching staff, while still an improvement over the last, is nothing special on game day or in the x’s and o’s Department. They did not do anything schematically to give the players any advantages. They are not bad. That 17 play drive was just about text book for what we needed to do and the D created a few 3 and outs, but the second half you could see it was a first year staff and they were out classed by WV.

Pruitt and co. need to out recruit everyone b/c the only way they compete with the best is to have better players on the field then the other team.

That being said this is a new staff so maybe they learn as the season goes on but today I just didn’t see anything that made me think we have any coaching “geniuses”.

I agree that what we have now is the result of abysmal mismanagement at an administrative level over at least the past decade.

Number 1, UT cannot even hire a competent president.

Number 2, from Hamilton to Hart to whoever that last guy was who stopped by for a cup of coffee, UT has not hired a competent AD until maybe now. I like Fulmer and hope/believe he can finally right the ship, but the jury is still out on that and, at a minimum, it will take time.

Number 3, from Dooley to Jones UT has not hired a competent HFC. As for Pruitt, see Fulmer above.

You forgot a big one.....Too Many Haslams in the kitchen.

Offensively, I learned the horizontal passing game is alive and well post Butch.

Also learned Jordan is a solid back.

Defensively, I learned that, as a defensive back guru, Pruitt was awful yesterday since he wasnt coaching Alabama or FSU level talent.

Also learned the front 7 doesn't really have any playmakers. Yet WVU can find a nose tackle reject from USC and make him look like an NFL caliber player.

He's our coach. Right? Did I miss something? You guys farh him already?

Then he's OUR guy.... You're assuming that I'm meaning our guy= national championship coach. Please bold the portion of my statement where I said that. I'll hang up and listen.....

I just learned from your posts that some posters on here have a superiority complex and can't handle dissenting opinions.

Actually, I've known this for years LOL

As is usual, this post is slowly devolving into the Fulmer firing versus bunch. Who cares. It's over, he's been gone for a decade. He's back, maybe he'll be better than the previous ADs. Jones, Dooley, Kiffen are all gone. Sadly, it will take time to get the ineffective players from Jones gone. But that date is coming.

What did I learn from this game. Not a lot. Richmond still doesn't get it, and needs to be benched. Give the young guys the reps and get them ready for next year. If DR goes to the NFL and blossoms, I'll be stunned. Kongbo. Didn't learn a thing. I've known all along he's just a body builder posing as a football player. Which is easy to do in Juco. Not so much in big boy football. Our CBs are in terrible shape, knew that when we started freshmen. A deficiency from Jones, will take time to replace. We see why recruiting is focusing so much on the lines and defensive back this year. Skill position players don't mean much when you can't control the line and your defense has no shot when it can't cover receivers. I learned we will get better, the guys are trying, effort is there from those who give it. Those who don't, film reviews this week will expose them to their teammates. I learned half of you are suicidal, ready to jump off the bridge or become Alabama fans. Anyone who thought that the CBJ era could be wiped out and erased with 25 to 30 practices, conditioning and film study. You probably also consider flat Earth possible and think aliens fly all the way across the Galaxy just to stick a finger up your ars. Because it is so very special, of course.

I learned we have some very young dbs and the defense overall didn't make on the field adjustments when needed. Hopefully they can get the players to first diagnose and adjust accordingly.

The D line is not good. We have quality and depth issues.

The linebackers were ok but got beat on some coverage packages and in the run but they were working on some very good wr's and we're not kept clean by the linemen so it's hard for me to gauge exactly where we're at there.

Offense is hard for me to gauge right now. Their db's were only slightly better than ours. I'm not sure that defense is very good. I think we have 6 to 7 defenses that are better on our schedule. This offense needs to get the TE's involved more.

The offensive line was not ready to play. Trey will get better quickly as he gets practices under his belt. The unit overall will need to improve and quickly going into conference play.

I've got some concerns over the transition to "bigger, faster, stronger". We look bigger and stronger but nowhere near faster. It was pretty obvious at multiple points in the game we looked slow.

You forgot a big one.....Too Many Haslams in the kitchen.

Good point. There have been a lot of changes, but one constant. They are as much, and probably more, responsible for Items 1-3 of my post as anybody.

Yet, we go down the same road every time expecting better results. The height of stupidity.

I learned we have a long way to go still. I did think our defense would be better than they were. Same for our O-line.

Are you aware of the signing class that Fulmer had committed before being fired?
Fuller did not have a "signing class" that year. Commitments mean nothing, as you know by now watching our recent coaches make them disappear before signing day.

We got to play the young guys. Too many of the Butch recruits, especially on D, aren't good enough to make a difference for us. Might as well get the young guys some experience and take the lumps that come with it since the ones who've been here aren't going to be much better.
