What record would make you worry?

While I agree with this take, if we lost to South Carolina this year I’d be very disappointed. Beamer doesn’t have as much to work with. We’re by no means loaded but South Carolina does not have as much talent as us.

I would be disappointed too but they did well with transfers and closed the gap some on us. Especially if their Qb plays up to his potential.

6-6 and 3-5 in SEC play would be a cause for concern and a step back. Losing to a Kentucky or South Carolina or both would be very disappointing because let’s be real it’s very likely we lose to Florida, Georgia and Bama so our margin for error is very slim. Pitt is no gimme win either

I agree. It wouldn’t completely shock me if we lose to Kentucky and South Carolina especially if we have some injuries. I mean if Hooker goes down then the season is over.

Nothing about Beamer or Spencer Rattler makes me think he'll be anything more than an absolutely toxic distraction in the locker room just like he was at OU.

South Carolina will take a step back.

LSU, for whoever saw them as a sure loss, is a massive question mark. I could easily see us pulling that one off.

8-4 is my expectation, so I’d be disappointed with anything below. Plus, I think we need to beat Pitt and FL to show progress for the average fan.

I was listening to a guest on Basillio’s podcast yesterday and he said TN has 25 players who can definitely play at this level. TN lacks the depth at RB, LB, DBs, etc. I’m sure others on the roster will come through, but he said UGA, Bama, A&M, Ohio State, Clemson and others are two deep,” meaning their second teamed could start at other schools.

I didn’t think about it last season, but apparently Heup played three wide receivers almost every play Oct- end of season, so Tillman and company were “gassed” in the 4th quarter.
Go Vols!

Yep I would be happy with 8-4 and getting a bowl win to get to 9 wins and finish ranked in the top 20 that would be a very good season. The Pitt and Florida are huge games if they win those two then 9-3 or even 10-2 is def possible.

It depends on who we lose to honestly.

Loses to Bama, UGA, LSU would suck but wouldn't worry me.

If we lose two games to any of Ball State, Pitt, Akron, TN Martin, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Vandy them I'm a little worried.

I think we go anywhere between 8-4 and 10-2.

9-3 or 11-2 with a bowl game win.

For this year, what record would make you worried for the future?

I’m expecting us to be 8-4 at worst, but for me, anything worse than that would have me worried. With this team, there’s no excuse for us to be worse than that.
11-1

What’s funny to me is that most of us believed when Heupel took the job that this program would need a complete rebuild. Then after last season which exceeded many expectations, we are now saying that anything less than 8 wins in Heupel’s second season would be a disappointment.

Appeals to "most of us"?

Some of us understand that regardless of whether it is fair or not... a coach has limited time to prove himself and get recruiting traction. If one guy can't get it done then you may have to have a set up guy and then a second "good" hire to finish the process. A big part of UT's inability to get it turned around is not just that the AD's haven't hired the right individual coach... they haven't hired coaches who could build on the last guy's foundation without a "complete rebuild". Last year showed some signs that Heupel is able to build on what Pruitt left even if it wasn't ideal.

If we end up losing four games, I will say that I am extremely disappointed and was really overly optimistic! WE WILL BEAT ALABAMA OR GEORGIA THIS YEAR!

everybody is afraid to say it, but I will. We've got the best offensive coach in the country! Why do you think Lane went after the OC that Heup had his last two years at UCF? You know why--admit it! I'm smiling!

"Worry" is an interesting term.

It's one of those words that implies life is like an on-off switch. Either you're worried, or you aren't.

But we aren't made that way. We evaluate our circumstances constantly. We identify threats and problems long before they come into being. Feeling a bit of unease about those issues is the source of worry.

So in that sense, we are worried all the time. About practically everything. At least, everything we consider important. Those of us who are parents have been worrying about our kids since before they were born. Sometimes just very low grade, easy to ignore but still there in the background. We worry on and off about our jobs. About our romantic interests. About global warming (or people over-reacting to global warming). About Covid-19 (or people over-reacting to Covid-19). About politics. About our finances. About...well, you get the picture.

The only people who can avoid worry entirely are those with no imagination.

So, for Vols fans, people who care about the Tennessee football program, we're going to worry about our team. All the time. Maybe just in small, almost sub-conscious ways, but it will be there.

I remember in the championship season, worrying greatly toward the end of the Arkansas game. I worried during the Syracuse game. I worried before and during the Florida game. I worried when we played Mississippi State for the SEC crown. And I sure worried at various points when we were playing Florida State out in the desert.

And that was the most dominant Vols team of my lifetime, probably. Worried on and off all season long.

Not in a big way. Not in any debilitating way. Not like an Eeyore. But a bit of concern about how things would go, how we would respond to this challenge or that one.

Long way of saying, I'll probably feel a bit of worry no matter how we do this season. It's not a light switch. It will never turn entirely off.

But I'll worry a lot less if we go 8-4 or better. And probably not much at all if we can get to 9-3.

Go Vols!

I gave you a like as I agree wholeheartedly. Fans worry about every game throughout the season. My buddy is a UGA fan and was worried about Vandy and South Carolina last yr. Such is life in sports.

VFL-82 got me thinking about the 98 season so thought I’d comment from the perspective (@the time) of a 27 yr old in Raleigh, NC. Sorry for the long winded post.

1. Syracuse - I thought the game was over but the ref dropped the flag for PI on the incomplete 4th down play. Throughout the years their coach never conceded that losss, stating it was a bogus call and the game was over and Syracuse won the game.

Tee took over with his feet and TN won with a last second field goal.

2. Auburn -goal line stand by TN Defense was a highlight of the game. I think we had a two score lead but Auburn hung around.

3. Florida- TN dominated defensively but our offense struggled Vs an elite Gator defense. I thought for sure Florida would score the winning TD in overtime, but the rest was history with the missed field goal. The goal posts made their way towards the strip.

4. UGA- I don’t recall the details nor score of the game but we owned GA in the 90’s.

5. Bama- We had a three game winning streak thanks to Manning. Nice win.

6. Arkansas- we played like crap in a rain-soaked game, and I thought it was over after the failed the 4th down conversion. I turned the channel and missed the Stoerner fumble. I went back to the game to hear Rocky Top in the background and Volnation going crazy.

7. Vandy- I was best man in a wedding and didn’t catch the score until hours later. It was Vandy but I was still concerned.

8. MS State/SEC championship game. We got behind so I thought we would lose.
Vols took over in the 4th quarter to win the SEC championship and a trip to Airizona.

That was a crazy weekend as UCLA lost to Miami and Brandon Stewart led A&M to victory over Kansas St.

9. National title game- Florida State walked into the game unexpectedly due to the events above. They had an elite defense and Peter Warrick was a stud WR. Outzen was their third string QB and TN frustrated him all night.
TN had a pick six and Tee connected with Peerless Price for six with a sideline bomb. State had chances but TN defense came through.

10. 1998 was a great season and very unexpected. I thought we’d repeat the following yr and let an opportunity slip away in 2001. I was worried about every game as there was so much on the line.

Most fans worry before and during each game but such is life in the world of sports.

Record means less to me than the product on the field. A bounce of a ball (or a bad call from the refs) can easily mean the difference between a W and an L. 5-7 but fighting hard is better than 7-5 and winning ugly. At least as far as the direction of the program as a whole is concerned.

I would be worried if the team seemed flat, unmotivated, not bought in, stupid penalties from lack of discipline, arguing with eachother, etc.

5-7

6-6 would be a bit of a leftdown...but not reason for CONCERN. Just imagine if Hooker is injured. That's a pass imo.

- 1 in 6 chance we go 6-6 or worse...
- 43% we go 7-5 or worse

so those aren't that crazy

Lol seriosuly. People talking about "concern" when he hasn't even brought in a full class fully of his own yet 😂

2023 will be the first class he could even recruit from day 1.
