"Worry" is an interesting term.
It's one of those words that implies life is like an on-off switch. Either you're worried, or you aren't.
But we aren't made that way. We evaluate our circumstances constantly. We identify threats and problems long before they come into being. Feeling a bit of unease about those issues is the source of worry.
So in that sense, we are worried all the time. About practically everything. At least, everything we consider important. Those of us who are parents have been worrying about our kids since before they were born. Sometimes just very low grade, easy to ignore but still there in the background. We worry on and off about our jobs. About our romantic interests. About global warming (or people over-reacting to global warming). About Covid-19 (or people over-reacting to Covid-19). About politics. About our finances. About...well, you get the picture.
The only people who can avoid worry entirely are those with no imagination.
So, for Vols fans, people who care about the Tennessee football program, we're going to worry about our team. All the time. Maybe just in small, almost sub-conscious ways, but it will be there.
I remember in the championship season, worrying greatly toward the end of the Arkansas game. I worried during the Syracuse game. I worried before and during the Florida game. I worried when we played Mississippi State for the SEC crown. And I sure worried at various points when we were playing Florida State out in the desert.
And that was the most dominant Vols team of my lifetime, probably. Worried on and off all season long.
Not in a big way. Not in any debilitating way. Not like an Eeyore. But a bit of concern about how things would go, how we would respond to this challenge or that one.
Long way of saying, I'll probably feel a bit of worry no matter how we do this season. It's not a light switch. It will never turn entirely off.
But I'll worry a lot less if we go 8-4 or better. And probably not much at all if we can get to 9-3.
Go Vols!
I gave you a like as I agree wholeheartedly. Fans worry about every game throughout the season. My buddy is a UGA fan and was worried about Vandy and South Carolina last yr. Such is life in sports.
VFL-82 got me thinking about the 98 season so thought I’d comment from the perspective (@the time) of a 27 yr old in Raleigh, NC. Sorry for the long winded post.
1. Syracuse - I thought the game was over but the ref dropped the flag for PI on the incomplete 4th down play. Throughout the years their coach never conceded that losss, stating it was a bogus call and the game was over and Syracuse won the game.
Tee took over with his feet and TN won with a last second field goal.
2. Auburn -goal line stand by TN Defense was a highlight of the game. I think we had a two score lead but Auburn hung around.
3. Florida- TN dominated defensively but our offense struggled Vs an elite Gator defense. I thought for sure Florida would score the winning TD in overtime, but the rest was history with the missed field goal. The goal posts made their way towards the strip.
4. UGA- I don’t recall the details nor score of the game but we owned GA in the 90’s.
5. Bama- We had a three game winning streak thanks to Manning. Nice win.
6. Arkansas- we played like crap in a rain-soaked game, and I thought it was over after the failed the 4th down conversion. I turned the channel and missed the Stoerner fumble. I went back to the game to hear Rocky Top in the background and Volnation going crazy.
7. Vandy- I was best man in a wedding and didn’t catch the score until hours later. It was Vandy but I was still concerned.
8. MS State/SEC championship game. We got behind so I thought we would lose.
Vols took over in the 4th quarter to win the SEC championship and a trip to Airizona.
That was a crazy weekend as UCLA lost to Miami and Brandon Stewart led A&M to victory over Kansas St.
9. National title game- Florida State walked into the game unexpectedly due to the events above. They had an elite defense and Peter Warrick was a stud WR. Outzen was their third string QB and TN frustrated him all night.
TN had a pick six and Tee connected with Peerless Price for six with a sideline bomb. State had chances but TN defense came through.
10. 1998 was a great season and very unexpected. I thought we’d repeat the following yr and let an opportunity slip away in 2001. I was worried about every game as there was so much on the line.
Most fans worry before and during each game but such is life in the world of sports.
