What other message boards are saying (Syracuse Edition)

He's not wrong.

NYC is f'n disgusting and 'Cuse is boring. Granted I went to 'Cuse quite a bit because Watertown is a complete barren wasteland.

Granted there are fine parts of NY. I love where I grew up (Saratoga Springs/Clifton Park/Ballston Spa). The Adirondacks are awesome.
NYC is dumpster juice, never need to go back, I went to Saratoga this summer for first time since moving to NY, absolutely love that town, of course betting the races made it even better!

Upstate New York, or really, most of that state that’s not NYC is one of the most beautiful parts of the country IMO. Wife and I went to Watkins Glenn last summer for a week and loved it.
I have been to Watkins Glenn, (not for race)another great small town. Skaneatless is another great area, I was on that lake a couple weeks ago, saw Greg Sankeys house (unreal)

It really is. Unfortunately, the city (you know what I’m saying), ruins the rest of the state.

IF they’d ever let NYC ru(i)n itself, I’d consider moving back.

No, I am the Deputy Commandant at West Point right now. Only been here a year. I was a Brigade Commander down in Texas and then the Chief of Staff for III Corps right before I decided to come up here. This is my last assignment in the Army. It’s been fun.
I know it is a long shot but did you ever know Michael Tunnel?

Yah, as a retired Army dude, I'm with you. I mean, the Air Force are a buncha civilians wearing uniforms anyway (heh, just teasing you), but still you're absolutely right: soldiers, and sailors, and airmen, and coast guardsmen, and even marines are people, too. Ain't nothing wrong with Chad taking a few minutes' break mid-morning to check VN.com and contribute a line or three.

On the other hand, @Chad F , you are a fairly high-ranking officer in a fairly high-visibility job, so be careful who all in upstate New York might get wind of things you say, things like "the garbage I see in New York every day," and, "there's nothing in Syracuse that interests me." Some of the cadets the Commandant and his staff (i.e., you) lead are from Syracuse. Quite a few of them are from New York state. Heh.

Just be cautious. Or some of those visitor socials could get a bit awkward.

Go Vols!

Meh. That was offered only as a defense of our fanbase and of Tennessee specifically. Probably a bit harsh, but oh well. Good advice taken.

A more tempered (and accurate) way of phrasing my thought would be this: All areas have idiotic nonsense that occurs, among the fanbase and outside of it. Playing the “holier than thou” game - like the fools on the Syracuse message board - is just dumb. But we have our days like that here on VolNation too.

I’m calling BS on this as there’s no way a person in that job at West Point has the time in the middle of the day to post on another school’s sports forum. And if you are who you say you are, then get the hell off this forum and do your job - those young soldiers deserve better!
I was on leave last week when I posted that originally. Been training with the cadets all summer and got to take a short break as we start the academic year.

I do regret the tone of my original post as I should have avoided the implication that I have disdain for all of New York - even though the cold winters and cost of living are utterly depressing to me. I have been stationed primarily down south for most of the last 20+ years, so the cold this year was a rough adjustment. Lots of good people here who - thankfully - avoid getting deep into the rabbit-hole of team message boards (myself being guilty of it from time to time). I should take a page out of their book.

Call BS if you want. No concerns.

We have way more talent but we also have youth and inexperience in some key positions. This game could be close early with some self inflicted wounds. Syracuse at the end of the day though has some bottom of the barrel talent when compared to the teams Tennessee faces week in and out.

I love it when folks who's only "knowledge" of your life is "Full Metal Jacket," "American Sniper," or "We Were Soldiers..." try to impose their preconceived notions of what they think your life is onto your lived reality.
"I'd rather you'd just say 'thank you,' and go about your day." LOL

It’s part of the world today with social media enabling our worst tendencies. I am not immune to it myself - as evidenced by my harsh tone in my original post.

I should have taken the edge off of it to start with, although I went back and edited it to be more reflective of what it should have been in the first place (both changes, I dutifully labeled as “EDITs”). As for posting while I’m on leave, I give no apologies. HA!

Live and learn, even when you’re getting old like me. It is so much easier when you are interacting in person. Online discourse becomes disembodied, and one can quickly lose his grounding. I’d like to stop online stuff completely, but I find too much of interest on this message board. Guess I’m stuck!

Just “enabling”? How about extracting, concentrating and injecting into the forearm? 😉

Something about this thread… @walkenvol has always seemed to be centered and positive, imo, as well as @Proud Army Wife. Two of my favorites. But we didn’t agree on this topic. Scroll on by*.

*does not apply to obvious trolls. 🧌 Need to pick up our game vs the igdits.

…”while on leave” cleaned up the sub topic nicely.

Exactly

A lot of people from that part of the country, and in Hollywood claim southerners are closed minded bigots, yet ironically they are the ones who paint all southerners in the same stereotypical way. And most have never spent more than a day in the South
When I graduated from grad school I went to work for the old Internatonal Harvester Co in downtown Chicago. A secretary once asked me "what do you eat for breakfast down there?" (Kid you not). And a guy asked me if I had ever had moonshine - and then asked if I could get him some. When I got him some via my father in law he wanted to know if he had made it. I told him no, my mother in law did. She never let me forget.

😆 That's funny.

I used to have a moonshine connection in Blount County, but he passed away.

But, he got me some once when a British couple at UT asked I I could get any for them. I put it into a Fighting Cock whisky bottle and put a cork in it. They were pleased with it.

My FIL was a forester so he was in the mountains a lot so after that I kept a little stash to use strategically when I ran across that one real smart-ass. Imagine insulting a country boy to then be gifted a water glass of shine to enjoy. It was fun to watch.

Bruh, I lived in Syracuse for 8 years. Outside of Syracuse proper, I would put their hicks and rednecks up against any state. There is a whole culture up there built around snowmobiles, kind of like down here it's four wheelers and mud. Furthermore, even growing up in the South, I had never experienced the the amount of open racism against blacks than I did in those years in Syracuse. Easily the most racist area I have ever lived. I am not black, but it made me uncomfortable very often.

I live in a different part of upstate NY and there really is a racist culture here beyond what I saw in Tennessee. Some folks I knew when they were in town let down their guard when they thought it was "only us whites" and "we can drop the pretend niceness". Some folks don't realize you're not joking when you treat people like people.

Aside from that I've really enjoyed it up here, really reminds me of Knoxville but with more walkability, which is really my style. And better food, aside from the lack of acceptable donuts. Some southern folks brought BBQ up here and the locals love it enough they always run out of food before close.

And there's a great colony of Vols fans up here because of engineering jobs. Looking forward to seeing some other Vols at the Syracuse basketball game in December.

I do miss the food there.

I know several New York state residents who have moved to Tennessee. This is a popular spot for them to immigrate to. They all agree though: if New York state could just remove NYC, then they would move back in a heartbeat. Nothing against Tennessee either, but Upstate is just as beautiful if you can stand the winters.
