What other message boards are saying (Syracuse Edition)

More personal attacks and pre-game excuses/ref blaming than I expected. Most of the fans I've come across in online comment sections are pretty level headed. This type if rhetoric makes me even more confident.

If he had bragged on his team as much as he trash talked their opponent and
fans, it might have been a decent post.
You just can’t get the obnoxious YANKEE out of some folks.

There is one thing that scares me about Syracuse, they are loaded at almost every position with Seniors and experience still matters.
albeit some of their seniors are 1st year transfers and that will help. I think I read somewhere that their offensive line is one man returning and 4 first year transfers.

-Tennessee fans feel entitled to excellence and think it's obscene if they're not perennially top 10. They melt down when they're mediocre (oh boo hoo us) or try to hire a meathead a former Rutgers coach (well they did get that one right).

-Just another SEC school w/big ambitions, an oversized stadium and idolatrous zealots all over that burnt Orange Rocky Top.

-Tennessee as a team does not scare me the same as Clemson or Notre Dame. I think we play them close. Likely get down early but claw back.

-The problem I see is getting a fair shake down in Atlanta. We've already seen the disrespect that can happen when ACC teams (especially ones from NY) travel down to SEC country.

-I'm hoping that Fran Brown has already changed that dynamic. He's made it clear we are not some punching bag and is very smart with his words when it comes to officiating. Personally I can't stomach any ghost flags on critical plays in the 4th quarter which tends to happen.

-We have two quarterbacks and at least one highly-rated receiver with something to prove. If we can burn someone on a fly pattern in the first series, I can see us winning this game.

-Tennessee is deep on DL but with Pearce Jr moving on their pass rush takes a hit. Their WR room was leaned out a bit with Squirrel White transferring, Bru McCoy retiring as well as Thornton leaving. Nico leaving in exchange for Aguilar is a downgrade IMHO as Aguilar is turnover prone and has struggled in camp throwing INTs.

-Avoid mistakes, and Cuse will have it a 4Q game. The thing is, very very hard to do that with first start QB and game number 1 on the road.

-I don't have that much faith in our defense, to be honest. I think we are going to have to score in the 30s to win, and maybe to even cover.

-Buncha hicks in Knoxville. I took an official visit there as they were recruiting me hard to play golf there. I’ve never heard the word “Yankee” so many times in my life. Cool school and campus sure, but they are kinda like WV people. Very very very strange.

-I'll sign up for 5 TOs! The deranged Vols fan might think those are 5 mistakes. But I'll feel pretty good about our defense if they force UT into 5 killer mistakes.

-If it's treated as a normal cross conference game, the visiting team's conference would supply the refs. See the screwjob in '98.
If we avoid more than a turnover or two, we win. If we get 3 or more turnovers, we win big. Run the ball a lot early. Avoid bubble screens early, they'll be looking for them.

This is why Dodd refused to continue playing Bama:

So, cheating-a$$ Bama.

This is GOLD from Furman Bisher:

“What the remedy is, how a return to sane behavior is to be brought about, I can’t say. Football must be played hard, and players must be trained into good condition. But the players who have achieved this superior condition must acquit themselves on the field as sportsmen rather than bully boys. Otherwise football will surely be called to face a general public indictment. Reformation should originate with the coaches themselves. If it does not, and soon, it must surely come from the offices of the college presidents who recognize the true value of collegiate athletics and their proper place in campus life. In the revolution that developed after the season of 1905, Dr. Charles W. Eliot, president of Harvard, made this observation: “Death and injuries are not the strongest argument against football. That cheating and brutality are profitable is the main evil.” That statement is still applicable fifty-seven years later.” - Furman Bisher, 1962

$100 this never happened

I’m surprised Syracuse even has a message board. They can’t have that big of a fanbase right?

Fan Base Size

Syracuse’s football fan base is significant but not among the elite in college football. A 2022 study by Tony Altimore, cited by Sports Illustrated, estimated Syracuse’s fan base at approximately 3.45 million, ranking it 14th among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams and first in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), even ahead of powerhouses like Clemson, Florida State, and Miami. This is notable given Syracuse’s recent on-field struggles, suggesting a loyal following despite inconsistent performance. However, this number is dwarfed by top-tier programs like Ohio State, Michigan, and Alabama, which boast fan bases in the range of 7-10 million or more, driven by larger alumni networks, consistent success, and national appeal.

For comparison:

  • Ohio State: Often cited as having the largest fan base, with estimates exceeding 10 million, fueled by a massive alumni base (over 500,000) and consistent national relevance.
  • Michigan: Close to Ohio State, with around 790,000 living alumni and high attendance (over 112,000 per game), making it a top contender.
  • Alabama: Known for its fervent “Crimson Tide” following, estimated at 7-8 million, with strong national presence due to recent dominance.
  • Notre Dame: Benefits from a national fan base, with around 4-5 million fans, driven by its independent status and historic TV deal with NBC.
  • ACC Peers: Schools like Clemson (2-3 million) and Florida State (similar range) have passionate but smaller fan bases than Syracuse, partly due to regional constraints or recent performance dips.

Syracuse’s ranking as the largest in the ACC is surprising given its basketball-first reputation, but it reflects a strong regional following in New York and pockets of support elsewhere, like Nevada and Maine.

I got to play for Chick in the late seventies. He was our offensive coordinator in Oak Ridge. Great dude.

albeit some of their seniors are 1st year transfers and that will help. I think I read somewhere that their offensive line is one man returning and 4 first year transfers.
That should sound familiar to UT fans.

We barely beat a Pitt team in 22 (our best team of the last quarter century) that ended up not being very good without Kenny Pickett.
What did the Pitt game in 2022 tell us? We are good enough to will ourselves to victory, but not good enough to cruise against a decent defense. We still have to outplay them to win. Pitt outplayed us but we still won.
I think Syracuse is better than 2022 Pitt, but so are we on defense.

Ooof. Bad game to have when chemistry isnt built yet. Our defensive line will be licking their chops against this O-Line. Might look like OU vs TN in 2024.

No, I am the Deputy Commandant at West Point right now. Only been here a year. I was a Brigade Commander down in Texas and then the Chief of Staff for III Corps right before I decided to come up here. This is my last assignment in the Army. It’s been fun.
I’m calling BS on this as there’s no way a person in that job at West Point has the time in the middle of the day to post on another school’s sports forum. And if you are who you say you are, then get the hell off this forum and do your job - those young soldiers deserve better!
