What MUST Butch Do in 2016...

What mark must Butch meet?

I've seen posts related to this topic over and over, so I'm wondering what VN thinks the minimum requirements/expectations are this year for Butch and Co. In my opinion, if we go 8-4 or worse (regardless of who we lose to), Butch Jones is not the guy to take us to the top (looking at you, Richt).

Beat Florida hands down. If we lose to them again the fan base and season may spiral out of control. WE have to clear that hump if we want to be a relevant football team this year.

I think 10 wins with a healthy team. But factors like injuries could potentially make things dificult

If we did not have the losing streak against Florida, he'd be safe.

But we do, and the last three of those losses were games where he made questionable decisions.

So, he needs to clean it up and get it done this year for everyone's sake.

1. Reach the SEC championship game.

2. Beat Florida.

3. Be at least 10-2 heading into Atlanta.

Do all 3 and he stays off the hot seat.

I don't think any one of the 3 is enough. For example, if he backdoors his way into the SEC championship game at 9-3 with a loss to Florida again, fans will be mad and he'll be on the hot seat in 2017.

Bingo.

I think Alabama will be a loss, for more than anything because they'll be at the end of that brutal 4 week stretch. But every other game is winnable and should be won. There could also be a loss to UGA or TAMU but I will not be remotely surpised if we go to the Bama game undefeated.

Couldn't vote twice but I believe Florida is a must win and at minimum 10 wins.

This team has the talent to go 12-0. They could easily be 11-1. But like you said, 10-2 is the floor.

We seriously only play 4 real games. Florida, Georgia, A&M, and Alabama. We're more talented than 3 of the 4.

We should at least split those games 2-2.

I don't think that's asking too much.

Unless there is just an absolute meltdown and the team quits on Butch or something seriously happens off the field...Butch is safe. UT can't afford a coaching change at this point.

He may find himself on a "fan hot seat" next year for falling short somewhere in 2016....but he won't sniff a true hotseat from a University/AD/Booster hotseat short of an off the field scandal next year.

WIN.Believe it, achieve it. Viewed the poll , beating fla and bama IS very important for many reasons. If we continue losing games to them we will continue to lose to 'em on the recruiting trail . bammer has beaten fla out for in state players like d henry and c ridley. It really matters WHO you lose too.

I don't think he is any danger of being fired next year unless a major catastrophe/scandal happens but his approval rating will definitely take a huge hit if he doesn't beat FL and with our schedule this year no excuse not to win 10 games.

Agree with D4H. We have the talent go 12-0 or 11-1 but you know there's going to be a couple weeks where we have some guys banged up.

1st and foremost is try and reduce significant injuries during preseason and have a little luck with injuries during the season........ injuries to one or two key players could derail the entire season

The Vols have had more than their fair share of injuries as of late.

Last but not least, Butch must learn to manage the game better because he didn't look like a seasoned coach at times last year and he knows it.

If Butch can win the east with the cards stacked for him this year, he will never win it. The frightening thing is that he wouldn't lose his job over failing to do so.

It wouldn't hurt if the ball bounced Tennessee's way, more often than not.........a little luck is always welcome and necessary for everything to come together, remember 1998

If we stay healthy we probably at least go 11-1 but this is the SEC these guys take a lot of punishment

I say 10-2 and win the east is where the bar is set.
However, I could see him keeping his job at 9-3 or possibly even 8-4...but the seat next year would be VERY hot if they go 8-4.

I feel a lot of folks are looking past the TAandM game...that one could cause us to stumble because Chavis knows how to defend the run well, which would mean Dobbs would HAVE to step up in the passing game...big question mark there.

FWIW - If we do get to the SECCG, Bama / Saban historically does not do well against teams he plays two times in one year.

He needs to (1) Meet expectations (2) Win all games that are close

They have to find a way to score quickly when we are behind because Dobbs can't throw the deep ball. He can only throw short and intermediate passes. Short and intermediate passes will not get the ball down the field quickly enough.
