Self discipline, natural athletic ability, starting at a young age, good coaching when he was little?

What makes him so much better than other college football players?

It's the intangibles, mixed with the athletic ability.

he's fast, smart and tackles well.

Yeah, but a lot of players have those skills. What makes him so much better IYO?
not a lot have it in the quantities he has it, period.

His instincts are apparently good, but the other makes him great.

Hes a gifted player, but some, not all, of his INTs this year looked to be right place, right time type ints. Perhaps it was his football smarts that put him in said spot? Probably.

First off, he knows the game, but what makes him truly special is, he has no fear, no fear of another player and no fear of failure.

I'm not sure if Berry is a smart player or just a natural "instinctive" type player. Either way he has a nose for the ball and seems to end up at the right place at the right time. Some would call it luck, IMO opinion no one single player gets that lucky. It has to be instinct, smarts or some combination of the two.

He has that innate ability to just know where to be, like Bates had, but with the added bonus of being a MUCH better pure athlete. His coverage skills are good (and will improve) but he already knows how to hit far beyond his size. The guy just brings it.

I watch the guy play and think of Bob Sanders of the Colts. In the off chance you don't know who that is ask somebody that does how big a difference maker that guy is for the Colt's defense.

Berry's instincts are incredible. The guy gets his hands on more footballs than any college defender I've seen in a long time. Plays develop more quickly for Berry than they do for most players -- his reaction time is hard to describe, but it's rare.

He craves contact - one of the most physical DBs you'll find defending against the run.

And, obviously, he has stand-out speed and athleticism.

those kind of wheels are very rare at safety, especially in a guy that tackles so well.

Berry is obviously a very gifted athlete. Talent is God given and you can't teach what he has obviously. With that being said he plays with a "reckless abandon" and is NOT afraid to make a mistake. He reacts very well and does not think about what he is doing, this just seems to come natural. He's a great player.

This is who I think about as well. With Monte's defense next year, Sanders may be the ideal role model for Berry.

Knowledge of the game, speed, versitility, very strong and physical for his size. He also loves and appriciates the game and intensity of the SEC. It doesnt hurt to be a god given talent and the determination to be the best!

EB is cerebral. But what makes him a great player is that he is doing something that all players are taught when they are 7 years old. "RUN to the BALL!" That always puts him in position to make plays.

I think EB is more like Ed Reed in the way that he's a ball hawk. He always ends up with the ball and going the other way.

Eric Berry is a pure football player...He not only as the athletic ability, but he has the smarts to go with it...He's savy...If he doesnt win the Thorpe award this year, they ought to do away with awards period...

BTW, what is the difference between him and Charles Woodson? Berry for Heisman baby!
