What Kiffin said... RE: passing game

you mean he doesn't read our board every day?
I doubt it, if you had some free time, would you rather be looking at VolNation or looking at Layla Kiffin?

I agree, 100%. What do we have to lose? Our offense is predicated around the run. Even down by 2 scores, there isn't enough confidence to throw the ball down the field. That being the case, I'm sure Stephens can hand off as well as Crompton. Let's see if he can avoid freezing up or staring down receivers when he passes

What do you have to lose? Nothing.

What does the Staff have to lose? A great deal.

Who should be making the decision?

actually it was a double move and teague splited a tad and the ball was in the air before he came out of his hitch. Crompton did however throw it to flat, needed a bit of air under it.!

I don't see too many people on here claiming Stephens is the answer, I see a whole lot of people wanting to see Stephens get the opportunity to see if he may be the answer.

is bad this year, there's no doubt about it, so I don't delude myself into thinking that our passing game would be a lot better with NS. But I absolutely think NS would be an upgrade at QB.

Here's where Kiffin is screwing up, IMO: I do not think for a second that NS would be worse than Crompton--that's almost impossible. Let's say, worst case, NS plays and our passing game is roughly the same. Even then, why not play the guy who'll be back next year and who has the potential to get better with experience?

As is, Kiffin is pretty much on a path to playing a true freshman next year--and that probably means another half-assed year at best. We know what Crompton brings, and we pretty much know that a true freshman will struggle. Why not play NS and give yourself two QB options next year, sted of one? That's why Kiffin is making no sense to me.

Everybody just assumes that Kiffin going to bring in a big bunch of AA's every year--but guess what, top prospects generally like to know they're going to play for a winner. We've got some good recruiters, but losing games for two years will not help the cause.

Alaska vol......

Yes Crompton has done all that you have said but every QB does. But he taking a lot of heat for mistakes that are not always his. Our receivers have made as many or more mistakes than him and makes it look as if he was wrong. I can list plenty if you like. I listened to a guy cuss and scream all night saturday when crompton threw it into the dirt at the feet of a receiver because he was covered. do you want him to force it and get picked or take the incomplete?

I saw him throw it away because the receiver broke off the route and ran the wrong way and most of the idots in the crowd do nto know enough about football to realize that he was just avoiding a sack.

Yes he makes mistakes, he is not good under pressure, but he is getting no help. I have played and coached ball long enough to realize that crompton is not going to take over many games and win them but i also know that if he had a competent cast around him he is good enough to not lose games. We just don't have it this year.

He is 22 years old and bleeds orange. Kiffin knows who gives us the best chance to win, keep the faith. try to encourage Crompton instead of Griping about everything. Because if you talked about my son the way most people are about Crompton you better hope a cop is around!

It has been stated around here before and I kinda think the sentiment has merit: by sticking with Crompton, Kiffin has shown that he will stand by his word and support a QB even when he is struggling. The point is the message Kiffin is sending to recruiting prospects about coming to UT and getting a shot at the big time. He might have an eye on landing some truly prime prospects next year or the year after and taking UT back to elite status then. If that is his goal, then this is kind of a throw-away year. Nobody expects him to win a NC this year, but he can use it as a time to show HS prospects that if he says he will get behind them from the get-go, he means it. This could be extremely valuable in the future, but it won't do much to make us happy this season. If he is thinking long-term in this way, hats off to him...though I don't harbor any illusions that little old me has any real insight into his grand strategy.

You should try using the

Oh my God, when can we read something on these boards other than being a Crompton bashing thread. Please, we all know he is not good, so let's get over it and talk about something else.......please!

Will some of the armchair QB's and receivers answer this question for me? Why is it, with only a few exceptions (pass dropped by BB and pass overthrown to Teague), that for the most part our receivers are never that open? Is it the routes they run, the play calling, the receivers aren't pushing off, or Crompton never finds the open receiver?

Please treat this as a serious question and not another opportunity to blame Crompton, unless you truly believe that is the case. With the exception of a couple of routes, even our completed passes are to receivers who take a hit shortly after making the catch. However, OH was able to produce wide open pass routes against our secondary... and in other collegiate games receivers on other teams are catching passes with the nearest defender 10 yards away. Again, with only a few exceptions, our receivers don't seem to be getting that open.

Our receivers couldn't get open last year either. The last time we had receivers consistently opena and making big plays was 2007 with Meachem, Smith and the other WR can't remember his name. We haven't had a legit SEC top level receiver since Meachem. Looks like that's about to change with this recruiting class.

Dude, you need to reevaluate your priorities and/or get a life. Seeing a college kid walking onto a sport's field REALLY has that much effect on your life?

I take it you're older than 22 or 23? Someone your age should really have a better grasp on what's really important in this life, and should understand that this is just a game, played by people you don't know, and you'll still be living, breathing, and functioning come Sunday.

That is all...

You obviously don't understand what a "figure of speech" means. A metaphor, something exaggerated to make a point.

Yes I physically die inside every time he takes a snap... EL OH EL.

This has gotten so stale. Crompton is not a good SEC QB, plain and simple. But you posters who refuse to recognize the other factors that have led to our poor passing game are just getting ridiculous. The problem is not Crompton's fault 90% of the time. His WR's and TE's are running wrong routes, then running the route too short or deep when they do run the right one, and dropping passes. Its just like everything else in life people are so lazy they want one person to blame for an entire circumstance of problems. You are the same idiots that blame all the problems of the United States on one man, the President. Wake up, use your brains honest analytical abilities, and quit sounding like ridiculous juviniles. And, deep breath....rant over.

It is what it is...enjoy the season and enjoy the fact that Fulmer is not clapping on the side-line and enjoy the monster recruiting class this staff is putting together and enjoy the Hardesty is running this year and enjoy the fact that we'll have Brown for at least two more. The season is very short...enjoy it!!!

by sticking with Crompton, Kiffin has shown that he will stand by his word and support a QB even when he is struggling.

It also shows he's ok with mediocrity at the position.

Would any other player be safe from being pulled if they played as mad as JC has? No. There's a motive...

You really think Lane is satisfied with Crompton's play?

Stephen's QB rating was worse than Crompton's QB rating... last season by itself.

Under a completely different offense, right? Not to mention he was carrying the UT fan bases hopes of a salvaged season, and his coaches future on his shoulders. Crompton got a fresh start with healthy players both physically and mentally.

What's the comparison of their ratings this year under a new offense?? OH, WE DON'T KNOW......

i can't believe this is still a topic of discussion. folks, kiffin is the coach, he told us what he's going to do, stand by crompton. yes, crompton is not good. true, our receivers are not the best. that's what we have (not to be confused with "it is what it is"). let the man coach, we win by 11 ohio (reminder, we won the game) and the nay sayers chime in. two words for all volunteer fans, "GO VOLS"!!!!! -nuff said

truth! :worship:

Kiffin better watch out with his defense of this clown... I think we all know Kiffin's goal is to show recruits, "Look we're a QB away from a great season, come to UT!!" And that's exactly why he's not playing Nick, if Nick looks good, it might scare off a Scroggins because these QB's want to come in and start, not sit on the bench behind Stephens.

IMO, Stephens should transfer. I don't think CLK has been upfront with him at all.... How could it have been a "tough" decision to start JC over NS if when JC has shown he's inept and CLK still won't give NS a shot?
:lolabove:
Kiffin is starting Crompton bc he is scared Nick Stephens will scare off recruits is just about the funniest thing I have ever read.

How small does a recruits stones have to be to compete with Nick Stephens for a position.

Yes, because things worked out so well in 2005 when Fulmer started yanking QBs in and out based on who had screwed up the most recently, right? The only thing worse than terrible QB play is terrible QB play plus a team-dividing QB controversy.

I love how half the guys who happily sat through a decade of coaching incompetence are already taking shots at the new guy four weeks in.

For God's sake man. Crompton leading the offense turned the ball over in FOUR CONSECUTIVE trips on the field against UCLA. Leaving Crompton in cost us that game, plain and simple. How many more games will CLK lose to stubbornly leave Crompton in?

Crompton must have some nekkid pics of Layla or something. Crompton should have had the headset on after the first play of the second half.

As for the Fulmer comment, I was as big a critic of his coaching as anyone - I just left out the classless name calling that is so popular on here. Despite his faults I supported him as the coach of UT, just like I do Kiffin. I'll defend Kiffin as the coach of UT just as hard as I'll criticize his coaching decision to keep Crompton in the UCLA game.

If Stephens was better than Crompton he would be out there, but apparently he's not which is sad.
