What is your LEAST favorite tradition...and why?

Why are fans of a college that is seated in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee complaining about Rocky Top being a "hillbilly" song? No ****!

The lyrics of “Rocky Top” reinforce every stereotype or cliché that Northerners erroneously cling to with respect to Tennessee. On the other hand, it is no exaggeration to state that the Maxims are the Ten Commandments of Tennessee football.

But that's what's so great about it! Make 'em think that there's more to us than Jed and Granny Clampett. Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top / Reckon they never will. There's a definite aura of menace there.

I sang Rocky Top to my co-workers in San Francisco. (Upon request.) They edged slightly away. So I'll give you that.

The Pride plays Rocky Top, (number is TBD on whether or not the team wins) and then proceeds to play the Waltz. Every game. And I think the Alma Mater at halftime is great because everybody else plays it in pregame.

Regarding Rocky Top, I know it isn't the official fight song, but by definition it is the best in the country. No other fight song pumps up the fans and pisses off the opponents more than Rocky Top. Plus, it is a state song.

I'm aware of the waltz being played, but everyone is already gone at that point......what I'm in favor of is a move toward having a large part of the crowd stay put long enough to join in singing.......it could be teh waltz, or anything....just a signature sort of fan interaction at the conclusion

Rocky Top, particularly the "woo" and when our dumb fans are singing it as we are on offense and at the line of scrimmage. The wave while we're on offense is pretty bad too.

Playing the opponent's song is another tradition I dislike.

That would require people staying until the end, of course. Unless we were able to come up with some sort of football version of the seventh inning stretch.

I...can't say I like Rocky Top too much. At least not when it's played 400,024,243,253 times per game, that is.

What exactly is being reinforced? That we like our home? That our women are feisty? That you don't mess with a hillbilly's alcohol? Hell, all that's true.

I agree, the Maxims are the foundation of UT football.

The cheerleaders coming out on the field before the game and leading the "ORANGE......WHITE" and "GIMME A V" cheers. So dumb. Fo real.

With the proper enthusiasm from the male cheerleader and participation by the crowd, this could be awesome. As it is performed, however, it is pathetic and embarrassing. This 'tradition' should be terminated immediately!

Please stop trying to manufacture or copy traditions that don't really exist and stick with the real ones inherent to our school.

I'm just over 30 but no where near 50 and I have a proposition. We'll work on keeping uniforms unchanged Et al, and you work on getting the AARP crowd to raise some hell.
I've heard some screaming in K&W cause one of them had dead batteries in their hearing aid so I know they have it in them.

Until recently, the coaches shaking hands after the game. Now they even cover this on NFLRZ, just in case another "event" occurs.

It's been a staple played once or twice a game. It was never played as often in the 70s as it is now. Not even close either. In 1972, you may have heard it ONCE OR TWICE.

I don't give dam if opposing fans hate it. I hate it too and wish the frequency of it being played would decrease substantially

I wish they'd play it the ENTIRE game

EASILY the cheeleaders coming out before the pride starts the pregame and doing that awful pep rally. not sure if that's been mentioned or not. just terrible

im gonna have to agree with the wave. its stupid and isnt cheering at all. i dont understand it.

if there are any wave supporters out there, can someone explain it to me

In my experience, the wave begins because of boredom. Depends on when it began. Hopefully not before the third because then I would be wrong. To me it says, "we are more interested in seeing how far this thing will go rather than how far the game is going."

I am going to go with the number of times "Rocky Top" is played. I think I counted some 14 times during the Georgia game. I like the song, I just think playing it relentlessly through the game gives it and the crowd a dull edge. The clapping really stings after a while as well.

1.) Smokey as our mascot. This one has always bugged the hell out me. We are the VOLUNTEERS and I think the "Davy Crockett" image is way more fitting. I think Smokey is great as a secondary figure and would be a nice companion to the pioneer but definitely should not be our primary masoct.

2.) Rocky Top. Once a game, sure. However our fight song is "Down the Field" and I wish our band would play that after every touchdown or big play instead.
