What is wrong with Estrella?

Estrella needs to show the effort every night. The talent is obvious, but he doesn't go 100% like I'm sure Barnes wants, and his defense has really regressed. He doesn't move his feet and fouls with his body/hips at least twice a game. Then looks at the bench like "what'd I do?".

Injuries have been his downfall, but he showed real promise early on. Maybe he can catch a break with some good fortune and better/more consistent effort and turn the corner for good.

The inside scoop seems to be that he is playing the game to protect himself over making defensive plays and vulnerable rebounds etc. He has trouble going up in the air and being exposed, and as you noted, would rather body flop up high than getting his feet in place to rebound or defend. The guy obviously doesn’t lack agility. Hes going to have to get tough if he wants to contribute. As any of us who played know, you get hurt a lot less often when you play with abandon. Cautious play usually leads to more time on the ground. It’s hard to look at him now and remember how well he played Edey and used his lower body against a much bigger guy.

Poor Felix has great coordination when catching alley oops for the most part but his hands for the rest of the game are below average. Still seems to get rushed as he has little offensive skill. It is what it is and not about coaching or his work. Some people just have naturally good hands and feel, others don’t and nothing can change it, especially when a person doesn’t use his hands and hand eye coordination until a few years ago when he got too tall for soccer.

He was perfect for the make up of last year's team, but had struggled with the adjustment to this one. I think Estrella pairing with him will help with his confidence, and less of Gillespie and Bishop trying to create a lob when unnecessary. Noticed that both of them were less inclined to do so when they had a clear shot in the lane this past game

I’ve been big on prognosticating Estrella exceeding expectations, last year and this year. I’ve been wrong, but I think it’s a matter of “when” not if he’ll fulfill his promise. Injuries can obviously wreck that, but we’ll see. Each Summer is been the most talked about player. This year, they were cautious easing him out of the foot surgery. He did well early, given the light practice and contact. Almost immediately he had the knee injury and flu back to back and missed ten plus practices over a month. He has the full package to open up our offensive options: He can rebound and defend, has some good offensive footwork and a hook and turnaround. He passes well inside out, and inside. He can shoot the three, and play the pass by high post in the Fulkerson role. I think this team can overcome its guard inadequacies if we can open up more space for the bigs and Ament. The big lineup we played against Bama was unstoppable when they had to guard Ament beyond ten feet out. More flow will come if JP can pass from the high post, and score and pass low. I think there are some bad matchups for us (Florida) but many other good ones if we exploit other teams size. Estrella can be a great contributor. He just needs floor time.
And there a few times against a team with solid bigs that it might be prudent to adjust in-game to a lineup with Ament at the 4

I hated that look with Phillips, but agree with you that using Ament to draw their bigs out of the lane might be the best way to open up some space against teams like Florida. He has a much better handle and nose for the basket than Julian did.

He’s tried to improve on some things but just doesn’t have it down low. Ball comes off his fingers or even wrist weird and not smooth.
I think at times he’s tried to be something he’s not instead of just hit the boards and protect the paint. Feeding him in the post is a last option unfortunately.

That all might be true, but we don't scare the EE last year without him. His rim protection and limited skill set was perfect for our experienced perimeter

No doubt. IMO his help D and cleaning up has not been as good as last year. There’s been times he’s there and just watched more
No, until recently it hasn't been remotely as good as last year. It takes time for players playing together for the first time a little while to gel. The chemistry takes time to develop. It's easy to tell they are being coached up in practice

…focused huffort.
I tried. Still awkward.

I see you trying to avoid the term “reckless” and i get that. Definitely a term to avoid with protégés. Not sure there’s a better way to describe a zoned in max effort, which should be the target.

Basketball > ballet but damn they have plenty in common.

Late bloomer. Reminds me somewhat of Clint Capela.
