6 national titles? Where in the heck did you get that from?

20 interesting facts about Tennessee football
6 national titles? Where in the heck did you get that from?
Everybody remembers, nobody needs reminding. It's why Jones was given a lot of patience and no expectations of winning anything his first two years. Year 3 Jones actually had us ahead of schedule and it was generally acknowledged......however, he got criticism for losing a couple or 3 games because of poor in game management.
Still, he wasn't drilled by most for not winning an SECeast last year, that was there for the taking, because it was widely thought that 2016 was "THE YEAR", when everything should've set up for him as heavy favorites to play Alabama in the SECCG.....and it was absolutely set up on a tee.....until 2 inexcusable losses to lowly SCar and Vandy.
So don't get it twisted. He has gotten a ton of attaboys and thank yous for cleaning up a mess, job well done. Now, after 4 years, he's getting deserved and earned criticism for a job poorly done after a failed, disappointing season.
I get on here and on the facebook group and it seems like half the fanbase has forgotten what UT football is all about. These are the people who say you are embarrassing if you say anything critical about Jones or the team. I've also seen them rationalize the lack of results with "The SEC is tough" and "Most teams would be happy with an 9-4 record". Have we been in the wilderness so long that people have forgotten that UT is one of the greatest football programs of all time? UT football has won 6 national titles and is at or near the top in a number of categories lncluding bowl appearances and victories and we are only 2nd to Alabama in SEC championships. What's my point? A 9-4 season with losses to Vandy and USCjr would have been seen as very mediocre a decade ago. So why is it ok now? Why are people irrationally defending it? In my opinion, it's a cause for concern. Do we really want to become content with just being mediocre?
I have a few thoughts:
1) The internet has made everything an argument. 25% are sensible one way, 25% sensible the other way, and the last 50% are just crazy, loud idiots in every direction.
2) Something tells me you're not hearing the other side if you're using terms like "irrational". I doubt there were too many vehemently defending Butch &co this year, with the losses to Bama (by that much), SC, and Vandy. They were probably saying, let's not fire him just yet.
3) You have very high standards for this program. That's good. But there are people out there that can be happy with a 9-win season without the amount of disappointment you yourself and surely others obviously endure. Don't hold it against them.
4) I'm probably what you'd consider the "they" and "them" in 2 and 3 respectively.
It is pretty damn ridiculous how some people on here are hoping for our head coach's failure this next year. Yeah, how great that would be to set our program back 3-4 years. If National Championships are y'all's only idea of success then we've been mediocre since '99. 3 straight bowl wins is pretty damn good if you ask me.

I'm definitely not "happy" with 9 wins this year. I just knew we were gonna make a run for the playoffs. I think injuries built up and the whole deal with Hurd etc.. No doubt the SC and Candy games sucked. I just get frustrated with people on here pretty much rooting for Butch's failure this next year. He clearly cares about this program. We must have been mediocre too between 51 and 98. I remember the wilderness of Battle when Johnny had to rebuild. He would have been fired before success in today's world. I don't see people happy with 9 wins. I see people happy with being out of the ditch and back on the road.we want to win but you have to get in the right direction first. I think the fire Jones crowd are the same ones saying Barnes can't coach.
Lack of pride allows me to admit your comment was formatted more for you the "writer" than me the "reader", and I don't get it.
Of coarse, I could have been prideful and thought I comprehend it correctly and called you delusional, not a true fan or Nancy.
Or, maybe I really am stupid.![]()
Calling the man Names, poor mouthing his every move, and hoping for losses so the man will be fired is not well deserved criticism.
Also, you went from thinking they were ahead of schedule last year to firing the head coach this year. wow.

I think what's embarrassing is that the fanbase is critical of Jones's offensive system, yet ignores that it was the highest scoring offense ever. Also, that Tennessee is much better off then before Jones came to coach. The vanderbilt and south carolina losses were bad and being the head coach, he shoulders the blame, but to want him gone is crazy. Does the fanbase want him gone because he can't win the SEC or national championship? That won't happen unless he can challenge alabama in recruiting, and that doesn't seem possible at this point.
