Here's how I see it. Depth is great, crucial. But if you have a huge talent gap drop off in your secondary after about you 7th guy, You probably arent going to play more than 7 whether you have 10 or 15 guys in the backfield. Live to recruit another year and dont tie up all your scholarships.
Your right about (hopefully) not having to play more than seven guys. That gives you a nickel and two backups. But the reason you carry more is so that, ideally, you have 6-7 upperclassmen and 6-7 lowerclassmen. So you arent putting freshmen out there to be eaten up in the sec. Plus you have to remember how many dont pan out, or get dismissed. I think we've had a couple dismissed in the last two years alone and jj walked a thin line. While you can play well with 7 players ready to go most seasons, it takes 12-14 scholarship players to come up with those 7 usually.
