It was my understanding that some of the coaches were to visit Tino Thomas. Do we have any current information regarding his status to us or Southern Miss ?

Brent Hubbs just said on Sports Talk that Tino could not explain why he went to Southern Miss. Baggett went to Memphis and got things straightened out with him.

If he isnt it it will be on his own accord. Hubbs said he did not tell the coaches about taking a visit to Southern Miss.

It is very tough to get Memphis players to go to UT. If he is any good,we need to try aand ment fences in not only Memphis Tenn but all of West Tenn. We do play football in West Tenn. Don't get me wrong if we can replace him with a much better player , the coaches know best.

Sorry about the typo. Should say we need to mend fences. We have a lot of talent in West Tenn that never gets a look. Just because a player is in single A or double A does not mean he is not good. I have seen many players from West Tenn end up playing pro ball in Canada just because they would not be given a chance. Example: Ronald Hopkins; Murray State University/Calgary Stampeders: Tony Champion/I believe he was from Humbolt had a career in Canada. There are some others.

I'm thinking that Tino is as good as any of the DB commits. For all we know, he might prove to be the best of the group. Even if he doesn't feel like he's on the bubble, which he might considering the talk on this board, who can blame the guy for taking a visit and speaking well about his hosts? What's wrong with that? Also, howdy to Reelfoot Vol, from another Reelfoot Laker.

As a gradiate of Southern Miss, I know there's quite the pipeline of Alabama scraps that came our way over the years. I also know that there's some fences that still need mending in West Tennessee. As I figured, this wasn't a push-out but a push-back.

Even if Moore commits (which I'm hearing is still possible), I think the staff want Thomas on the team, and that's why they went over there with the cavalry. A guarantee of a shot at starting and a plan to get him on the field can smooth this over.

Its not like we are either deep or talented in the secondary.

The way I would do it if I were an SEC head coach would be to have at least 12-13 Div. 1 players on the roster in fall camp. Right now I'm thinking TN has about 6. If Moore is somehow swayed, he'll be one of the corners with Lanier being the other. That'll leave time for players to develop, shirts to be redded, and guesses to be seconded.

People need to stop forgetting about Teague, Gordon, and Waggner.

Teauge got to practice at corner for 2-3 months before being thrown in the lion's den, and he did an admirable job. He is one of our best athletes and gets to learn the position for another offseason after playing a full year. Also, Gordon is a very physical and athletic corner. He was a Redshirt Fr., of course he is going to struggle. And then you have Prentiss who did a great job going against Alshon and pretty much shutting him down. Prentiss came in and looked great at corner IMO.

Theoretically with a 85 man roster you should be able to carry 3-4 players for every position on the field. That means 12-14 dbs/safeties. And your right, tenn's roster is way below that. Of course we only have three classes on campus right now, but we are low even taking that in consideration. You know its bad when the coaches wont even put a nickel package on the field. That happened this year more than once.

The six I was counting were JJ (obvi), Waggner, Brewer, Gorden, Flemming, and Teague. Honestly, Teague has been a Godsend for two strait years. And I'm not saying he's out of the mix this year, it's just that there will be a refreshing level of competition at every position this year.

Coleman being an early enrollee makes me think he'll be the last true freshman to get significant playing time for a while.

Here's how I see it. Depth is great, crucial. But if you have a huge talent gap drop off in your secondary after about you 7th guy, You probably arent going to play more than 7 whether you have 10 or 15 guys in the backfield. Live to recruit another year and dont tie up all your scholarships.
