What is the real issue with JG?

Is it him starting the game or the coach keeping him in when he goes off the rails? I can see starting him but when he is not performing well, why are we keeping him in the game? If he is not getting it done, you have to pull him. No question about that.
JG should have played badmitten instead of football! He is a loser!

Pruitt is about to get himself FIRED sticking with JG. If all the new QBs are that bad that they can't beat out JG a proven loser, bottom tier QB by any measure, then Pruitt has done a terrible job getting them ready.

I am done with him, he will be fired in a few years and Tennessee will still be locking to dig its way out of the cellar. You get what you pay for, you hire an inexperienced DC with no head coaching experience on the CHEAP and this is what you get.

Top SEC coaches go for $8 to $9 million a year, not $3.8.

Pruitt is a much of the problem, he is just too old school, defensives win games mentality. Scoring 50 plus points is what wins games today and he just does not get it.

He thinks a good linebacker or a defensive back is more valuable than a TOP QB.

This year is a waste, start training the other QB by giving them games experience. What difference does it make if we beat Arkansas with JG, who cares, we will never, ever beat Alabama, Florida, Georgia again with JG. Our only hope is to develop the team for the future and that means investing in a QB that at least has 4 years to play. I am sick of stating the obvious, Pruitt sucks big time.

Pruitt has been quite clear this whole time but people just dont listen. JG is the best QB we have. Pruitt and his staff have done an abominable job of recruiting and developing QBs and that has led to this point. WE HAVE NO QB WORTH A DAMN. I dont care how many stars HB has. Clearly he isnt that good or he's be starting. Same with BM and Shrout.

As soon as people get comfortable with the face that UT has been a miserable failure at getting a QB, the faster we can move on from Pruitt.

People can say all they want that Pruitt isnt giving these guys a chance to take the job from JG. I dont believe it. I think they all suck and Pruitt goes to bed every night knowing this fact. With the new red shirt rules and everyone getting an extra year of eligibility theres no reason for Pruitt to hold back on a young QB unless that young QB just isn't that good.
What I find more alarming is the people that still believe that crap even though we’ve all seen the truth with our own eyes. BM was better in the SPRING GAME last year. It was no different when he took the reins in the season. Yes he needs to get better with his decision making which will come with time but if you just remember the difference in the teams production once BM got in there, you’ll KNOW that the perception of “JG is the best we have” is complete BS.

He plays like he's on Xanax most of the time. He never mentally developed past his freshman year. It sucks because he all all the physical tools to be special. He's in his fifth year now and why Pruitt is still holding out hope is beyond me. Makes zero sense
slower than molasses....I think he is slower than Worley.

Its mental, when he played in his high school all star game he was supposed to be the starter. He wound up being number three into the game I dont think he can process in real time whats happening during a play, how many times have you seen him make a big play after going thru his progression. Typically he never gets thru his second read and a lot of times he locks on to is initial target. This makes Pruitts decision to ride with him more frustrating, if you have an all world defense you can play conservative but we are far from this on defense.

The legion of misery is making this board almost unbearable. Pruitt talks all the time about getting more explosive plays on offense and scoring TDs in the red zone, so I don’t get the vibe he’s content with 20 points a game. Kinda hard to do either of those things anyways when we have such a weakness at the primary offensive position. Right now we essentially need all the other 10 guys to execute perfect each play for the offense to work. JG is just not the type of player to make something out of nothing. Plus he has zero ability to pull the ball on reads and run. Chaney offenses typically don’t have a problem scoring points so I’m not willing to throw him under the bus just yet. When he had Bray at QB during the Dooley years a lot of points were being scored. We just flat out don’t have a Bray type QB on the roster that’s ready. Everyone is clamoring for Bailey to be the guy, but he’s essentially only practiced at the college level a few weeks due to the quarantine stuff. All we can really do is speculate, but maybe due to the lack of practice the transition to the college game is taking longer than expected with him. Maybe he hasn’t been putting in the extra work on his own to get up to speed. I have personally written off Maurer and Shrout. If they can’t take the job from JG at this point they never will. Bailey and Salter (if he stays committed) are our only hopes for the future. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but the offense is gonna be a problem the rest of the year due to the inconsistency at QB. Just strap in and hope for the best.

I think @DiderotsGhost post regarding JG from a few weeks ago was pretty accurate.

I definitely think JG just doesn't have great in-game instincts. As a pure pocket passer, he's excellent. He's highly accurate and can throw the deep ball with precision. That's part of the reason why he always looks like the best QB in practice and looks great at camps. Case in point, even during that Georgia game, he made 2 spectacular TD throws to Josh Palmer that a lot of SEC QBs could not make.

But when defenses throw things at him that he doesn't expect, he's very slow to react. It's not even that he "panics"; he just doesn't adapt, and makes slow decisions. JG's the rare QB who turns the ball over via inaction (taking too long to decide anything) rather than action (forcing a pass that he shouldn't).

He's almost the opposite of Josh Dobbs in that sense. Dobbs struggled with passing accuracy / precision at times, but often made up for it, by having such superb field vision and great instincts for the game.

I'm not really one of the people on this board who just likes to trash JG. Frankly, he's still been the best QB we've had on the roster that past few years. But I think his lack of instincts for the game have created a hard ceiling for him. You can be the best passer in the world, but if you can't adapt quickly to new information, you'll never be an elite QB. And that's ultimately what's so frustrating about him. He's fundamentally one of the best QBs in the SEC, but has some of the worst in-game instincts.

At this point, I really want to see more of Maurer or Bailey, because even if they don't pass as precisely during practice, I think both of them have very good football instincts. They'll get better with the fundamentals and playbook over time, hopefully. But I think this is "the ceiling" for JG. The parts of the game he still struggles with are the parts that can't really be taught.

I think JG just don't have what it takes to move forward...... plain and simple. Whether Coach Pruit should take him out of the game or not is another question.

Then there is the issue of why is he not any better than last year and why is our backups not ready to start or ready to take over at any point? IMO our QB coach does not have what it takes to teach these young men. He may have great knowledge but some people just don't know how to translate that knowledge over to their students. And I think that is the other problem.

I really wish he'd quit doing this crap when there's a hint of success. Smh.....Great you threw a TD......Hi-five your teammates and head back to the sideline and figure out how we can do it again.....

It’s simple really, I think we overcomplicate it.

JG can’t throw guys open, he doesn’t anticipate the route well. Think back to the 2018 when we played Mizzou at home. JG was getting murdered waiting for routes to develop to find an open man. We all blamed the terrible O-line play, then the O-line suddenly played miraculously better when Chryst came in. The truth is, nothing changed, Chryst just took the snap and threw to the route without wasting time.

I remember specifically on Chryst’s first drive he took the snap and immediately floated one over the DB to Jennings. He threw it too long and Jennings missed it, but he ran the exact same play the next snap, took the ball and floated it to the route Jennings was running before pressure ever had time to get to him, and got a huge gain. That’s what JG can’t seem to do, especially on short routes.

Fast forward this to the 34:45 mark and you’ll see the two plays I’m talking about.

nice analysis, JG just can't get it done

Or just enjoy the limited time available to play a game. It's supposed to be fun

I thought this was going to be locations that might be suitable in Knoxville for JG street. I was going to suggest the Avenue off main where all the crackheads congregate. We could call it JG alley. Has a nice flow to it

Same here. I was wondering if there's a long street with a lot of run down/collapsing buildings that dead ends into the river somewhere in Knoxville.

More concerned with the "real" issue with why Pruitt plays him. My days of bashing JG are over with.

My current theory involves pictures on JG's phone, a bathroom stall, Pruitt, and Nick Saban.
Interesting your mind goes to that scenario first..... 🤔

I remember standing in the stadium at gametime
Trying to get my hopes up
There was this 5th year qb who they wont sit down
I hate to watch him do his stuff
Through the long losing nights he makes plays to get us beat
He makes 1 good play in a thousand and shoots his arrow at our feet
Down on JG street
In the ball game, he holds it and he drops it
when the defense puts him on his back
When he throws a pick six for the second time
Our team justs lets them run on by
Unlike all the other qbs, he looks lost on 3rd down and its incomplete
As he makes his way to the sidelines after another 3 and out
Down on JG Street
And sometimes even now, when were feeling lonely and beat
Jeremy says we've closed the gap and war daddies have been added to the sheet
Down on JG Street
Down on JG Street

Spring game means nothing. and Pruitt would play the best QB he has. BM did nothing last year in games to make me think he's head and shoulders better than JG. I maintain until proven otherwise that Tennessee doesnt have a QB on the roster that can compete with the best QBs in the SEC, or even mid-tier SEC QBs. If BM comes in and throws for 400 yards and 4 TDs at some point then we can revisit this.

Ok I have very critical of JG like most every other Vol fan. But it's time to take the blame off him and put it on the people that are putting him on the field. Head coach the OC and last but not least the QB coach. Which in my opinion should be looking for a new job by seasons end. Oh Btw hey Fulmer time to rattle the cage of the football program. Like most life long fans am growing damn tried of the product being put on the field year after year ! Tennessee fans deserve better.
