What is the problem with our fans?

A bunch of old people at the games don't like to make noise, don't like people to stand up to make noise, etc. They like to sit the entire game like they are watching a chess match instead of a football game.

Which, in my humble opinion, is another reason why the games are quiter, the fanbase is aging slightly. Old people hate to cheer. Everytime I go to a game, the old farts behind us always tell us to sit down and be quite. It is an SEC football game, the words "sit down" and "be quite" do not exist.

Also agree about the older fans telling you to sit down. I get really intense (always clean/no foul language) but I literally CANNOT physically sit down and watch UT football. I have kinda gotten tired of being told to sit down so I admittedly don't go to as many games as I used to. I know that sounds horrible but I can enjoy the actual game much more at home these days. The games that I do go to, i try to wander down to the student section where I fit in a little better even though i'm 30. At home, I'm on my feet pacing back and forth 3 feet away from the TV the entire game. I can't sit and I can't eat until the game is over. I may have a problem though but I know I'm not alone.

As I was able to attend four homes games this past season one obvious thing occured to me our fans suck. We have the largest stadium in the SEC but everyone knows we are not the lowdest or by far the most hostile environment to play in. One thing was apparent while I was watching us play the UT fans would sit down and clap like its a tennis match. I never sit down during a UT game and the next day I am unable to speak on account of me raisin hell on the opposition. If you go to Gainesville or Death Valley you cannot hear yourself think but at Tennessee I feel like Im at a nursing home.

You obviously weren't at the UGA game this year.

This topic has been rehashed 1,000x's already, but since I'm bored...

Its not your job as a fan to be the lone obnoxious pr**k standing and yelling in your section. If the game isn't going well, chances are the crowd's not going to be happy, and likely somewhat subdued.

Unfortunately, there's been a lot of unhappy crowds at Neyland over the last...well......6-10 years?!? MF'er, has it really been that friggin long??
So naturally Neyland has lot a decible or two on occasion, losses to Wyoming and Vandy and near losses to N. Illinois will cause widespread apathy over a period of time.

Winning cures all. If CDD can pull out a surprise W or two next year, Neyland will get its swagger back. Hell, before * left, some of it was returning.

The UGA game was the loudest, most electric crowd I've seen in Neyland in a LONG LONG time. Moreso than Cal '06 b/c it was an SEC rival. If we can do that to UF or Bama this year....lookout.

Blood are you trying to make friends with people here? I think another glaring reason that i forgot to mention above is:
THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!
Don't get me wrong, i do love the championship game. But I remember a few years ago all we had to do was beat KY to get in. Not in 2008 but in 2006? Or whatever year. The game was at Neyland. Hardly anybody showed. The weather wasn't the best, but it was football weather. The crowd that was there was boring.
I really think this was a tell tale of what is to come when we ultimately have a playoff system which when enough people whine about, will come. I am adamantly opposed to a playoff, for the record.
When UT had a virtual lock to be in the game, nobody feels the need. That was no longer an important game. I think when the 8-team playoff which will quickly be expanded to a 16-team (you watch) playoff, later in the season as teams are either locked in or out, attendance will drop. DRAMATICALLY. It will happen.

You think apathy is bad late in the season with the SEC championship game now? Think about when UT is 8-3 and not in the playoff picture. Ain't nobody going to the KY or Vandy game. Nobody.

I do feel like we have an older fan base, which contributes to this phenomenon. The SEC Championship against LSU in '02(ish) we had 2/3 of the place full, but their 1/3 was three times louder than us. Yes, I know they had more to cheer about, but it was that way from the offset.

I think the mere fact that those two teams are always in the hunt for the SEC title might have something to do with that. With very few exceptions, the majority of fanbases directly reflect the team. If the team is mediocre (much like we've been for the past decade) then the fans are going to seem mediocre.

Just maybe if people weren't so drunk & rude, they'd SEE that plenty of us old fogey's yell & scream!!!!!!
Hell, you don't have to stand the entire game, the day will come when YOU complainers will be the ones asking the drunks to sit down... We're in T section and stand.. everyone works together....... don't drink as much and pay attention the ones around ya.. Us old fogey's aren't bad... where do you think Tennessee gets most of their money???????????? And we're at every home game and sing, cheer and totally participate- we put our money bags and walkers with an usher........... geez:neener2:

My Dad is 58 and carries in a megaphone (non amped) to every game to raise the roof. He caught some flack from seats around him at first but now they just join in. With that as my background I do think we need some more vocal fans, but I've walked away from more games hoarse than I can count!

I was at 6 games last year. I was impressed sometimes and shocked at the lack of volume from the fans at other times. UCLA was very quiet. Auburn had a great atmosphere at times. Georgia had a decent atmosphere and South Carolina was roudy for the most part. Although I did see more and more kids as the year went on and tickets got cheaper as the losses piled up.

I think the best explanation is simply this: as the team goes, the fans go. The fans were exctited about the effort last years team gave. I know I was. I was excited to see the team rally after the 3rd quarter jumping up and down and coming together on the sidelines as a team. I think if they play with that kind of heart next year, it will be hard not to get behind them.

Prime example of this......... Auburn game in 2008. Sitting on the goal line in the upper deck. I swear I was the only fan on my feet and cheering hoping against all hope for a three and out late in the game when somehow UT still had a chance. Oh well... I'll still root hard for the Big Orange.
Others feel apathy, get over it and cheer

Apathy is easy when you consistently lose the third game of the year. Winning cures all ills. When UT tops UF you'll see the fan base crank up the noise.

I don't think this is a very good excuse... there are many stadiums/programs that have never obtained the success or tradition as UT and still show up as fans...

Too many rich old people telling me to sit down and shut up, so I yell at my TV for free instead of paying top dollar to get in drunk argumens with old fogeys.

:salute:

The Va Tech game this year was horrible... I don't consider myself a fanatic (although I am always hoarse the day after a game), but the fans that went to Atl. in my section were the worst fans (in regards to yelling and being energetic) I have ever been around...

I was on row 2 at Florida field in 2001... trust me, they aren't nearly as intimidating when they are losing. The same goes for LSU, up until 2002 Death Valley was a joke.

Get ready for out of control, da Vols will put an absolute beat down on the Gators this season. Take it to the bank, I will as I'm putting a sack of money on da Vols in Vegas. Once this game starts, it won't even be close, the gators may not even score and I don't see them stopping most anybody in the SEC East this year. To much inexperience on their D along with a missing cog, their former DC coaching UL now. Their D carried them last year, it won't this year and their new offensive starters won't believe the setting they'll enter at Neyland.

sigh

If I pay good money I'll do whatever I want with my ticket. I love how everyone claims to be the lone fan cheering in their section...Those are the idiots that get tossed out usually.

My favorite game for a cool crowd was 92 in the rain against FL. I was soaked, thought fans might leave, but they didn't and as the rain poured on we got louder! I just wish we could bottle that. I was in the nose bleeds under the O, before the jumbotron. Awesome crowd around me that day and I was 15 so that one sticks with me.

Well i've been attending UT games since 92, Florida in the rain, i'll never forget it. I'll tell you what is wrong. First of all you need a Wells Fargo truck to back up to the UT athletic department to pay for your tickets and your annual donation to the school, just for the privilege of coming to Tennessee games. So that pretty much explains why there is a high number of Blue hairs in the crowd. They don't make as much noise because they physically can't, Also they've come to expect the worse out of what they're seeing on the field. Some will argue that's all Phil's fault, but i think certain a AD should share in some of that blame. Also after 10 years of close but no cigar seasons, sandwiched between some forgettable ones, you can see why most fans show up hoping for the best instead of expecting to win anymore. Like it or not there is a certain amount of fan apathy that is still in place and will be there until it gets turned around. It's tough for fans to set around and watch your rivals and teams from around the league win SEC titles and National titles while your team wallers in mediocrity. It all boils down to piss poor management of what is supposed to be the university's cash cow. Now who is too blame for it? The people running the show that's who.

Instead of Fulmers banter about "if you told me we could beat Northern Illinois 13-9 and never play the game I would have taken it" type of attitude.

The first Tennessee game in Neyland I ever went to. Me and my buddies didn't sit down until the game was over.

Best thing was I got tickets about 20 minutes before the game started for only $20. Awesome.

I don't know how fans can't be excited now. We just waltz right in to LA Tech and took their coach. They had no idea we were coming.

And now that we have tape of the LA Tech versus Idaho game from last season, I wouldn't get too cocky if I was an Idaho Vandals fan.

Coach Akey, what 'cha goin' do when we come for you?

Go Vols! We own the WAC (except we can't touch Boise or Fresno).
