What is the Pitt game telling us...

Extremely concerned about our defense. Gave up over 5 yards a play. Scoreboard doesn’t reflect how bad their pass defense looked on BSU’s last drive of the first half. Bailed out by a fluke play.

Oline seemed looked good in pass protection, but run blocking was, meh.

Overall, they looked MUCH better in this opener than they did in the opener last year. This weeks opponent should intensify the focus.

Pitt atmosphere last night was best I’ve ever seen them have.

We actually gave up 4.9 yards per play (Georgia gave about that up to us last year) it's actually a solid number for a defense. That was better than Pitt, West Virginia, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Purdue who played today. We also gave up far fewer points than any of those team.

Pitt's uniforms look awful. When did their colors change? They look like a D2/high school level
team with these unis.

Do what? Those uniforms are some of the best in NCAA. It's classic. What sucked is when they tried to "go modern" around 1997 and they changed to the most boring, generic looking uniforms ever.

The performance from Pitt against WV gives me even more confidence than I had before. If WV can nearly beat PITT, then we most certainly can win if we play a solid game on the road.

I think it will be a great game and we will win in a shootout.

Pitt's stadium usually isn't a very loud atmosphere but it was pretty rocking last night and my bet is it's rocking again next week. I do think we hit them at a great time, winning after a big rivalry game.

A) West Virginia is not a good team.
B) This is a rivalry game and Pitt held nothing back. So you saw Pitt at its best. They consequently gave Tennessee more/better film to scout, whereas Tennessee was vanilla against BSU.
C) Pitt got some breaks and was lucky to win. Glad they did, but I’m not sure they outplayed WVU. And Tennessee is a lot better than WVU.
D) UT did nothing exotic on either side of the ball last night. I suspect you’ll see more press coverage and more pressure next week.

I like UT’s chances.

It depends on how good WVU ends up, also hard to judge on opening games, especially when their opener is against a big rival and it's the first time they've played them in a long time. I wasn't really surprised it was a close game given all those factors.

As I said though, I think the timing of us playing them is very good as they are prime for a letdown.

Yeah, you are right. This was a big rivalry game and that definitely tends to amp things up from both teams. I am not sure how good WV will end up being but pretty much every preseason prediction I read had their o/u win total around 5.5. Essentially a 6-6 team that finished 6-7 last year.

Also we better dang sure where white over orange pants because if so it will by far be visually the best game next week.

Last year the all orange vs. Pitt's classic road uniforms was maybe the best looking game all year IMO.

WVU will probably be middle to lower of the B12. Pitt I think is still a pretty decent team but I don't think they'll be as good as last year.

I thought the talk of their d-line being the "best in D1" was a bit....much.

WV outgained PITT 404 to 384. Rushing total against their D line was 190 yards. PITT got lucky with that INT late to secure the win but hey that is the game of football. Kudos to them for taking it to the house. I like our chances next week.

Agree. Pitt D-line was meh.

My .05 worth.
1. I didn't think the UT defense was firing on all 8 cylinders tonight. (Yes I know they won by 49 points. I watched the game.) I am concerned more about the conference teams UT is going to play than PITT.
2. Pitt is not as good as their ranking suggests. WVU should have never been in that game in the 4th quarter in my opinion.
3. Conclusion. This will be a hell of an offensive battle until UT's horses out gas them later in the game. UT by 3 TD's

Personal opinion this game is going to be a dog fight !!! Pitt looks better then I expected and we looked worst then I expected on defense . The main issue I see with this team that separates a 10 win season from 8 is finding a pass rush . I believe right now that’s easily our biggest issue .

I’m sure they’ll wear the white over orange. Those are Johnny Majors road uniforms and they’ll want to honor him in this game again.

This is disagree with . WVU has a really good defense , and JT Daniels . I fully expect them to end the season ranked . The question I have for them is can there o line keep daniels healthy and is their halfway as good as Pitt made him look .

Pitt is going to be tough to beat on the road. Assume they will be favored and I can’t really argue against it. That’s a very physical and well coached team.

UT has been at -3.5 for the last two months. Not sure if it will change much after tonight.

Also I've always liked Pitt as sort of a second team. Maybe it's the Johnny Majors connection and I've always like their uniforms. I usually kind of root for them to do well even in seasons we don't play them. I like that they have a respected connection with Tennessee.

You could be right. I thought Daniels looked pretty decent, and the int wasn't his fault.

We looked good on offense with probably a very conservative game plan. I see know problems there. Time will tell how well the D has improved this year. Hard to judge on that first game. I feel good about beating Pitt but will be a similar game to last year in my opinion. Turnovers can make a difference.
