What is the Pitt game telling us...

You have to love this fan base. We demolish a cupcake, cover the spread, have the starters out after the first series after halftime, have over 600 yards of total offense and 59 points. Amazingly, some of the posts on here would make you think we lost the game. The only concern I share is the subpar play by one of the members of the secondary. That has got to be cleaned up.

We could have hung a 100 on Ball State no problem. We played a lot of young players to get them reps. Pitt is better than Ball State but they are in no way better than us. We will get some payback for last year.

I don’t really understand all the worry. We just won by 49 points to a team that should have lost by about 49 points lol. We didn’t play hardly any press coverage from what I seen. We played 3-5 yards off the ball all game long. That doesn’t mean there isn’t concern in our secondary, particularly Burrell, but we play press coverage and jam their receivers, doubt they move the ball as much.

Hopefully they give Burrell help over the top. Ball State was picking on him. Maybe he's matched up with their best receiver....but the amount of passes thrown his way was concerning. 3rd Down defense was concerning too.....

5/14 on third down isn’t great but it isn’t terrible. I think we were being very vanilla on defense.

At this writing, the game is at 3:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter. How do we sum up this game for our battle with them?
Tells us Pitt is good. Our D looked bad. Think they hang 40 plus on us. Another 7-5 season & Liberty bowl. We’re just not there yet.

Throw the stats from a game with ball state out the window
Kinda my point…. Our biggest concern in this game was to stay healthy but beat them soundly. We didn’t need our defensive line to pressure the qb a ton. If people don’t think those big boys up from aren’t gonna be hyped up and ready for blood next week against Pitt, then something wrong. I think coming out of that game we have concerns but I think after next week we are gonna be pleasantly surprised.

That Pitt was LUCKY to win. Wva was on their way to a winning score ; receiver flat DROPPED the ball into the Pitt Db's hands. I doubt our WR's will gift them like that. We know Tennessee could have scored 75 last night; so not to worry about Pitt outscoring the Vols.

WV had their chances to beat Pitt just like The Vols did last season against Pitt. Pitt does NOT look as good as they did last year and that D-line everyone talks about has holes in it. Plus we have some really good game video on them now.

Hard to tell anything from a first game, although I think you can take away more from Pitts game since they played a decent opponent. Anyone who thinks it's a foregone conclusion that we win next week is crazy. If we can't find a way to get pressure on defense and get some sacks, it's gonna put a lot of pressure on the offense. Our defensive backfield is still terrible.

Um we handled all the cupcakes last year. And honest question, what more should the team have done? Held them to under 100 total yards? Kept them scoreless? It wasn’t a perfect game but you honestly couldn’t have asked for a better result. Ok more sacks I give you that. Other than that, I can’t see anything else that was worth worrying about.
You’re right, they’re playing National Champion level right now. With their stellar showing against Hawaii, Vandy will be the only competition in the East. I don’t know why these idiots are tryin to throw shade on the perfect game. We’re back baby!! Heck I don’t see any need wearing em out practicing any more this year. Just show up on game day fresh and rested. Can’t fix what ain’t broke.

On a serious note, lost to the worst UF team in modern history last year. I don’t think this team would have lost that game. Handled all the cupcakes and still went 7-6 last year so maybe the being content with beating cupcakes goal needs to be raised a little. To do that things have to be improved. Anyway, my comment was on folks getting tore up about any difference of opinion and CJH saying some of the same things that were said here. There is stuff that has to be cleaned up before we get to the meat of the schedule and that’s why these games are scheduled. What’s the big deal with those things being discussed? I feel great about the win and I agree with some of the criticisms too. You really wanna get your panties in a wad? My concern is with Hooker, not the defense. The problem with his footwork was pointed out before the game and he repeated the mistake multiple times during the game. I ain’t losing sleep over it, but you wanted to know what could be done better. Really wanna see the place get riled? Milton was the most improved quarterback on the field last night. I still wouldn’t trust him with the start but he looked 100x better than last year.

We dropping 50 on Pitt. Idc who we played, I saw what I needed to see from us in game 1. We came out focused and ready to handle business regardless of the opponent. I expect us to be extremely motivated just because we feel like this was a game we should have won last year. I think it might be a landslide from the jump & I don't think Pitt can keep up.

Extremely concerned about our defense. Gave up over 5 yards a play. Scoreboard doesn’t reflect how bad their pass defense looked on BSU’s last drive of the first half. Bailed out by a fluke play.

Oline seemed looked good in pass protection, but run blocking was, meh.

Overall, they looked MUCH better in this opener than they did in the opener last year. This weeks opponent should intensify the focus.

Pitt atmosphere last night was best I’ve ever seen them have.

Very possible that this isn’t a game by half next week. WVU gifted this game to Pitt, through a combination of coaching mistakes and a receiver not being able to catch a 15 yard pass. Pitt’s d-line is very active against the pass but man they are going to have a hard time with our receivers on the back end. They nearly gave up 200 yards rushing to a mediocre offensive line and a freshman running back. Bottom line is, they are slightly better than last year, at best, but doubtful. Tennessee would have won by 2 scores last year had Milton not overthrow touchdown passes by 15 yards. Tennessee is definitely a better team this year on both sides of the ball.

I agree the game was gifted to Pitt BUT that seems to be their personality they keep it close and play disciplined and they won about 5 close games last year that could of been L’s. Is that luck or just keeping yourself in it to win it. I feel we need to get going and pour it to them early. If they keep it close they’ll find a way to Win just their personality they did that a bunch last year and 1 was us at our place.

High scoring slugfest next week with in-house refs. I’m nervously optimistic… it’s hard to judge our OL, and our defense still looks like it needs work, especially in the back end. Pitt will score, but can we score more? I think so.

SEC refs next week I believe. ACC refs in our house last year.

I had to stop my, and remember that I only saw the last half of the 4th quarter of the Pitt games (minus some highlights) I’m pretty sure the majority of people posting are in the same boat. But the overall feel I get is that WV choked away the win. That pick 6 will haunt that WV receiver for the rest of his life.

I’ve been so starved for football I’ll probably go back and watch their full game.

They’re crowd looked insane in the 4th quarter though! Before someone starts the whole “sec crowds are way better, bigger, badder” I’m just saying it won’t be a cake walk for our first away game.

I agree, thought the environment looked awesome, but I do think it'll be a bit different atmosphere for our game though: i) not a night game, ii) that's an intense, historical rivalry renewed, iii) first game of the year/back on campus and iv) our fans will travel well.
