We are still a year or two away from reaching Butch Jones "maximum potential" in regards to potential foreseeable talent. I truly do think with more elite classes filled with elite players, and a veteran offensive line and quality depth, that we will eventually be a perennial top 15 team and "contend" for an SEC or National championship.

But it worries me that Butch has allowed us to lose these close games so very often. There will be a day when we are looking at an 10-2 or 11-1 season, and we will be matched up against the Urban Meyer's and Nick Saban's of the world with just as much talent as us. I just don't feel confident that we can defeat a top caliber program in a crucial championship game when/if the time comes with Butch Jones.

The most frustrating and depressing realization is.....

If we just made a few more plays in the OU/UF games,
we would be a top 15 team instead of 42 and on the bottom of the list with "other receiving votes". He has two legitimate chances to capitalize on big opportunities this season with games against UGA and Alabama. It's still early in the season, and there is still chance for redemption with those two still on our schedule. We better damn pull off an upset in one of those games, otherwise there was nothing truly accomplished this season other than "hopefully" beating up a poor SEC east and an injured riddled Arkansas.

Butch might end up being .223 against SEC teams and about .500 overall! But never ever can I see him winning 5 or more SEC games in his Best season

Strange we're talking about potential with our head football coach. This used to be a elite program.. Now we hire guys with potential. Mostly because the AD and the powers that be are cheap as hell.

8-4 with this scheme. I think that is probably gonna be pushing it in some years. The offensive scheme will prove to be ineffective long term.

that is my .o2

I want to be proven wrong, however.

As in his ceiling in this league as it stands? 8, 9 wins tops. He can recruit with the top, cant coach with the top.

I think he may catch lightning in a bottle and go 10-2/9-3 every now and then. But I don't think he is capable of getting us to the level of competing for championships year in and year out.

Sorry, but there are many in coaching who could deliver a 7-8 game winning season with that level of talent.

A "few more plays"? Try 2 more plays:

1 - OU - Go for the TD instead of the FG
2 - UF - On 4th/14 - don't "spy" the QB with a DE - blitz/stunt DL to get in his face and "jam" the d@mn receivers upon leaving the line-of-scrimmage.

I'm not sure what his potential may be at UT. It's obvious that he will have to adapt, improvise and overcome if he wants to be successful at UT.

I think the bigger question may be is he willing to see his faults as a HC and change for the better. If so then he may be very successful at UT in the future and win a SEC title.

If he doesn't adapt, improvise, and overcome his fait may be the same as Dooley.

Well given all the wisdom on this board, we should find our maximum potential guy and demand Hart present him to the Board of Trustees and ask them to drain the current $13M surplus that was only recently built back up to get him here so that we are not risking the future of our fall weekend entertainment on a mere 9-10 win guy who recruits well but does not take penalties or go for two and let's other major programs come back late. If Jones thinks we will tolerate this, then he should go to the NFL where this is common. Just because programs like Alabama have built massive surpluses in their program budget, we need to pony up, double down and go all in with that money because otherwise Hart will when Butch ultimately fails as predicted by the VN brain trust look for another diamond in the rough mid major coach and we won't get our Gruden, Kelly, Patterson or Manning. Hell we should really go big or go home and hire Bill Belichick. I suspect that he is cutting off the sleeves of a UT hoodie as we speak.

P.S. Blue Font. Seriously I love UT football. It hurts my soul to lose to Florida especially in a close game. God bless our team, coaches and fans. I know we will learn from this and will get better. I have been watching UT football for 45 years and we have been through much worse than having an improving team compete only to lose late to a bitter rival. We have had some of those games go our way (miracle in South Bend and the 21 point comeback against LSU in Death Valley with Rick Clausen come to mind)

I agreed, that about sums it up in a nutshell may I might add a FG made here and there wouldn't have hurt either.

Butch's potential will be determined by the new staff he hires.
Keep this one, he's toast.

I was hoping to see a Pinocchio meme saying " I look at Butch Jones and all I see is potential" in this thread.

Why is his potential even worth talking about? We have all seen what he is and will forever be in big games last night. He will get a lead sit on it and play not to lose. He's terrible at manging his staff, the clock, and situations. But great at excuses. He will never win a big game for Tennessee and will keep it in the middle of the road. The fan base is tired of his process and his phrases. The fact that some are saying he needs two more years is ridiculous. He's loaded with talent and should be thumping people but he hired a man from a dusty cubical who can't respond when punched in the mouth. We have the best talent we've had in years and haven't won an important game yet. Opponents will only get better we are just par for the course. Butch has to go.

I briefly looked up the stats for the 2012 Bearcats. That team averaged 250+ passing yards per game. Won (Co Champs maybe?) their conference. Overall record of 9-3 which includes a loss to UT. Then beat Cut's Duke squad in the bowl game.
We could say that performance in that conference is not indicative of success in a power conference. History shows many coaches can't replicate their results in the more competitive environment.
But, we could say his resuls are an indicator of CBJ's potential at UT.

Real historical statistics from past performance? Don't use facts to stop a mock coach firing and online flogging. Do you not realize that we lost a close game on the road to a bitter rival who has dominated us for a decade when we were a much worse team than this coach has presently made us!? How are we supposed to cope? Fan Duel and Draft Kings? Replaying the game on Xbox? He must go! So that we can find a coach of maximum potential!
(Blue font for those of you in Rio Linda)

The irony (and further proof we, as fans, know nothing) is when CBJ was hired the consensus was no concern about his coaching but wary of his ability to recruit. Obviously, the script has been flipped.

Rio Linda made me lol. Rush-ism.

The recruiting is getting ready to take a hit. These recruits as starting to realize they will be playing for a used car salesman if they come here.
