SEC Championship every 4-5 years. Ranked in Top 10 at the end of Bowl season at least 50% of the time.

This guy is exactly right. Every Vol fan should feel this way. Apparently there are those fans out there that think 8-4 and ranked in the bottom of the top 25 is acceptable. I believe our AD is one of them.

I don't think that beating Bama, Georgia, and Florida and winning the East every year is realistic. This is the SEC we are talking about. Maybe beating all three no less than once every 2-3 years.

Never any more than 2 total losses is what I expect 95% of the time.

Win east every 1 of 3 years, win SEC every 1 of 4 years. Win national title every 1 of 7-8 years.

Well........................... which is it?

Thoughts?

I think we should expect the following:

East Title: 1 every 3 years
SEC Title: 1 every 5 years
BCS Bowl: 1 every 4 years
Top 10 Finish: 1 every 3 years
Top 25 Finish: 4 out of 5 years (hands down)

We should win at least half our bowl games. We should never have more than two straight losses to our bigger rivals (Fla, Ga, Ala, etc.)

Anything less than what's above means we are a lesser program, which WE ARE currently under Phil. At one long time ago he met these expectations and blew them away now he isn't even close in most of the categories. We haven't held up to the standards above in some time. Time for change, Phil has done some great things for the Vol family its just that his time is up and let someone else have a chance. Phil isn't a bad coach, he has just stayed in it little too long.

No SEC title in last nine years, no BCS bowl in 9 long years, no top 10 finish for third straight year. Who can argue those three facts. Program is falling...

In the last five years you'd have to say that Fla, Ga, LSU & Auburn all have had much more success. For the last half decade we're not even in the top 25% of our conference.

Have we had the tools to win 10 or 11 games the past 4 years?

2005 we had the defense to go all the way, I dont know the whole story on G.Riggs, was he seriously injured in that Bama game? Because if not he flat out quit on the vols. We had to play the worst of the three Clausens at QB. The whole receiving corp was injured or inconsistent.

2006- Defensive talent is now about middle of the pack in the SEC. Offense is better, but cant score enough points to help out the defense against the powerhouses in the SEC ala Florida, LSU.

2007- The secondary is absolutely depleted, Ryan Karl (I like the guy he is a football player more suited for special teams) is a starting linebacker...thats not good.
D-Line lacks that game changing player that has been a staple at Tennessee.
The offense will be forced to win games with a QB that has a handful of broken fingers against Cal & Florida. Cal was a good football team until they quit after losing to the Beavers.
Somewhere along the line the whole team started playing good enough to make it into the SEC title game.

2008- Should have the best O-line in the East. Got a stable of quality tailbacks, no gamebreaker wide out. A young QB that I have no idea what to expect from.
Defense will be better or just as good at LB & DB but the front 4 is unproven, and that is what worries me. We cant beat Florida without dominating the line of scrimmage with 4 lineman,

Georgia will have just about everybody back. But we have the talent to match-up with the Dawgs.

Alabama & Auburn will be better

LSU' s offense will be better next year

With all this crap said I dont care what the record is, as long as when the games are over the opposing team comes away with one message: win or lose when you play Tennessee your gonna know you been in a dogfight... a losing dogfight and Mike Vick was your owner

Not sure this is all that valid coming off a year where he won the Heisman and yet Florida finished 3rd in the East.

A Heisman as a sophmore. Another year under Meyer. Another year for Harvin to improve.

And their defense isn't replacing 9 starters.

That 3rd best team in the East clownstomped us. 3rd in the East and they had the same record. We lucked out by having Miss St/Ark while they had Auburn/LSU.

I can completely see why he'd think Tennessee will be watching SEC Championships from home.

All that being said... I dont care if Bob Davies is coaching the Vols, after getting beat by 39 points, we'll be ready to play Sept 08'. If we dont get up for that game, Florida will be the least of our problems.

In this order:

1) Beat Bammer & Fla... historically speaking... beat them & we have great years
2) Win the East
3) SEC every 5 years or so
4) At least compete for a NC those years we win the SEC
5) Continue to make Lou Holtz and Lee Corso look bad by beating big non-con opponents.

win 9+ games every year, win the SEC once every 5 years, win a NC once ever 20-25 years

I think we can have better NC standards than that. You should really never EXPECT to win an NC in any given year, but you can expect to be nationally competitive at least half the time. You won't win it every other year, but probably once every 10-15 years.

pretty soon its going to be so hard to win a NC. There is just too much parody.

It is already hard to win an NC. The Parity thing helps the SEC, where there are going to be few unbeaten teams. I think Florida will have one in the next couple of years though.

because of the scholarship limits, other teams are catching up to the powerhouses though. Teams like USF and Rutgers will have as good a chance to win as Nebraska, Tennessee etc
