What if we start out 2-5

Very plausible we start we out 2-5 after the Bama game next year. If we are struggling on offense in particular who all is going to be clamoring for Mike Leach and blaming Fulmer for being to prideful to hire him?

If we start 2-5, they should fire the staff at that point and clean house in administration. We are Tennessee. We should be winning every game. Yes we have one legit National Title in 122 years, but we should win it every year.

OR

We can STFU and let the man recruit and fix the mess that Hamilton started in 2005 (see how and why in other posts). It takes time. Dabo was about to get fired in year 3. They turned it around well. Tennessee is probably looking at 5-7 or 6-6 next year. Get your mind around it and relax. Pull out your corn hole game and have fun. The great hall of famer will fix it yet again.

1st year, not a huge deal. But it would matter too in how we lose games.

There honestly is no excuse to lose to Florida next year. The teams were mirror images of each other this past year. The game is in Knoxville. If we lose it'll be because Mullen has done a better job that Pruitt to that point in the season.

As an aside, the Leach bashing is ridiculous. He'd be by far the most accomplished football coach we'd ever hired besides Johnny Majors. But that ship is sailed. Fulmer is all in with Pruitt. Have to hope he is better at hiring head coaches than he was at picking assistants.

5-7 or 6-6 does NOT meet expectations. If he starts out 5-7, he is no better than the coach we just fired.

Jones was 5-7 his first year with a lot less talent and many more problems.

We started 2-5 in 1986, won 5 straight to finish 7-5. 1987 we went 10-2-1.

Edit: One game from winning the SEC.

Leach went 3-9, 6-7, and 3-9 his first three years at Wazzou. His first two seasons at Texas Tech were comparable to the four years before he got there. His history suggests he doesn't turn programs around quickly.

Pretty good bet he wouldn't turn UT's boat very fast either.

Not to rehash an old thread (I know I am), but Wazzou isn't THE UT. IMO I'd rather have a guy who doesn't turn programs around quickly, but does turn them around, vs a guy with no history as a HC. Jmo.

So you are saying i shouldnt start a what if we are 3-4 thread?

Or 3-3 thread?

I think Freak being democratic and all would let you start almost any thread. Even if it borders on the ridiculous. And that being the case, I think I'll join you. If this post seems a bit personal, just remember it's all in your imagination.

I’m going in expecting a 3-9 season.

This way when/if we win more I’ll be happy and not expecting too much from Pruitt’s first season...

Year 2 though, I’m expecting 10 wins regular season minimum.

So basically your expectations are too low first year and too high second year?

This is a rebuild. So, 2-5 and being hammered every game or 2-5 and just losing to better teams despite being in those games? There's a difference.

The moral victories may make you feel different about getting beaten but not me. I have seen enough of those under Jones to last a lifetime . 2-5 would be a terrible way start the season even if it was by one point in all 5.

Gotta give this staff time.

What record next year qualifies as okay? Would you be okay with 3-9?

I think anything less than 5-7 the natives will be restless. The last two coaches pulled that off in their first year and Jones had a surprising win over #11 South Carolina in the first year.

If Pruitt does not have one of those or ends up less than 5-7 - folks will question and rightfully so.

Jones was rebuilding the first year and was 4-3 through the first 7 games. Yes I know the games were different but why should we not expect three wins over the non-conference foes and one surprise win like Jones had ... assuming Pruitt is indeed a better coach?

Why are we not putting the same expectations out there? I thought Pruitt was a step up?

If we are 3-9 in 2018, we will not win 10 the next season.

That would be a pretty big turn around but the schedule and who all they lose could be a factor.

If we lose 9 games, that implies we lost to every SEC school for a second year in a row. To win 10 we would have to go from 0-8, 0-8 to 6-2.

Yes we get Miss. State and not Auburn in 2019 .. but there is still Alabama, Georgia, and Florida (who should be much better as well).

And if we lose 9 next year - getting great players to come to Tennessee is going to be even more difficult.

5-7 should be the low ceiling in 2018 - anything less and we hired the wrong man IMO.
